In the last few years, we have seen formation of teams like Dream team and Underdogs Team and their success in bringing people together has been awesome. The only drawback of this was that it was limited to few users. With time, we need to learn from our past and try to make things better and bigger. Hence few of us at PG HQ, other mods and admins and few users who have been integral part of PaGaLGuY came up with the concept of PaGaLGuY Premier League.
So what it is all about ? Let us read below
Henceforth, we will have 8 teams for this MBA entrance prep season. The teams will be
1> Mumbai Dream Team - Click here to know more about Mumbai Team

8> India United Dream team - Click here to know more about India United team

The names of the teams is something which is open. Team members can suggest names after forming their teams. Keep them exciting, enthusiastic and positive.
Q.1. How the teams will be constituted ?
Ans . Every team will have 15 players, 1 coach and 1 manager. There is no limit to number of supporters though.
Every team needs to have minimum of 10 members from the same city. e.g. Bangalore Dream team must have 10 members from Bangalore. Other 5 members should be preferably from nearby locations.
Members appearing for TIME, IMS , CL and CF mocks are eligible to be part of the teams. Members from other coaching institutes can be incorporated if the total number is more than 15 out of 120 players in the league.
Q.2. Every team will have a different thread for themselves ?
Ans . Yes. We will be opening a sub-section for premier league where all team threads will be moved.
Q.3. Ok, so what is the first step ?
Ans. After this announcement, members from different cities can club together and should post the nomination list of at least 8 people to start with. A captain will be chosen by the same set of people.Captain alongside coach will manage more additions.
Q.4. Ok, teams are formed, what next ?
Ans . Every week, once the mock results are declared, a captain can chose scores of 11 of his team. ( other 4 can be considered substitutes ) and post. The teams will be go up and down on the leaderboard as per this formula -
Team Score = *0.75 + -
Where,
R1 - percentile of the 1st ranked performer in the team
R2 - percentile of the 1st ranked performer in the team
R11 - percentile of 11th ranked performer in the team
R1M2 - percentile of 1st ranked performer in the 2nd mock
R1M1 - percentile of 1st ranked performer in the 1st mock
or, we can say,
Team Score = Average of percentiles of top 11 performers in the team * 0.75 + Sum of difference of percentiles of top performers in the team - Difference in percentiles of 1st rank and 11th rank member in the team
0.75 is multiplied with the average to give weightage to this score. We wanted to give ,
60% weightage to Average of percentiles of top 11 performers in the team
20% weightage to Sum of difference of percentiles of top performers in the team
20% weightage to Difference in percentiles of 1st rank and 11th rank member in the team
The above formula is devised to incorporate the following
1> Overall performance of the team.
2> Change in performance over previous mock.
3> The diversity in the team.
The captain will be responsible for compiling the scores and publishing them as a team by every thursday evening.We are working on making an application where Captains can manage their teams, enter scores and publish them. So no worry about them calculating the scores based on formulae, everything will be automated.
It is captain's responsibility to verify mock scores of members in his team. If anyone is found to be publishing wrong scores, the whole team is disqualified. The admins have the right to verify scores if and when required.
Q.5. What are the benefits ?
1> You are able to make focus groups in your city and work together.
2> Members will get their team ranks in their user profiles.
3> The top team of the month will be featured on PaGaLGuY's homepage with photos and profile of each member.( substitutes included )
4> PaGaLGuY.com will arrange expert sessions for the teams in their respective cities.
5> Certificates of appreciation and helping others to team members if as a team their is marked improvement in team's overall performance by end of Mock season.
6> Opportunity to learn, strategize, motivate and organize your preparation this year.
7> You are never alone . :D
8> Free merchandise like tees for the team members.
To add to this, we will be trying to get sponsors for this whole product. If we are able to do that, expect lot of rewards and incentives for the performances. Individual as well as team.By performance, we do not mean just high percentiles, but we will be looking at enthusiasm, zeal and improvement.
Q.6 How does substitutions work?
1> A captain can chose top 11 performers from his 15 member team and publish the scores provided -
- Rank 1 and Rank 11 members of a team have to be compulsorily included in the next mock scores.
- A player has not been part of the first 11 for publishing of the scores for consecutive 3 times. (everyone should get a chance )
2> There may be cases when a team has to retire a member from his team for some reasons. e.g. Disillusionment with MBA or something like that. In cases like that, a captain is allowed to replace this member with a new one. Maximum of 3 replacements will be allowed per season.
Q.7. What is role of Coach and Manager ?
Ans . Coachs and Managers will be preferably those people who have been there and done that. These are people who can motivate the team, keep them together and help them in devising strategy , guidance along the prep .
Coach should be someone who has been through the grind of MBA entrance prep . He may be someone who has already got admission in a B-School or he can be someone who is appearing for CAT again.
Managers, as the term imply, will manage the team, resources, meets etc in co-ordination with the captain.
Few things to note
1>The decision of administrators will be final in case of any conflict. We will welcome queries from members but decision of incorporating those belongs to the administrators.
2>The administrators have the right to change the rules for the betterment of the league during the season.
3>Additions to this concept will be made as the season progresses. It is a new product for us, hence be patient. We all will have our learning curve this year. Do understand, this is a new baby, and it will need lot of support and care to take it to next level in coming years.
Finally, let us not forget the real purpose of this league. The real purpose is to create more dream teams, to instill the feeling of helping around each other and give our best shot to the task at hand, i.e. getting into the B-School of our dreams. This is, at the end of the day, meant to strive ourselves making us better people in life, not hardcore competitors. It is meant to enjoy the success of people around us and share our ups and downs with others.
Important dates
Finalisation of team members, captains etc Wednesday, 9th July
First Sunday, whose mock scores will be taken in account 6th July

