This, a true story, is by far one of the most inspiring anecdotes I've ever come across...

When war broke out between Spain & the United States, it was very necessary to communicate quickly with the leader of the Insurgents. Garcia was somewhere in the mountain vastness of Cuba- no one knew where. No mail nor telegraph message could reach him. The President must secure his cooperation, and quickly.
What to do!
Some one said to the President, "Theres a fellow by the name of Rowan will find Garcia for you, if anybody can."
Rowan was sent for and given a letter to be delivered to Garcia. Rowan took the letter, sealed it up in an oil-skin pouch, strapped it over his heart, in four days landed by night off the coast of Cuba from an open boat, disappeared into the jungle, & in three weeks came out on the other side of the Island, having traveled a dangerous country on foot, and delivered his letter to Garcia,

Just came back to this forum and saw my post in this same page. Now I am writing this post around 8months after that post and I am sitting in NITIE Campus. I guess my belief did pay me off and some of the posts in this thread has really had helped me out a lot.

Being inspired, certainly drives us, motivates us to go for the kill, but we have to realize that its not all about being inspired, at the end of the day an inspired person is bound to fail if his actions don't produce the desired result.

Its like when nothing seems to help, If you go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and you know it was not that blow that did it - but all that had gone before.Amazing isnt it!

One of the most inspiring statements I have read till date. The reason I came here was simple, to get some inspiration. Till date, I have never flunked in VA section (last 2 CATs, VA was above 95%) and now I'm seeing that in mocks (esp. CL) that my mock VA scores are going down (pathetic to be exact).

But the one thing that has taken me forward and still pushing me forward is one instance that happened in CAT 2008. Then it was like I was the baap of verbal in my region. And then came CAT 2008 and as usual, was pretty happy with my attempts in VA. Then came the shocker. The keys were released by various institutes and to my complete shock, I was getting pathetically low scores. And I flunked my university exam just because I got depressed. And then the next shock. CAT 2008 results came in and I was having a VA percentile of 97 with overall 93.

One thing I learnt from this instance, CAT is not the ultimate thing in your life and whatever happens, life just goes on. There's always a next time. And that on the day of the CAT, no matter what happens, even if I'm pathetic with my scores in VA, I'l make it big in CAT this time. Somehow I believe that I won't let myself down on that day.

THE OBSTACLE IN OUR PATH
In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.
Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.
Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.
Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.
Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.
The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

"It`s foolish to chase wild visions."
Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.
He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.
It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.
He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.
For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.
Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.
Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

I've taken CAT twice ('08 might be my lucky time! ) and I've seen tens of people taking it...some falling flat on their face and some going all the way to the top.

I've come to realize that the major thing that separates those who do well and those who don't is how they view the process.

The people who don't make it (I won't call them failures) are the ones who are focussed on the result...:nervous: will I get >99 %ile, will ABC call me, what if they change the pattern, what if i go blank in the exam blah blah.

While the ones who do make it are the ones who whole-heartedly enjoy the process. It's about the rush of preparation, the excitement of the exam...sure it's also about clearing the exam and getting those calls, but the focus should be on HOW and not WHAT IF.

I say, don't stop doing what you enjoy and don't be super-tensed about the exam. :chillpill:

The most important phrase in the CAT process is "Be Cool" .

First of all, Thanks a ton for this Great post.
All may be knowing about the Great book Thirukkural.
One verse in that book will be an great inspirational piece (for me it's always one) and it goes like this....

"Do not get bogged down by difficulty(to achieve) and greatness (in complexiety)of your goal, the labor you do(everyday to achieve that goal) will be a great inspiration to you (to achieve that goal)."

Buddy, i completely agree with u..Important is the instinct, the killer instinct..and if argessive naming makes you to throw a grunt outta in air and say this time am gonna do it then al is fair..My journey with CAT too was on the similar road as of yours... QA ditched me, but this time i am conspiring since begining to kill QA , DI too, and VA is proving to be my good friend..anyways people please post how you all are handling things like, low feeling, demotivation, and many such things.

PS: I am aware of "All i want to speak about CAT", but i think structure of this thread is somewhat diff. than the previous, this thread is meant so that all PUYS posting here can one day post in the thread like "IIM final call getters profile"

I am posting the reason for selecting the same username as this thread
Hope u all like it. This post is for inspiration of fellow puys who have been unable to do well in CAT for some reason or the other. So here goes....

My tryst with CAT started in 2005 when I first gave CAT. I faced the same exam first time without preparation, zilch knowledge as to what this exam was all about and full of foolish confidence. Needless to say my confidence fell on its face when the results came. First time I tasted failure. Subsequently I have given CAT two more times each time bettering my performance over last year and coming closer to the coveted IIM calls. Each time I encountered it on the morning of the third Sunday of every November for the past three years I thought that I had nailed it but each time it slipped through my grasp like a cunning animal. :bad-word:

Then one day I happened to watch Garfield movie on Star Movies and saw how the cat appeared so cute and innocent but indeed was a cunning and scheming being. That day I had the idea of creating my avatar. Each year I gave CAT it came to me in different avatars and in 2007 when it did come in its previous avatar it again slipped through my grasp because it again did something unexpected.

Then I changed my tactic from trying to tame the CAT or trying to bell it (preferences vary among puys) to trying to KILL THE CAT (so was born this username).
I agree that it sounds kind of violent but it does give me a whole lot more killer instinct than anything else. Every time I log onto PG it reminds of the yet unfinished pledge that made, the pledge to KILL THE CAT exam. emerge as a winner in this battle amongst equals.

In 2005 DI did me in, 2006 QA was the culprit and 2007 party was spoilt by VA. In 2008 I hope to nail all the three sections. People say CAT has nine lives for me it has just four; this year I claim the trophy.

PG remains my training ground where i perfect my old skills and learn some new ones.
