This was my first attempt at CAT and what i feel is that the percentile that you get is only to get the call.Rest is all in the GD/PI or WAT/PI. The second phase is more important.If you can nail the second round there is no one that can stop you from converting the call.However a high percentile does ensures a smooth flow but not a sure shot convert.

My profile was completely pedestrian and for people who face similar problems, I can only say be prepared. I found it very tough. So think about this before starting your preparation because the interview is as important if not more as your written part and there will be no time to think of all this after the results. What I've noticed with this whole interview season is that your profile is really secondary to them, what matters to them is how you are as a person. Project a sensible and confident self and I'm sure things will work out. Importantly, they generally quiz you on what you've provided in your forms. So, fill that form out, after giving it a good thought.
When I had given CAT this year, i had mainly aimed for IIM-C, but then i worked really hard,no matter what. And getting such a good score got me a call from IIM-A and IIM-B. And trust me, once you have the call, everyones on a level playing field. A stellar profile might get you through, even with a bad PI, but a good PI will get you through no matter what.

IIFT: First interview of the season...had back to back that day with IIM-K in the afternoon session...Had prepared well for the GDPIs but had no practice for WAT. GD topic - "India did not successfully leveraged the hosting of CWG 2010" - performance was not up to my abilities...but still performed decently...wouldn't call it one of the best GDs i've had ...PI was the best one...asked about the G20 nations, G8 nations...steps i would suggest to get India into G8 nations...questions based on moral values, my future plans and my final year project...My evaluation: GD-3, WAT-4, PI-4.5 Verdict: CONVERTED

IIM Kozhikode: WAT Topic - "don't remember exactly...but it was something about how deepest desire can be ruin someones life... Decent performance - explained what deepest desire is...how it can motivate someone and how it can ruin someone's life as well....gave a few examples from the cricketing field as well as of a few models who eventually became drug addicts...PI was a stress one...started with why i wanted to leave my job(i had been placed in a top automobile manufacturing company)...then why my percentage was low in colg...then questions from automobile engg...i wasn't able to answer some questions...I gave a proper reason fr the same...question abt my project and thenregarding the other calls and why MBA is important fr me My evaluation: PI--4/5, WAT--3.5/5 Verdict: CONVERTED

IIM Lucknow: WAT/GD Topic - "I would rather trust a woman's instinct than a man's brain". GD performance was no good...I didn't get enough opportunity in the beginning but eventually was able to put forward all of my points...still not the kind of performance which would have made me confident...Interview was good...i used the word jurisdiction in the interview...so a bit of discussion on Jurisdiction...then he started asking me about NSE...nifty...NASDAQ...DOW JONES...Taxation...tax slab...various savings...mutual funds etc...i mean it seemed as if i was a tax consultant...then i was asked the difference between invention and discovery...answered it correctly using an example... My evaluation: GD--3/5, PI--4/5 Verdict: Initially Wait-listed...converted in the second list

IIM Calcutta: WAT/GD Topic - Related to piracy of songs and how it affects the singer...the best ever GD i've ever had...started with a structure...gave relevant point....made sure we stuck to the structure decided in the beginning...gave everyone a chance to speak...on the whole i controlled the GD...gave a very good summary to the GD as well...PI started with Introduce urself...then was asked about my family background...about my core subjects...from Fluid Mechanics and Powerplant engineering(these two were my favorite subjects)...then about my future goals...and finally discussion about Indian Mythology...On the whole the best GDPI of the season...expected a sure shot convert My evaluation: GD--4.5/5 PI--4.5/5 Verdict: CONVERTED

IIM Bangalore: WAT Topic - Don't remember the exact topic...but it was something related to the strikes...as in strikes hamper growth of country like India...Decent performance...talked abt how strikes hamper growth...gave examples of Maruti and Hero Honda and how it affected the Indian Economy as a whole...Grilled in PI...since I wished the panelist...they looked at the watch and then asked me why someone wishes the other person...Then they talked abt my future plans...reasons...plans fr my own venture...detailed discussion on how i'll execute my plans...and then why i want to do an MBA without any workex...I wrote in my SoP thai i like reading Indian Mythology...So, they also aked abt Ramayana and Mahabharat... My evaluation: PI-2.5/5, WAT-3.5/5 Verdict: REJECT

FMS: GD Topic - Inclusion is necessary for economy as well as corporate" I gave the structure in the beginning...the only moment when only one person was speaking...after that it was a proper fish market...every one was shouting...in fact one candidate asked the other one to lower her tone(aawazz neeeche) PI...discussion about the GD....i tried to defend my point...and the panelist seemed convinced...then asked abt the field in which i wanted to specialize...why...reason why i wanted to Industrial marketing..and then three reason as to why i wish to go fr retail marketing and not industrial marketing...EXTEMPORE topic - "Delicious" My evaluation: PI-3/5, GD-1.5/5 Verdict: REJECT

IIFT: First interview of the season (or I should say life, since I never wrote CAT before) in Jan-end. Moderate prep. GD topic - "Indian youth is strong in mind, but weak in body" - a well rounded performance from me given I have strong academic background but am very weak ... Even the panelists laughed about this when they asked me how I performed in GD. PI was around academics, why I want to do Mgmt. Consulting and something on hobbies (Philately). My evaluation: 4.5/5 Verdict: CONVERTED :)