hi all,

i have been consistently scoring %iles in the range of 90-95. And in the last 5 mocks i have cleared all the cutoffs twice and the sectional cutoffs the rest of the times except the overall cutoff by a few marks. also VA is my weak section where i just manage to clear the cut offs.

what should i do now, as only 2 mocks are left, to improve my performance considerably so as to clear the overall cutoff as well? It would be really helpful if one of you replies. thanks a lot in advance..

Guys i guess It's pretty late already .....

I totally support Greenspan in his concern and wud like to raise a few doubts :

Firstly i wanted to ask why can't one of us start a thread for UDT and BBLT 2008 and then invite the last yr members to moderate coz without the initiative i guess it's going to
take another few weeks.( Each day counts !!!)

Secondly I have already posted this on a number of threads but i didn't see a lot of enthu.
So without an official thread I guess its never going to take up a firm shape.

Lookin forward to a warm response from u guys.I wud love to see a thread coming up for both these teams.Not only the members,but all the ppl who'll visit the thread wud benefit from it.And it will again give a sense of competition to the DT as in all the previous years .

Thanks man, but I will tell you a small story here.

Last year, I joined IMS and TIME test series. Scored a consisten top 5 in IMS and 10-15 AIR in TIME (without missing any cut offs).

But on the doomsday, I spent like good 65-70 mins on VA and managed a 76%ile in the section and an over all percentile of 99.5. So you see my point, all these mocks count for nothing comes the final day. Its just the matter of that day and those 2.5 hrs ... nothing else matters.

Anyway, this I will advice to everyone else as well, no one is sure of a call, and this holds both for people who are doing exceptionally well in mocks and those who are doing not-so-good. A single good day can change it all, so keep trying :)

And yes, that explains why I still want to consider myself an underdog (I am not counting on me cracking the CAT ... ).

Anyway, how r the team members going to be chosen? random nominations?

Ah... it feels good to post after such a long time. To answer St. Peter at heaven's gate, I thought I would do myself a good deed today. Sorry for being selfish that way.

I presume a summary of what I have seen in the PGPL teams' threads so far ( as a guest), however inane or disrespectful I may seem, I hope will hurt no one.

1. Wide coverage by roping in cities, has been substituted for quality. By quality, I refer to ones' Sense of belonging, O type(universal donors), Activity and Passion, which I hereby christen, oh so ostentatiously, as the SOAP factor. I see almost all the teams having so many members who lack the SOAP factor so much, that I feel its time all of us took a bath. I realize that not everyone is as jobless as I am right now, but maybe one just needs the right platform.
   

1. Barring Chennai , Kolkata and Mumbai (and maybe a few others), I see no one else discuss concepts. As Anir (anir-iim2005) mentioned over and over again, those few snippets could mean the difference of a few calls, at the end.
   

1. There are very few cross-talks happening across the teams, apart from posts from stalwarts such as somname, The Raven, and harshadk, that get distributed everywhere. I feel a congregation of like-minded members will do a lot of good to PG as well as the individual members.
   

1. The scores have not been updated for a long time now, and I do not know the reason why. I agree it is a trivial issue, but why not do it when it is there?
   

