suppose I give u bag 1 with 2 red balls 4 black balls 6 blue balls and 8 green balls and bag 2 with 1 red 2 black 3 blue and 4 green. now 1 ball is transferred from bag 1 to bag 2 and then a ball is drawn from bag2.probability that it is red? So i think taking four cases can become cumbersome

But what i do is

when 1 ball is transferred from bag 1 to bag 2, the no.of balls in bag 2 will become 11

with 1+ 2/20= 22/20 red balls so probability of red = (22/20)/11= 1/10

I divided it into 2 cases :

CASE 1

Ball transferred from bag 1 to 2 is white
Probability of choosing a white ball from bag 2 = 5/9 * 8/17

CASE 2

Ball transferred from bag 1 to bag 2 is black

I divided it into 2 cases :

CASE 1

Ball transferred from bag 1 to 2 is white
Probability of choosing a white ball from bag 2 = 5/9 * 8/17

CASE 2

Ball transferred from bag 1 to bag 2 is black
Probability of choosing a white ball from bag 2 = 4/9 * 7/17

Adding probabilities from cases 1 and 2
(40+28 )/9*17 = 4/9

How about this for a method

when first ball is transferred from bag 1...assume it to be split in the ration 5:4

so in bag 2 it becomes white ball= 7+5/9= 68/9 and black ball= 9+4/9= 85/9

now probability of white ball= 68/(68+85)= 4/9

while actually solving during the exams you can just do like this

7+5/9= 68/9 9+4/9= 85/9 answer= 68/(68+85)=4/9 i think 10 seconds is enough for this

2)now if he had chosen black ball from 1 and then white from 2: 4/9 * 7/17=28/153
adding 1 and 2:

Hi SBTians.

I have a suggestion. Can we all start posting in perfect English?
Many of us use Hinglish here or maybe we play a lot with the punctuation marks(like the double triple fullstops.... )
If the suggestion is implemented, each and every one of us would be bound to post only in English and that too impeccable one. If any member goes wrong, others would have complete authority to correct him/her then and there and also explain the grammar rule which had been flouted.
In this way, we can, without much input, prepare solidly for the sentence correction questions which most of us are in awe of.
Henceforth all of us would keep the following most basic things in mind while posting here.

1. The verb agrees perfectly with the subject.
2. The adverb/preposition/article/adjective/modifier used is correct.
3. Small things such as punctuation marks, capital letters, spellings are in order.
4. Usages of the words are correct.
5. Short Messaging Service language is not used.
6. Short forms are not used.

If everybody in the team agrees to this, we can implement it right now and the posts hereafter will start getting screened and errors, if any, will be rectified then and there. It's just that one should not feel bad if his or her posts and pointed out repeatedly and corrected. It is for his/her own good.

Accuracy has been my forte and my attempts would be lesser than most of the other DT members im sure. So i plan to stick with this and every Q i attempt i want to ensure its correct.In the next two months i plan to take as many mocks as possible to set my temperament right as you never know what you are going to encounter on DDAY .
I believe the more you pratice and the harder you work the lesser you leave the final result on things like FATE :D

A layman approach to Quant section of CAT.
This is for people who come here for suggestions and improvements upon score after trying hard and failed. Have simple strategy, once the strategy is in place, it will start materializing.
All you need to know is little Math and have composure while solving any question.
If a layman can crack a quant section of CAT, I believe most of you definitely can.
So how does a layman approaches quant section of a CAT paper?
Section one starts, Nightmare question at the start, leaves it. Starts clicking next button and identifies 10 questions which can be solved by assuming values or back substitution of the options, does them perfectly in 30 mins.
Let say he is weak in DI too, Solves 4 of them taking 20 mins.
More 20 mins to go, and 14 done perfectly.
Now he chooses the other version of his strategy and attacks quant section, that is eliminate two options and going for educated guess within the other two.
Let say he does 7 questions, ( that is 3 mins each) and if he can get 2correct and 5wrong still he is not at a loss ( considering this as a worst case)
Let say he gets 4 correct and 3 wrong => 9 marks
So his final score looks like 14*3 + 9 => 51
So, if a person who knows nothing can score like this, you obviously can.
Make list of strengths and work on those for perfection.
Weakness, make guesses (I say educated guesses, not merely selecting one of four options)
So your bench mark score should always be >= 42 and from there it all depends on how best you utilize last 20 mins making educated guesses.
To make this approach work, be clear headed with whether to attack a question or leave a question.
Because there will always be 50% of the questions which can be solved by anyone, so all you need to do is do them perfectly.

