I have analyzed the following things :

IIM - A : Last year they had some very absurd 21 points minimum system. Very horrible and unfair. They have corrected it and I think it is now fair. I mean you need to give some credit for people who have studied hard for their grades.

IIM - C : The best one. You crack CAT you are in. Doesnt matter who you are. It has the ability of taking stones and turning into diamonds.

IIM - B : The most horrible. Last year I knew a person who got 99.98 in CAT and didnt get B call. He got A call so his academics were really great. Big thumbs down to IIM B.

FMS: Again on IIM C lines. You crack the exam, you get in. Yes the paper quality is deteriorating. They are having repetitions. But that is not biased to someone. Full marks again to FMS.

XAT : On same lines with IIM C and FMS. Though they had done some stupid mistake this time, they had the courage to accept it and rectify it. Respect.

So guys I think we have got plenty of options here. LEts get going.

see actually no one can say anything at present...but yes, you do have a good chance of a call...but only they know how they "normalize"

the criteria were the same last year...and the most weird thing was, they multiplied the percentile with 0.5 instead of multiplying the scaled scores!!!

so, practically, the difference between a 95%iler and a 99%iler, according to them was just 2.5 marks in the composite score out of 100!!! :shocked:

there would have been a huge difference had they used the scaled scores...but with an "inspiring" and "innovative" person at the helm, u can't expect anything better this year...

Blame it or not, it will take the 'same type' of students and profiles again...

I think IIMA 's policy this time is still a good one! Atleast everyone has a chance..

Last year, as it was a 21 point system, it was a compulsion to score 21 or above just to be 'eligible' for IIMA. (which is a really high academic weight age and only those having excellent numbers on paper/mark sheet were in the race.) Still the cutoff was 99.4 %ile.
And IIMA had 540 calls for 400 seats, (ratio - 1.35:1, which is as big as 1:5 for FMS, and 1:8 for every other IIM. eg- IIM Indore had 3900 calls for 450 seats)

Simply going by the logic, IIMA calls very less no. of students...thus it most probably will get more than enough no. of students with 99.5%ile in CAT and 27+ in AR!!! So, the cutoff mark (in AR) shall be there itself where it simply starts...

Plus two sections will more than obviously increase OA cutoffs, as it is evident from what CAT 2011 Convener said when asked about the 2-section system : "There are a lot of students who loose out a seat due to low score in 1 section" (They dont want to lose students clearing OA cutoff and losing out in 1 section)

Anyways..my rating is 18!!(OBC)Dont know how to rate my rating

Ur method is totally flawed :
30% weightage and 70% weightage add up to 100 right ?
Now thats wat it means, our of 100 , AR would constitue 30 and CAT the rest 70

So a person with Ar 27/33 has roughly 24.5 /30 and someone with AR 18 /33 has 16.3/30 and so the difference is 8.18/30 .
Now to Cover that up from the remaining 70 u need to score (assuming cat total is 450 again) 450*8.18/70 =52.5 more marks than the other person .

So if scoring follows last years pattern and OA cut off is 99+ you need get around 99.98 to have a Overall score more than the 99% guy with AR of 27 .

I totally agree!! B ut again i don't think IIMA is gonna keep their OA %ile cutoff anything below 99.5.... That will again determine the application rating W.R.T the overall %ile....IIMA is very different to other dumb IIM's like IIMK..etc... Whr many ppl with as low as 84%ile have qualified for final admission just beco'z their acads were excellent...

Again, i have many friends from south India...where average score comes around 90+ %.... which is contrast to UP and Bihar board results where toppers come up with 80+ %...

In other words those student will never be able to study in IIMA... This system is flawed too and will demotivate students from modest acads...

Anyone with 33 gets 9.9 approx 10.
So max AR one can get is 10.
18 AR gets 5.4.
The difference is much lesser when followed this way.

A : AR:27, CAT: 99.00, last yrs Scaled Score : 265
B : AR:18, CAT: 99.98, last yrs Scaled Score : 324

Weightage: 70% CAT, 30 % AR

A:
CAT Score : 265/450, Converted to percentage : 58.88
AR SCore: 27/33, Converted to percentage :81.81

Composite Score: .7(61.11)+.3(81.81)
=24.54+41.22 = 65.76


B:
CAT Score : 324/450, Converted to percentage : 72
AR Score: 18/33, Converted to percentage :54.54

Composite Score: .7(72)+.3(54.54)
=16.36+50.4 = 66.76

EDIT: B has a higher composite score than A after getting a very high CAT score.

A generally takes a pool of 1000-1100 in the first list and then takes around half of them, so it all depends on how many ppl have an AR of around/above 27 in the first list. But yeah chances do look bleak

Yeah .. so I and K are gone thanks to the ridiculously high weightage to acads..
for A being at 20 AR need to absolutely nail the test for any chance against 27 + Ar guys.. Also hope that sectionals cut offs are higher than last time.. thats the only chance for ( non- 27+) Ar group :/

You yourself use the word 'weightage'. Please understand the concept of weighted averages, as should be given in your CAT QA prep material. Instead of explaining how weights work (which you'll find in your material), I'll try to explain where your views falter.

