Interview & Essay
Date:- 14 march,2012
Venue:- Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
Time:- 9 AM
I reached the venue quite early. Indian Habitat centre really is a beautiful place to be in. There were around 24-27 people divided in 3 equal groups.
The entire process started on time. First of all there was a verification of our original documents and everything.
Stage I :- Writting Ability Test(WAT)
There was a panel of 3 in front of us. (2 males, 1 lady). We were made to sit around a conference table according to a sequence.
A sheet longer than A4 size was given to us. It had the topic , space for personal information and space for rough work on one side.
Topic:- Medical tourism should be banned in India, as almost half of the Indian population do not have access to primary health care
We were to write a NOTE on the topic. Following were the instructions:-
1.10 mins to think and 20 mins to write
2. No bullet points, only paragraphs
3.Only pen to be used, no pencil to be used
4.Note to be written on other side of the sheet within the writing space. (which was a bit less thanA4 size )
My was a decent attempt. I wrote that medical tourism should not be banned. Gave various examples how it brings in revenue and how it can act as ancillary to primary health care etc.
Overall very nice attempt.

STAGE II:- Personal Interview
It was the same panel who was there at the time of essay writing.
we were called in the same sequence. My turn was 5th. People before me were having very general interviews. Nothing specific.
there were 3 people
lady professor(L), Middle professor(M), Right professor (R)
I do not remember the exact sequence of questions. But more or less it was this.
I:- good morning
L: good morning, have a seat.
M:- So u r from commerce. From which college? Oh SRCC, nice.
I:- yes sir..!
L:- (going through her laptop) U have not uploaded your non ragging disclosure and SOP??
I was taken aback. Due to some technical glitch they didn have my SOP. I asked them I could produce the hard copy of same. They agreed. And luckily I carried it with me. I brought it and showed it to them.
L and M were reading my SOP while R started
R:- So you have been working for 7-8 months in this firm.. what is this firm all about?
I:- Sir it is my family business. AndI began to explain about it.
(All three became very interested hearing I was from family business. Thereafter it ws all about my business, and my MBA and Business)
R:- How will this MBA help you in your business.
I:- Told him about the opportunity of increasing the scale and diversification of business, strategic decision making required , How MBA will be a tool in that
M:- So you will go and continue the family business.
I:- Yes I will, and told about plans of Export house.
R:- (seeming interested by the ans I gave for MBA and Business)
Tell me how decision making will help you.
I:- begin to explain
M:- Tell me what consideration will you take in mind before starting a business
I:- explained short term and long term opportunity and consistency etc
I was explain about the domestic consumption of Bicycle chains and Ludhianas contribution to it
(My city and My business)
R:- He got into facts and figures to find an approximate production and export of chains in India
I told him that production in an avg Indian plant is 6000-7000 chains per day. He took it as per month and calculated . Which led to some flaw in the stats I had initially mentioned. I couldnt spot out the mistake at that moment
He said my boy check your facts. They are wron. Never mind.
L:- So you are from Ludhiana, which is a cluster of business activities. What are the 2 benefits and negatives of operating in a cluster.
I:- explained nicely with practical problems.
M:- So what have u contributed to your firm, you are from SRCC, so good in finance and accounts I believe.
I:- Explained how I contributed to set up a systematic stock management system.
R:- He suggested some different method, and said come on you are a fresh enthusiastic new blod, bring in more ideas to your firm.
M:- So what happens to ur family business if you go for an MBA and you become an entrepreneur, and set up your own business
I:- though hesitant to say, but said that yes may be we give up with that business as , I am the only son in family. Then added that may be I bring in my own dad into the business and use his expertise.
M:- So he started relating to sunil Bharti mittal.
I:- (a bit happy) yes sir , he was from Ludhiana, initially in cycle business, and then to fruit farms and then telecom
L:- last quest from my side. Have you heard about the family business programme of ours? Why dont you go for that. ?
I:- I said sth which L and M were not satisfied with. As soon as I was getting into further explanation, he cut me.
M,L,R:- Thats all from us!! Any other questions you would like to ask us?
I:- Told them how this was a dream come true situation. And appearing for the interview round of the most prestigious college of country was really amazing!!
Then I enquired about what should I do for my SOP which is not in records of IIM B
they said me give it to the guy who is verifying the documents outside. I searched for him but could not find him. By the time interview for next student had started.
I went in and told them about the problem. Then they said mail it to IIMB well mention it. Before leaving I told R, that sir you made a mistake in calculating the production. It was 7000 chains per day and not month!! He started laughing and said, its better you are aware of it rather than telling me!!
I smiled and left!!
