soln:
1st method
a=-4, b=-1
(4)^3/2 + (1/4)^3/2
= 8 + 1/8
=65/8
2nd method
a+b=-5

While analyzing I realized Aimcat ke saare FIJs mere galat hue...;)
It got me thinking...aise hi Section1 bhagwan bharose hain...i don't want to take a chance with Section2 also...
Here is some 'copied' gyaan on FIJs...

FIJs appeared last in 1994 and then again in 2006...I know according to stats it should give jitters to those preparing for 2018 wala CAT, not us...still just to be on the safe side...

FACTS:

1.They can be verified or discovered

2.Applicable to all Universal truths.

3.Anything that is seen, heard or read is a fact.

4.Anyone elses opinion stated by the author is a fact. (The personal opinion will become a judgement)

5.Figures, Statistics or other data without an opinion attached to it is a fact. ( with an opinion attached becomes an inference).
INFERENCES:

1.A logical conclusion based on a set of facts. (Logical conclusion meaning, anyone seeing those set of facts should be able to arrive at that.)

2.Change the facts and the conclusion will no longer be valid.

3.Inferences are self-explanatory. It tells you why. (If you have a statement which looks like an inference and you form a why question on it, you should be able to get an answer. If you dont, it will become a Judgement.)

4.An inference is an opinion that doesnt change according to perspective.
5.If the set of sentences given to you are connected, you can only do UPLINKING to decide that a statement as an inference. Meaning You should have the facts preceeding this statement. If the facts are provided as the next statements it cannot be an inference. It will be a judgement. Example

1. X is a good student when it comes to attendance.
2. X attends college regularly.

In this example, statement A is a judgement, statement B is a fact.
If you change the order like below

1. X attends college regularly.
2. X is a good student when it comes to attendance.

In this case A is a fact and B is an inference.

One fact can lead to multiple inferences.
Inference will have verbal bridges with facts ( words like leads to, points to, indicates, shows, explains, expresses)
A cause and effect relation ship can be termed as an inference.
A statement backed up by an example in the same sentence will be an inference.

JUDGEMENTS:
1.Any statement that could lead to an approval or disapproval.
2.It is the authors personal opinion.

3.It is open to challenge.

4.It doesnt tell you why. ( see point 3 of inference for clarity)
5.It changes according to perspective.

An LR tip with reference to one question from Proc9......

Posting the question first for the benifit of those who don't take CL mocks......
Directions for questions 58 to 60: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below.

Eight friends wearing shirts of eight different colours - Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Pink, Black, White and Purple - are sitting at a circular table in clockwise order respectively. Their names are Ashish, Bhola, Coral, Deva, Emran, Fardeen, Gopi and Hemant, in no particular order. Each of them is either facing the center of the table or facing exactly the opposite direction away from the center. It is also known that:

(i) Ashish is sitting two places to the right of Emran and Emran is sitting two places to the right of Ashish. Coral and Gopi are not sitting at diametrically opposite positions.
(ii) Emran is sitting three places to the right of Gopi and two places to the right of Hemant.
(iii) Bhola is sitting immediately to the right of Fardeen and Hemant is sitting immediately to the left of Bhola.
(iv) The person sitting two places to the right of Bhola is facing away from the center of the table.
(v) Among the four pairs of friends sitting at diametrically opposite positions, there is just one pair in which the two friends are facing different directions

QUESTIONS:
If Coral is wearing the Yellow shirt and is facing East, then which direction is the person wearing the Red shirt facing?
A. North-West......B. South-East......C. North......D. South......

If Bhola is wearing the Green shirt and is facing South-West, then which direction is the person wearing the Black shirt facing?
A. North-East......B. South-East......C. North......D. West......
What is the angle (in degrees) between the direction which Bhola is facing and the direction which Deva is facing?
A. 45......B. 90......C. 135......D. 180......

For LR sets like this which may have more than one possible arrangement I'd suggest look through the questions and the options first......if none of the questions have "Cannot be determined" as an option and there isn't any option of the form "either (a) or (b)" then you can see which question provides maximum information and then find out one arrangement and use it for the others......

For example in this question you can use the second question to fix Bhola's position......now based on that you find out the corresponding arrangement......using this arrangement you can obviously solve the second question......you can also solve the third question as there is no such condition stated in the third question to contradict this arrangement......

And also for the first question you just have to rotate the colours and directions......you do not have to arrange the people again......

Now all sets cannot be done this way......so you need to see the question and judge if it can be done......there may be cases when two questions can be answered with one arrangement and for the third you may need to find another one......

The method provided by CL shows that two cases have been considered and all......and then they arrive to one arrangement......but all that is not necessary in this case......

P.S. As stated by CL for this question......and in fact it should be used for other similar questions too......if the names of the people, places, teams or other entities involved all start with a different letter then you can just use a single letter for each entity......saves time and effort......so use abbbreviations just in case you aren't already doing so......

Great stratergy thanks a lot for it. I would start it by today itself and see how it goes by the week end and then by the fortnight.
My accuracy is not very good and it takes me a lot of time to comprehend and after the pattern change i do have sometime to invest but lately a few AIMCAT's have...

Anish had explained all this on phone( using our inpee resources optimally) :D. And i could feel the difference after doing 10RCs.I mean, i am able to gauge my correct-incorrect power which i never did earlier.It atleast gave me some confidence to read any RC which i usually never do.
