How true is it!!!!

As mentioned earlier, IIMC campus is Wi-Fi enabled : hostel rooms, Library, lecture halls and also near the Jetty over the lake ; and yes, speed is good enough for u to donate the lan cables to somewhere else
and for the System courses, a few have been mentioned already..

are spoling the general perception of infra@IIMs... Its not as bad here as the owner Rashmi Bansal of that most sorriest of all magazines JAM tried to put it across years ago... nor is it anywhere close to as bad as mentioned in the above thread (for another IIM)...

I have already posted about the infrastructure here in my very first post here... Do check it back again probably in the 1st or 2nd page here...

Obviously there is tremendous scope for improvement... But there is nothing wrong with the absolute basics... But clearly those used to a 5 star lifestyle might find it slightly uncomfortable here The student council/administration is trying to improve the condition continuously... Lets hope it only gets better...

For probably the only IIM with a swimming pool and the largest auditorium in the country I personally feel that the standards of the rooms and toilets could be improved! Though no worries about latches being non existent on the toilets

Another thing is that the campus needs another architectural revamp after 40 odd years of being the top two Business schools in India! Some kind of unique unifying architecture... which is Why Benninger is coming to help us...

Hey me too got into PGDCM in JOKA , waiting eagerly to get into JOKA

Adding to what libocta wrote... These 90 seats are the prime time seats some of which offer scholarships... Other than that there are three or more Bschools in Europe which have an "any number of students" relation with IIM Calcutta... Which basically means you guys send us 50 students and we will still take them all So yeah very officially speaking we have 300 seats on offer for the exchange program

But check out US Bschools... the best ones dont even have an exchange program... HBS, MIT... Though students can have a shorter trip to countries they want to explore... Many students just prefer to stay back and enjoy IIMC for their last year... A measure of the quality of life here... Once you come here you will realise Why there are many reasons to stay back... Well we got plenty of foreign students coming to IIM Calcutta itself... That is one good reason Calcutta is considered a cultural centre of India in the West and we have hordes coming here to check the place out... Hell! I aint going on exchange... I want to enjoy the fun right here

About Arijit Sen the Eco Prof with the most studliest of degrees PhD Princeton... Well Game Theory is hot and me hoping to learn it right from the Princeton Guru!

Good that u brought this up... Student exchange is what makes IIMC special considering the wide number of options students have here...
U get this opportunity in term 5 and get to spend the entire term on exchange.
To give u an idea, this yr there were ~90 something seats and we have only 68-69 heading to partner B-Schools! every yr there are more seats than people going out.
one of the reasons for this is again the amazing faculty u have here whom people dont wanna miss. e.g Game theory taken Prof Arijit Sen. This is one subject people wait to be taught by Prof Sen after their first interaction with him. No point for guessing which term Game Theroy is offerred.

1) Single rooms.
2) Yes u do. LAst yr a a deal was worked out. This yr too some thing might be done. But this might depend on the number of people willing to come done to Joka and havea dekho @ the deal.
3) for my batch, there enough number of sections to have a healthy CP. PGDCM folks attend the common lectures with PGDM. For PGDCM specific courses, Obv we leave them alone in a room

Folks... Its not a big deal... There are enough opportunities for folks without workex forget about the months requirements... But Yes... I can confirm that the minimum requirement for laterals is 10 months...

Look firstly... You almost sound tense mate... Relax... There is really no wrong decision here... In the case of B... there would be a wrong decision purely statistically speaking... The fees there is 1 lakh more overall!!! But about A... Well they are now our favourite cousins We have only love for them... If you choose A I would still wish the Best of Luck to you :)

Anyways pm me... For some personal insights... I am getting enough common pms about this topic... Openly let me tell everyone that personally I would want only the people who consider themselves a good fit at IIM Calcutta and have shown the courage to think differently to choose us over the magazine rankings... Really its that simple... If we had been number one ranked maybe the Indra Nooyi's and the only IIM billionaire Vikrant Bhargava would not have been IIMCians... and in there place we would have the typical Desi muggoos who think an education and a tag can turn them into great people

I am personally thinking about taking the Ecommerce or Data mining course from the DCM stable next term...

Even the Fin loving guys better understand that Foreign recruiters especially love people who can program financial models for them... They love people who are all into Fin and they also love people who have a good background in computers in addition to Fin... Taking a few good courses from DCM is always an option available to everyone...

First of all Thanx for the info.
But now, though I am being repeatedly warned against comparisons. I need your help in choosing between A and C. PMs would defintely help me a lot.
Now I should give some background of mine. Don't know whether that would have any significance in the choice I make.
I have done Dual Degree in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kharagpur (2006 Pass out).
For the Last one year I have ben working on Computational Fluid Dynamice.
Sure enough my primary interest is Finance. And that is why I want to go for Calcutta. ( Of course the fact that I am from Calcutta is there But that is secondary)
Now Family pressure is piling up. And sure enough the lower pressure point is Ahmedabad, that is they want me to go for A. Friends are considering me to be mad that I am even thinking of dumping A. And finally PGites in A, have started there brain washing work.
I sincerely need your help. It would be helpful if you could write in details. Thanx in advance

Still to reiterate:
PGDCM guys attend the same lectures as u do, go thru same placement process as others(i.e. PGDM) do 'n PGDCM is NOT an IT Course!!!!
U have enough # of engg colleges for that .
only difference being u have 1 or 2 (depending on term) Comp Science subjects in each term.
to give u an idea : PGDCM guys had to take up 3-4 comp Sci subject in entire one yr and they will have to take up about 4 more in 2nd yr.. thats out of about 36-40 compulsory subjects!
So if u r from IT/CE bacnkground , easy going for u here and if u not, still something new for u to learn!
and yes, PGDCM guys are exempted from the Qulifying MAths Exam!

