On the website it says, the results will be declared on 18th April, 2008 and classes will be commenced on 30th June, 2008.

no, u don't need to carry any CV... the profile sheet they hv provided with, is enough...

I think it's better to take them along, esp the CAT admit card and scorecard as these are the ones that are checked for sure

I think they may be having score slabs such as
90-93: 30 marks
93-95: 50 marks
95-98: 65 marks
98+: 75 marks

This is just my view that things may work this way as this is the most logical according to me..... Another way is to work according to the unitary method..... Thus, 91 out of 100 would mean:

91/100 * 80 = 73(approx)
but this method would mean that the difference between a 91 %iler and a 99 %iler is only 6 marks(99 %ile means approx 79 marks), which I feel is not very practical.....

These are two methods I can think of, although I feel they probably would be using the 1st method...... I don't think anyone else apart from the panel themselves knows exactly what method is being employed, so I suggest there's no point in worrying about these facts.....

the specialization specification is not ur final decision u make it in second year
however to check how clear u r about ur plans
just put the option with which u have maximum familiarity

I had called up the somaiya office yday and they said it was ok if we added extra sheets..dnt know why some Puys have been scaring ppl saying that it has to be finished in the space given..!!

Do take the photocopies if possible n also get them attested. if possible, u can also take the print-out of the CAT-score card.
U can mention atleast 2 strengths/weaknesses each, n be prepared for another 2 if asked in PI, with justification for all of them.(i mentioned 2 each in my form n wasn't asked for more but was asked to justify those in PI).

mine was on 16th march ... and we were all work ex people...
we were initially given 2 topics .... to write ...: 1 sports need foreign coaches 2 tech innovations have made our life simple or complicated...
then tere was psychometric test..
after that we were called ina room in front of 2 member panel....
that was case study on internet usage in india....... firstly ther was extempore n after that discussion but everyone else except two of us was doing blah blah from outside n his own life n quoting figures... w t f yar.....
then there was PI on HR question basically..
all those questions
why mba?
why operations?
which book u read?
which newspaper? why?? editors?/
then why u quit ur last job?
what ur goal in life n plzz nomotherhood statements.....??
ur strenghts, hobies..
they were quite informal .. as if they had already slected the candidates thru their profile..
who knows....
but i m keeoing my fingers crossed...

dude according to their adm brochure here are the figures u asked for

CAT - 80
GD - 30
PI - 50 (including work experience)
Written Comm test - 15
Past Academic Record - 25
total is 200 marks....

Had my GDPI yesterday...as everyone must be aware of the whole process, i'll just give an outline...

first document verification, then essay...u can choose from two topics...15 mins to write...1st topic was "Are the stock markets the real indicators of our economy?"
the second topic was something about indian fast food outlets competing with mcdonalds et al..cant remember the exact topic as i wrote on the stock markets one...


then a psychometric test...very simple...the kind that frequently appears in magazines and self help books, etc...all of u must have tried something similar atleast once... :D

GD was a case study on reckless driving...it covered drunken driving, underage driving, bribing the traffic police etc...we had to list various ways in which we can make our roads safer...
10 participants..each one had to speak for 90 seconds first...then the discussion was open...for 15 minutes i think...when 1 minute was remaining, they asked us to summarize...
it was an okayish GD...only 4 people were participating..the rest just spoke 2-3 times throughout..

PI was very casual...the panelists were cracking jokes throughout the interview...it lasted for more than 20 minutes...a bit long, compared to other institutes' PIs.

some of the questions that i remember...
tell us a little about urself
why mba? why not further studies in grad area??
tell us what u know about IPL...will it be successful...business model...
poor condition of hockey...comparison with cricket...
which movie have u seen recently? what did u learn from it?
the last book u have read...what is it about? author? other books by him?
strengths/weaknesses...justify...
national flower & animal of india?? why?
other calls?? preference??
describe the other GDPI processes attended by u...what was the topic of the gd at each one? how did u contribute?
why finance as specialization??
ur hobbies? some questions on them...
some acads related questions...
any questions??