SPJain: Pathetic GI1 as I only spoke for a minute in my intro when ppl ahead of me took almost 5-6 minutes each. In subsequent questions, I tried to rectify this by bringing in CV (brownie) points. Got selected for GI2. Suggested GD topic on Corruption and performed the best. However, none from our GI2 group could convince the panelists why we want to do Finance given we are engineers and have non-Fin workex. My evaluation: 4/5 Verdict: REJECT. NOT EVEN CALLED FOR IMMERSION

IIM Lucknow: WAT/GD Topic - "I would rather trust a woman's instinct than a man's brain". Entered the GD second, spoke 4-5 times. Some questions on Radar and difference with Sonar. Then asked me on Erin Callan (Mentioned in PI), CFO of Lehman. Talked about movies from where I came to know about her. Talked about Oscars (which would be announced next day). Nothing on myself, workex, why MBA. My evaluation: 2/5 Verdict: CONVERTED :sneaky:

IIM Ahmedabad: WAT Topic - "People of the world have lost faith in their leaders and a new world order is about to come soon. Decent performance - Wrote about corruption, Jasmine Rev., Occupy Wall Street. PI started with work-ex (Intellectual Property), a lot of questions on LEDs, continuous but non-differentiable functions, business proposition evaluation based on an IP idea, something on adventure sports (I had two certis on Rafting and Skydiving). My evaluation: 4/5 Verdict: CONVERTED

IIM Bangalore: WAT Topic - "Caring for sick and mentally ill is a job best left to the family members and should not outsourced to professionals". Decent performance. Talked about movies like Diving Bell and Butterfly and Guzarish as I am a movie buff and wanted to talk about that in PI. Grilled in PI on work-ex, learning from working in startup, why mgmt. consulting, questions related to strategy/vision/tactics etc. Importance of Foreign Exchange which I royally screwed up. Something about Roorkee. My evaluation: 3/5 Verdict: CONVERTED :biggrin:

IIT-Bombay: GD Topic - "Case study on new employees coming to an Indian cloth mill and not adjusting with seniors and existing company culture." Couldn't speak much in GD as people always cut me or were too loud. Excellent PI. Talked about work-ex. How my workex helps my MBA. Lot of questions on gaming and how it relates to strategy and MBA. Questions on stamp collection. Questions about myself (HR kinds) My evaluation: 4/5 Verdict: CONVERTED
MDI: GD Topic - "Should India continue to invest in Nuclear energy?" (Something like that). Spoke a lot, 1 of the 4 who made the GD a fish-market. GD was stopped in between once. Was grilled coz of this in PI and they asked me why we made it fish market (Gave reason of sore throat and hence, loud voice :D). PI revolved around India's energy policy and if India should invest in renewable or nuclear. Nothing else. My evaluation: 1/5 Verdict: CONVERTED

NITIE: GD Topic - "Right to Education Bill". Didn't know anything about the topic, listened to 4-5 people. Then entered the GD 3-4 times. Spoke about inadequacy of Indian education system and how the bill is premature and before its time. Was grilled on acads in PI. Lot of questions on image processing. Questions on work-ex, goals and how I am qualified to land in strategy consult. Questions on Intel's strategy etc. No convincing answers. Very short PIMy evaluation: 1.5/5 Verdict: CONVERTED

IIM Indore: WAT Topic - Something on increasing child AIDS in India, and need for sex education. Performed well in PI. Interview started with about myself, workex and what are my responsibilities. Lot of questions on Control systems, none of which I answered satisfactorily. Questions on disaster mgmt system for Orissa, which I again screwed royally. At end I asked whether students get into live projects, I was straight away told "Only the bright and smart ones, not everybody", indicating not idiots like me. My evaluation: 1/5 Verdict: WL 105 :)

XLRI: PI started with lot of questions on 4G technology (Airtel had launched 4G the day before). Questions on poverty in India and how we can remove that. Introduced humor by saying reduce poverty line. Questions on poverty line. Food wastage and middlemen etc. Most of them answered satisfactorily. My evaluation: 4/5 Verdict: WL 76 (Biggest shock).

I had 2 calls from C and L. Being a fresher with super awesome CGPA I knew I won't be getting any A,B calls even with my 99.89.

SPJain: Great Group Interview I and below average Group Interview II.Went blank in GI-II for a moment while answering.
IIM A: Excellent WAT but screwed PI over maths (When you have 100 in maths in 12th you don't have the liberty to give wrong answers to mathematics questions).
IIM B : Excellent WAT but fumbled badly in PI over effects of mobile radiation.
IIM C : Excellent WAT/GD and great PI .Answered all maths questions and was lucky to have a prof in the panel who also read Orhan Pamuk. Was grilled on it.
IIM L: Excellent WAT/GD and great PI. Answered all questions . Was asked a bit of probability and the only management related question in all my interviews which was over diminishing marginal utility.
XLRI : Great PI but I guess my XAT score was way down the line.
MDI : Awesome GD and the shortest PI. No technical questions were asked. Only a bit about my take on homosexuality. Answered it very convincingly.

Veritably put one needs to be able to back his past performances in the PI. Motive is not to be over-smart but to convince the panel.