PGDM and PGDCM are almost the same
Except for some ERP electives in the last sem

Also the ATM test they write, we have to take it in the first sem

Otherwise its just few subjects i the last sem.

1) Faculty Base: Trust me you wont find them any better than these 3 places. While C is known for its God-level fin and Eco profs, a little use of google will throw up names Leena Chatterjee and likes.
2) Alumni Network: B-schools are a wonderful ground for networking. Alumni network plays a big role in defining the type of companies which visit the campus consistently 'n also new ones. Check out the Alumni base in different companies
3) Number of electives on offer: They define whats on ur platter to choose from. IIMC has been fav destination of people over the years for this reason too.
4) Extra-curricular life: Since u wont be studying 24*7 and would need avenues for renewal, this is important aspect. Refer to the respective Life @ IIMx threads and also repective websites for more info on this.
5) Facilities on Campus: quality of Internet connectivity, strength of library being some of the imp things. btw IIMC has one of the oldest library of this country with extensive collection. other not so important factors for some could be a swimming pool, football outfield, Gymnasium et al.
6) Placement trends over the years: Believe i need not elaborate on the importance of this and many of the well read people on this forum would know the facts. for the ones still looking for details, placement info on respective B-School's website and news chips from MArch should be useful.:)
7) Campus life: I'll personally pay more importance to this than the city since any B-schooler will tell thats where he is during 90%+ time of 2 yrs!
So nothing like the stress busting serene lakes of IIMC . The kind of Camaraderie between PGP2s & PGP1s is something which defines the kind of good time u have on campus. Right from gyans during ur placements, to those tutorials before the all imp exams, to just a pep talk in the corridor when u stressed out is something which can only be expereinced!


YOur intentions of Specialization: This is also one of the important deciding factors. Though IIMC has been known for those heavenly Fin jobs & its Strong Systems background, a Marketing focused guy like me would tell you that oppotunites are just as good in Opern & Mkg :). Finding strenghts of A & B should be easy for u
9)Brand Equity in Corporates Circle: While the things for people outside would appear different at times, a little chat with the Corporate honchos should be insightful.
10) Pedagogy: this is important since it would decide how u learn over the next 2 yrs, how much time u get to THINK as DG mentioned.
11) City: While Bangalore is known for its climate and "kool" place for youngsters, Ahmedabad for the mouth watering delicacies, Kolkata is known not just for the history attached (after all good Ol' britishers had reasons to choose their Capital) but also for contributions to education. Guess that explains the quality of profs in the land of Tagore 'n Amrtya sen.:)
Did i forget to mention Rossogullas?

Am sure DG 'n others would add to this list whatever i might have missed out. and this list is in NO particular order of importance.
Am sure u will speak to lot of people before making the all important decision of ur career; and u'll also realise that there is very little to choose from these 3!
in the end the "small" factors like where ur girlfriend is might pull u to one of these 3 (someone reading this??) :neutral:

About the laptop... Yes There will be deals available on campus like last time... But many people had already bought their laptops by that time... I think a bunch of friends can just get together and talk to a dealer and get a good discount too... Infact pg folks got together had a deal last time and a few got a good deal right here... Maybe it will happen this time too!

I can tell you guys what I did... Bought a DELL 1505 (called 6400 in India i think) from the US through a cousin who luckily was coming around in May... Only risk is service issues if any in the first year... I had none The prices are almost Rs 10000+ lower for a laptop bought in the US!!

The most cost effective deals i think are DELL, HP and then IBM... Other low cost models are Acer etc... but i suggest stick to the top three unless cost is a serious concern...

Hey...


A little late to introduce... But better late than never...

I got through PGDM and will be taking it up....

IIMC has been a dream destination for me for the last 6 years - ever since my brother got into IIMC himself... I've been to the campus, stayed there for a weekend, enjoyed every moment... The wonderful lakes, the so called Howrah Bridge within the campus... And the HUGE auditorium...... It's still not sunk in for me that I will be there for 2 years!!

Qualifications : BTech, from CET (Trivandrum)
Work Ex : 19 months as of now, Infosys Bangalore.
Interests - Playing the keyboard, and computer programming (Internet Solutions Group, here I come!!), Cricket, Chess, Harry Potter trivia (I am a major HP freak)

Currently I know just one other person who is joining - Rakesh TP... My collegemate...

Really looking forward to meeting all of you....

Seniors - just one question... Hope this is not jumping the gun, but can you tell me how many months work ex is ESSENTIAL for Lateral Placements in IIMC? I have heard that the standard is 20 months... Need this info to see if I need to work till the week before joining IIMC (which will be approximately 21 months for me) or I can quit earlier itself...

I think we will know about configurations that are offered only when we reach there. Also it must have changed a lot in a year. So why worry about those. Let us enjoy the time that we have in our hand now

Is laptop compulsory in IIM C

Not compulsory but a much better option... As I said

Unlike other places We have a "working" WiFi here... Works everywhere including hostels, library and classrooms

Well, there is some technical snag due to which we are not able to rename "Iimc Pgdm/pgdcm 2007-2009" as "IIMC PGDM/PGDCM 2007-2009" :p

We are trying to fix this as a severity 1 issue till then chillax!