Last year, DT and UDT and BBLT may have had lesser posts than all the city teams combined today, but they probably boast of more number of views. Enthusiasm was concentrated in the 3 threads and so was comradeship.Now that the city DTs have done their intended job, maybe it is time we took it to the higher level.

In lieu of the aforementioned points, and as the silent but passionate observer, may I be active enough to open the following threads, which will aim to do what the PGPL - which I still maintain is a commendable pursuit - may have missed out upon.

Dream Team 08 - will/should consist of people who may lack the SOAP factor, but blind us by their lightning scores in their ongoing mocks.

Underdogs Team 08 - will/should consist of people who bathe in the SOAP almost daily, and also possess an uncanny knack of giving the DT guys a complex on their lucky day.

Having said so much, I leave it up to the mods to find a way out., though I still remember estranged_gnrs's words a few months ago.

As for the PG Dream Team , we surely will have it, and we do have ideas about it. Just the platform might be different.

A case of score tampering has been reported by Kolkatta Team Captain Rik_12. Couple of his team members have given bloated up scores & the final scores were otherway round, when he checked..Request you all to kindly check the scores of your team members(by taking their user IDs/Passwords of TIME?IMS?CL etc) & then enter it in the sheet..

Others/Members of the Teams

PGPL is definitely intended for fun, but as every sport which is intended for fun has certain basic ethics, even PGPL has..

Tampering scores-I dont know what was the reason behind..Fun intended or just to prove a point that XYZ is good at demoralising others by just posting scores which they dont deserve to post as it doesnot belong to them..

Remember this advice goes to one & all..If you are not ashamed to score low marks, why should you be ashamed of posting it????

PGPL is definetely a stress reliever in the preparatory process..There is nothing you are going to get by posting high scores here in PG & finally land up with a score which you yourself will never forget & forgive...

Last, but not the least..Take things in the right perspective..Be ethical, people will respect even if you fail..

I do hope & believe that none of us here (except but the two whoever has done this)..But lets do continue our ethical nature till the end & enjoy the fun..

Lets stay in our limits or stay away from the fun..

I myself got pathetic scores in consecutive mocks and thus asked my cap to not to include me in the team...alas..but he had to as there were no other members...(not everyone appeared for the mocks, it seems). I was really depressed at that time, but now I think I did the right thing by reporting the low scores, however low they wer(as low as 78%ile).

P.S. :- A note to everyone, posting fake scores will just make you feel big on a superficial level....deep down you will be just guilty..nothing else...and don't forget..NO MOCK SCORE IS GOING TO VOUCH FOR YOU ON 16TH NOVEMEBER.. I know it was a bit loud...but I equally think it was necessary...

P.S. :- I expect a number of groans now.

I think you should PM respective captains in order to find out how many puys r from PT test series....But everything said...I think the PGPL is already into its 2nd month...so m not sure if you can get into a team or not....Coz it is possible only if some team member leaves the PGPL....only then a new member(apart from remaining 14) can be induced....I think you should better PM either Rohit..(The puy who has started this thread) or the captains of various teams(you can find the links to various teams in the first page itself)..

Besides....the main motto of PGPL is the same as of the person whoz not the member of any team...---TO CRACK CAT....so i would like to suggest you to concentrate on that ....rather dan being disappointed in case you don't find a place in a team... cheers..

An update from Chennai DT

We had an amazing expert session yesterday and some very erudite experts to say the least graced the session :D

Manish Narang - IIFT, IIT Kgp, Acad head of CL Chennai
Jaganath Prasad - IIM-L, IIT Madras - Business Head of CL Chennai
Mahesh - IIM -C and IIT Bombay (Guest expert)

They exchanged some amazing gyaan tips. It wasn't a session on shortcuts, speed maths, etc.

This was more to do with common sense and keeping your cool given the fact that it's a DT team and assuming that they are pretty cool on their fundas. And rightly so :D

VA has been a major problem for Chennai Dt and thus this was taken care of in the session. Some useful tips on how to go about handling VA in a test.

Starting with ur most comfortable area first and then proceeding towards your challenges with greater confidence :D

Allocating time to every chunk in VA section. Example taking individual care of parts like Para completions, Jumbled paras, sentence corrections, FIJs, RCs etc.

They also suggested that we go about attempting the RC section first and then the VA section. Another important point was to spend 1.5 times the amount of time on RCs that u spend on VA. RCs are sine-qua-non when it comes to cracking CAT and everyone knows this :D

Had a great PPT on cracking VA :D

Would try to ask them for the same PPT so that I can upload it on PG. Sorry, couldn'y get the video of the session I thought it cud have mighty helped.