You have to write it in the space provided.... Keep it brief and precise and leave the explanation part for the PI.... All the best....

all answers have to be HANDWRITTEN clearly on the profile sheet, well WITHIN the space provided for answers...
no extra sheets r allowed to be attached..

well mine was at 1:30 n i got free at 6:30...
so it may b possible u get free earlier also as it depends totally on the group n sequence number u r allocated to....

they have given about 2000 calls for 180 seats, thats what was declared in delhi by the faculty

Had GDPI on 23rd feb 0900 batch at PESIT, Bang.

The process consists of :
1. Essay writing.
2. Psychometric Test.
3. Case Study Discussion.
4. Personal Interview.

Reached PESIT before hand at 0830, as they had asked.
Nice college btw with nice crowd.
I saw many familiar faces of ppl i have met earlier at GLIM or IMI.
Total candidates present - whooping 84 !!!!
7-9 faculty members were there from SIMSR, with 1 alumni.

1st step - successful registration. Here u need to produce ur personal form.

2nd step - some prsentation on SIMSR and then queries asked to their faculty.

3rd step - 2 topics are given and every1 has to write an essay on any1. timelimit given was 15 mins and wordlimit was 300 words.
Topics to choose from :
a.) Are big countries are responsible for environmental degradation ?
b.) Should Indian retail focus on big players ? how to handle the small players in business ?
These are not the exact topics but the theme was pretty similar to what i have written.

4th step - Psychometric test. This involved 46 odd questions about ur personality traits and moral values.
Depending upon how u would relate yourself to the questions there were 5 choices to answer from, ranging in the extent of similarity.
time limit given - 15 mins

5th step - Case Study discussion.
all of us were divided into groups of 12 according to our SIMSR form nos. the panel consisted of 3 ppl - 1 faculty from SIMSR, and 2 other i thnk were from the college itself or could be current students.

Case given to us involved the scenario of present day india were average age of a person is increasing every year. Nowadays old ppl are not focussed upon by their children and have to live their later phase of life in sorrow and grief. Non-appropriate financial structure alongwith ignorance from the younger generation has made the situation very pathetic. What steps should government take to improve a situation like this.
'IS OLD AGE A CURSE ?'

discussion started off with a 1.5 min intro monologue from every1 present in the group. here every1 put fwd their original thoughts about the case.

this was followed by 12 minutes of discussion, which was living dangerously on the border of being a fish market. I put forward my points with authority and had to be a bit rude at one point of time.:bad-word:
every1 kept discussing bout the financial aspects of old age living. I had to bring in the social and the ethical aspects as well. overall the discussion was not healthy as not many valid points were made and we were made to stop straightaway after 12 mins vthout any1 summarising. only 4-5 of us were participating :sleepy:. but i was personally satisfied vth my efforts as i could get the airtime 3 times and gave my points with loads of authority. lets hope for the best.

6th step - Personal interview.
the panel changes for PI from the 1 which took GD. 1st we need to submit out personal form alongwith the work experience certificates, if any.
my panel consisted of 2 profs - P1 (was very relaxed all the time and also friendly) & P2 (was being tough on me the entire interview).

P1 - goodmorning Aditya.
Me - goodmorning sirs !!

P1 - so u are a technical guy... in which specializtion u did ur BE
Me - told them bout engineering and also that now i am in IT, working vth satyam.

P2 - you are earning a handsome salary in satyam, then why MBA ?
Me - was prepared for this and answered confidently.

P2 - y not go for executive mba then ?
Me - tried explaining the differences but was cut short by an interruption from P1.

P1 (interrupting my answer in the middle) - Which domain and technology are u into satyam ?
Me - Banking and mainframes.

P2 - so u have plans to go to australia ? (was referring to the onsite oppurtunities, with my client being from australia)
Me - successfully explained on y i liked India and didnt wanna go if given an option. but if company demands, will go ahead.

P1 (again cuting me short) :x- which movies have u seen recently ?
Me - English - Rambo, Hindi - Taare Zameen Par.