Hmm..shashank's DT-11 team members would be a good motivating force for the next upcoming DT members.i hope every one of the DT-11 member convert A,B,C,XL and other elite B-schools.well though i am not giving CAT this year but still would like to share a bit of experience how to go about MBA exams

while i was working in German Private industry as RF Engineer to which projects from ISRO bangaalore,SAC ahmedabad,DRDO/DRDL were outsourced,guys here used to make agroup like TIME,CL,IMS students divide the topics among themselves weekly basis for example in quant for a group of 14 ,2 of them will prepare a topic say number system,geometry etc.. now the task is to solve mock questions(atleast 10-12) 2-3 different ways( as for quant) rather than just solving 30-40 problems like in excercises coaching institutes give.
this gives a better,quicker,efficent way to attack the approach of the problem.thats what a company expects from manager to get feasible solution effectively with minimum utilization of time and respurces.

similar way goes for DI/LR for CAT or AR/DM for XAT.as for verbal guys refer to different magazines online content like TIME magazine,The Economist,Frontline etc and discuss the content as well as anybody coming up with new words will discuss among themselves.i suppose DT members go ahead with such kind of discussion based on typical type questions over a range of topics covered in CAT then it would over all help in cracking/converting calls from elite B-schools(P.S.)

now for a short while i was on trip to china on behalf of company where i got opportunity to visit the campus HKUST(Hong Kong university).the intenrational student strength comprised of 80% of total strength,out of which 15% being of Indian origin.the kind of teaching methodology they have is application based which ithink is most prevalent in IIM A next being ISB.i hope such teaching methodoloy if adopted for other elite B- schools along with diversified range in alumini from divresified cultures,work sectors and interest to puruse their careers in same/different sectors based on their experience this would be overall beneficial even for Indian students who will get better chance in interacting with such international students.

Awesome DT.....socha tha pehle post karuga.....bt somehw wasnt in the right mood due to UDT reject......Due to the strenous job schedule i havent been able to devote much time to cat prep & hence a fall in %iles.....most of the uninvigi mocks i gave wer at absurd times(read 6am)......& invigilated ones at places arn 20km faroff.....now that i kno how to adjust(read bunk ) & location of centres(closer thn 20km ones) i think i am getting bk on track(4 Toppers list's in 4 consecutive mocks...:) )......
Par ab inspire ho rha hu DT ke dhamakedaar performers & performances ko dekh kar....& i wow to bounce bak harder (from an elastic surface with elasticity e>1....:P:P).....
I feel this team has the potential to pass even the 99.9 average %ile barrier......n i earnestly hope they do.....will be pestering u guys for help & improvemnt.....:)

P.S:BDT'11 should be renamed as DT 2.....guys beware it cn give DT a run for its money....:P

The DT ought to update their Scores and percentiles within 2 hours of the results being declared and please keep checking the google doc regularly, the one i sent you , if you are not able to find the link check the google group you ll find it !!

The reason you ought to check the doc is that new columns will be propping up now and then and its important that every one of us contribute their relevant data ... and also no filling the data for others its fun but at the same time loses the purpose !! ....

We had this series question in AIMCAT 1213.

Find the value of

0!(1^2+1-1) + 1!(2^2+1-1)+ 2!(3^2+3-1) ......... 20!(21^2+21-1)

1) 19! + 20! - 2
2) 21! + 20! - 1
3) 22! + 20! - 2
4) 22! + 21! - 2

Ans: There can be a shorter way of sloving this but I always solve these kind of series questions ,in which the sum of series is an expression similar to terms of the series, by a particular way.

Number of terms = 21 = n

Represent the options in terms of n by assuming that n=21.
Option 1 is (n-2)! + (n-1)! - 2
Option 2 is (n)! + (n-1)! - 1
Option 3 is (n+1)! + (n-2)! - 2
Option 4 is (n+1)! + (n)! - 2

Now take the sum of first 2 terms of the series
i.e 0!(1^2+1-1) + 1!(2^2+1-1) = 1+5 =6

Find the value of each option by replacing n=2 in the above expressions.

Only option 4 i.e (n+1)! + (n)! - 2 gives the answer as 6.

The process may seem lengthy now but it won't take more than 2 mins to solve any kind of similar series question. I normally waste 2 mins in modifying the series and cancelling the terms and then giving up but this way it's peace. Even then I score paltry 30-40 in QADI. HELP!