Multiplying by .3 makes the result to be 30% of the score you have got out of 33. This means the maximum possible score would be 30% of 33, or 33*.3 = 9.9. Similarly, taking 70% of your max score (out of say 450) for CAT would give 450*.7 = 315. So the max possible score for CAT in the composite score is 315, while for acads + work-ex is only 9.9. This means CAT holds 315/9.9 = almost 32 times the weight of acads + work-ex. But 70% is not 32 times of 30%. I hope you have understood. :)

i am from gujarat and here we are given admission in grad courses based on our marks in Physics+Chemistry+Biology+Maths (Science Stream)...so obviously, throughout the year, students focus on these subjects and less on languages (any 2 of English/Hindi/Gujarati/Sanskrit)...but our 12th percentage is calculated based on the total of all 6 subjects!!!

so, i have 85.xx in the 4 main subjects but 77.xx overall...i will have to write 77.xx and contend with 2 points for HSC!!!
that's why the criteria don't make sense...obviously,one would never compromise one's merit score (score in PCBM) and focus on languages just to improve one's 12th percentage

Same case here also buddy....M also from Gujarat with 78% in 12th (PCMB is 83% but no use)

So .. if person A has AR = 27
B has 18

Lets say the no. of extra marks required by B to equal A = x

Diff in AR = 9
when scaled = (27*30/100) - (18*30/100) = 2.7

to overcome this deficit .. B's scaled down score ( out of 70 ) should be greater than A's scaled down score by 2.7

So, on a scale of 450 - its 2.7/70*450 = 17.35

So, for a moment if you disregard normalization , The Diff. in actual CAT score is approx 17.35*180/450 = 6.94 or approx 7 marks .. which i think is very reasonable , very fair..

If this is the actual criterion followed. i am very happy with it.. ( though not with the whole of it, just this part seems rational )

Buddy i guess those five subjects must contain PMC/PBC. Chemistry should not be excluded for calculation if you are a science student.

Yes, i agree with it. Otherwise its uselsess for someone with AR <= 18. I think the idea is to establish a major diff. b/w weightage of acads and weightage of masters/work-ex ( by multiplying and adding ) and then again to establish a significant diff. b/w weightage of CAT scores and AR.

This needs to happen otherwise AR <= 18 dont stand a chance

It is not exactly essay writing. Last year it consisted of precis writing(100 words i guess) and article writing(about 200 words as far as I remember).

engineering - 59.8% (till 3rd yr ending)

As per IIM A criteria (3*3*1) = 9 :(

Is it worth to give CAT???

There is still a little hope for all of us. IIMA will definitely come out with sectional cutoff's and overall cutoff's after CAT results and plus it will use this criteria to filter out people. So say overall cutoff is 99+ and sectional are 95+ , so out of maybe 2000 people satisfying this criteria, everyone would not be having the best AR i.e (27+). So definitely some guys with next best AR i.e (18+) should make it. (Atleast I am hoping so)

I concur with you man! Same is the case with DU! Let's just hope they come out with a post CAT criteria in which different streams would get different cutoffs like last year.

But what has improved from last year is that they haven't used past acads as a medium for elimination, instead they've given everyone a chance (Bleak though!)

Does this mean that if my Application Rating is below 21, still I have a chance of a call, unlike previous year?
By the way my Application Rating is 2*2*2+2 = 10 (LOL)
And believe me guys I worked really hard to get the scores in 10th, 12th and Graduation which are now contributing to a mere 10 points. If this point system continues then IIMA will surely loose many deserving students and end up selecting whole batch from the students of boards where getting marks is easy.
In my case, M.P. Board, where topper from M.P. scored around 82% something, and I scored 75, that time I was proud of myself but now those bright 75% of M.P. Board are contributing nothing but 2 marks and free humiliation. Kudos IIMA!!!
I'll never let my children (if any) study in M.P. because IIMA doesn't need Ranchordas but Silencers.

The admission criteria for IIMA or for that matter any other elite school doesn't give a rodent's rear to the fact that deserving candidates get left out.

Their goal is to ensure that every single person that they give out an admission offer is excellent in every imaginable way ( here : 10th,12th,grad scores ) --> filter filter filter filter. And there is no dearth of such people.

Feels unfair to be a deserving guy but getting left out .. I think 90% of puys on this thread will tell you that but fact is IIMA didn't start out with the objective of being fair.

My scores are 92% in 10th,
97% in 12th and 79.7 in college ..

and last year according to IIM K .. my 92% deserves a 8/20
97% deserves a 9.2/20 ... (with normalization)

and this time arnd my score comes upto 18 + 2/3(dunno till when they ll calculate it)(no normalization) ... i am more or less screwed .. coz almost every1 in South of India gets over 80% in college lvl studies ...

so whatever they decide to do i m am more or less finished ..

for 3 years i have been trying for nothing other than IIMA .. i guess it is safe to say i can finally give it up and do sumthin useful with ma life ..

My application rating is 3*2*2 = 12, just missed 18 by .4%. Don't know why IIMA has put such a devastating criteria. If they think they will get bright student by doing this, then they are partially correct.

I've 90% in 10, 86.6% in 12.
But I've 79.8% in B.E(CSE)-Jadavpur Univ.(Though CGPA is 8.61)
And with that weird (A*B*C) method it becomes 3*3*2=18....while a person with 0.2% more than my grad percentage will have 3*3*3=27(provided he has 80+ in 10,12 which is not that difficult).... another thing: those who are currently in final year of their engg. will have the facility to use their CGPA as percentage by multiplying CGPA with 10...... My CGPA is: 8.61,but as I've passed out I wont be able to use my CGPA any longer!!!! Rather I've to use the %age score which is given only after the end of final semester,so I didn't have any clue about that 'missing by a whisker' %age even 2 months ago(since I'm 2011 pass out)!!! What a timely announcement by IIM-A!!!!!!

Those were the wiser days when aptitude was the decider and not whether u prepared fr board exams or not? and these fools consider last 5 yrs as marks criteria.... ppl getting 90% in boards is a free lunch these days...

So True.during those times getting 80% in 10th was celebration time.
But now we have no other choice left,we can only fight for other colleges and secure our future.