P1 - compare the 2 movies and also the message conveyed through them, if any.
Me - ;-)gave an in-depth desc of the two. stressed on emotional effect of TZP and the message about violence in burma of Rambo. (talking about movies is the best thing i can do.) :smile:

P1 (smiling) - did u go to TZP alone or vth parents ?
Me - "went alone but made a request to my parents to watch it ASAP. they liked it alot."

P2 - U have mentioned reading as ur hobby. which is the latest book u have read ?
Me - Alchemist by Paul Coelho (i know i am late in reading this, but it was really the latest i had read)

P2 - wats special bout the book and whats the message conveyed ?
Me - told bout following dreams etc. compared the book with other self-help books.

P2 - but the book is hypothetical and cannot be implemented in real life ?
Me - agreed to some extent and then had a small discussion with P2 of the level upto which we can make things happen.:argue:

P2 - (ques out of nowhere) Don't u think the salaries being paid to IT guys is very exorbitant and they dont deserve it ?
Me - disagreed and tried to explain how the high salaries are justified. used terms like work pressure, competition, delivery time etc.;-)

P2 - so u mean to say a nuclear scientist in BARC handles far less pressure than an IT engineer ? (nuclear guy earns 20k and IT earns 25k, according to P2).
Me - "both handle different pressure in different situations, but then the experience comes into picture. IT professionals are young college graduates new to organisation world. BARC scientists have loads of experience behind them. also their responsibilites differ alot."

P2 & P1 both nodded their heads in agreement to my answer and finally P2 smiled (phewww !!!).:biggrin:

P2 - you can ask a question from us if u want.
Me - asked a question in a relaxed manner.

P1 gave back with an answer and after finishing the answer smiled at me and told me the interview is over. i was asked to leave and to call the next guy in.

My interview went on for 18-20 mins. they tried to make it tough but somehow i managed to duck their blows.... somehow :shocked:

can you tell me what is the selection ratio...and is there some kind of quotas regarding the number of people they are gonna select from CAT, XAT etc...

u can attach extra sheets. i hav asked the admissions office. they hav said that there is no word limit & u can attach extra sheets if necessary. even i hav attached 2 extra sheets.

When i attended the gd pi they didint asked for any of teh attested copies or even xerox...
they just checked the profile form and the CAT score card....

no as mentioned in the post above yours its just to see what your idea for your mba is... it would also lead to some basic questions in that field just to see if your serious about it...

the specialization is decided only in the 2nd year and that too by which all electives you take...

yes... its just for there reference n judjing ur clarity of mind they ask for it now...
1st yr is general n spec. is chosen in 2nd yr. n can b different from wht u mentioned in form...

I had a few queries it would be very helpful if some one could help me out.
Query
1. what is the total nos os seats in KJ Somaiya for PGP in MBA
2. are there specific seats alloted for Finance ( I have applied for finance)
3.I work for a KPO in Finance sector would this affect my chances as some people dont consider the KPO buisness as "FINANCE"
4. If I specify the Branch I want to join would tht mean I cant change later.(Finance to marketting)
5. Also I am not so knowledgable about STOCK market do I have to prep in detail about stock market as I want to get into investment banking after my MBA and not the STOCK market.

2. I don't think so. Every college has a minimum no. for each specialization, meaning that if less than those no. of students apply for a specialization, they won't be allowed, but I don't think there's a maximum limit. Although it depends on individual college's policy.

3. & 5. I think if you're specifying Finance in the interview, it means they expect you to know somewhat about Finance and atleast have a clear view on why you want it and what are your plans etc. Just specifying and not being able to justify could leave a bad impression

4. I think the choice has to made in the 2nd yr. Here you only have to specify sot that they get to know about your plans etc.

I had a few queries it would be very helpful if some one could help me out.
Query
1. what is the total nos os seats in KJ Somaiya for PGP in MBA
2. are there specific seats alloted for Finance ( I have applied for finance)
3.I work for a KPO in Finance sector would this affect my chances as some people dont consider the KPO buisness as "FINANCE"
4. If I specify the Branch I want to join would tht mean I cant change later.(Finance to marketting)
5. Also I am not so knowledgable about STOCK market do I have to prep in detail about stock market as I want to get into investment banking after my MBA and not the STOCK market.
