Planning to quit the job next mnth, i want to give evrytng which ever it takes to crack the CAT.

I Have Do MBA at any cost next year.

Managing things with job is more difficult task for me, as our company doesnt give me that amount of time to prepare.

Please give me ur suggestions.

Dude u hav got a profile that is custom made for the IIM's....Take CAT 2012. Remember, you are going to do an MBA only once in a lifetime. So give your best and GO FOR THE KILL !!! And please dont leave your job...If your company can afford you 3 months leave then take it and prepare very seriously.. and do join bacck after 3 months bcoz in GD/PI's you can leaverage your answers and opinions very well if you have a live working experience...As far as ur CAT percentile is concerned, take lot of sectional tests dude and analyse them very well...PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE !!!

BY next month i wil b completing my one-year-training in my company after which i wil b given a permanent job.but i am in a thought as to quit after a month n prepare for CAT. also i am havin some personal pressure to quit my job. but i am scared if the drop wil affect my PI.I am also thinkin that i can improve my GK n other personality skills durin t drop..
is it ok to drop? also Is the time period from June to november enuf for crackin CAT 2012?

heyy.. ur profile is awesome.. i must say i'm jealous.. if ur confident then can drop for CAT.. 5-6 months prep is enough for CAT.. but, i'll giv some opinions of mine..

1). ppl generally do 2-3 yrs of service before dropping for CAT.. & as ur already 1 yr into ur job, u can consider taking dat route.. dis is to ensure dat u can take adv. of the lateral placemnts(min. 22 months service, depending on the company) wher ur offered higher positions/salary dan freshers in b-school plcmnts..

2). also, i wud like to state an eg. of my friend.. he also had gud profile(although urs is much better).. 85,85,70+(Mumbai Univ.).. he was working in reliance & seeing me decided to take a drop for CAT.. but, he found the prep a bit tough & had to take another job(dis tym wid jp morgan) within 5 months..

so, it all depends on u.. whether ur confident dat u can make it in 5-6 months time or not.. however, i wud lyk to say dat IIM's are not the end of the world.. dere r other excellent(if not better) b-schools around such as XLRI, FMS, JBIMS, SPJIMR, NITIE, MDI, IIFT, ISBB etc.. so, aim for all dese as well.. & i mean it..:)
P.S.: Since ur already into a job, I would suggest u to take the 1st route wich is taken by many..

I had horrible interviews hence I am not able to convert any of the IIM calls, that have declared results and expect the same in others also.

My Query is should I attempt Cat 2012 or should I call it quits?

What is the weight-age given to Acads Profile in Selection to iim's?

Is acad given weight-age in summer placement and Final placement also?

god, the iims are gonna adore you.. plz try harder for a better cat %ile, you have great acads and a good enough work-ex.. 4 hours per day is more than enough.. (i just did 1-2 hrs per day from august-nov. that's it).. i'd say you should definitely look farther than a not-so-reputed college...

Two three hours prepration will do enough for u guys. I am not that strong in quants. Need to improve a very lot. I need more time.
As everyone said, I will tell u that I am not gonna resign. But wat about the idea of a long leave say for three months to max or two months to the least. Will it affect me in further processes of intw

I can comment on this as i have already gone thru this situation..........completely taking a break from work is not a good option but if u r able to find any part time job which takes only a few hrs a week, then u can justify the same thing in ur interviews later......
profile building is what matters and if u do that in a certain way then taking a break will not reduce ur chances of converting any call......i think if u decide to take a break, then ur attempt shuld be a do or die attempt and u shuld be willing to take up the college that u get by ur marks if u dont want to search for a job again.....that is what will keep u motivated but u cannot depend on CAT entirely as in u cannot assure that if u get less marks this year then u can definitely crack it in the next attempt

kpo and bpo have equally taxing work life and dropping for CAT is totally unjustified. As it is IT experience is not really counted a lot , you can very well imagine how BPO jobs would be viewed.

besides you might be questioned in gd/pi why did you opt for a BPO/KPO job after passing out from a B.Tech college

I am working in TechM and has 2.5 yrs of work ex now, trying Cat from past 2 years but couldn't get above 60%tile .
I am not getting enough time to study as well and have a perception that it normally takes more time for me to grasp the same thing the other person takes.

I am wondering if i should give full time for the preparation to CAT'12 by leaving the Job?
This will be the last try for me , as parents forcing to marry asap,. I am not at all comfortable working in IT and dying to do MBA from top 20 college . Only problem is not getting enough marks from past two years :-(
my 10th : 72% cbse, 12th: 66% cbse, Engg: 69% RGPV.....i have started questioning myself if i am really eligible for top colleges, with such a low acads and considtent bad performance? I have very lil confidence left and CAT'12 looks like do or die for me...

Please do not leave your job for CAT. You may take long leaves or leaves without compensation for a month or two before the exam, but leaving your job altogether is a really bad idea.

Regarding your acads, they are surely a bit on the lower side, which will make it somewhat difficult for you to get calls from some premier institutes. However, not all institutes focus so much on acads.

Time management is the utmost important thing, I believe. Use that 4.5 hrs at its best. Read papers, read books, revise vocabs,formulas and shortcuts.
I know it's crazy. But once we get into a bschool life becomes like that. Take up this challenge and ace CAT.

My personal opinion is "not to drop". CAT is now more or less a gamble:splat:. Yeah!! I know hard work needed and all that stuff, I believe that too. 3 hours and phew!! I know some do hard work, intelligent enough but still they couldn't crack because of one section, cut-off and so and so.

Try to search a job which require less travelling and then prepare again. Job always help to prepare you mentally & financially if not methodologically.

Not advisable, your experience will help you get some brownie points. If your work-ex was 3.5 years, may be you could have taken that drastic step.

In college recruitment process, I got recruited in a company. After 6 months of job I resigned the company due to some problems. Now I want to go for CAT. In the meanwhile, I got job in one another company. But I haven't joined another company yet. So now I have two options- first is to join a company and then side by side prepare CAT and second as not to join a company and fully prepare for CAT. Well I am confused in these two options because I am afraid that what if I dont get time to study after joining company. And I really don't want to give one more year to CAT as I wish to take admission for MBA in 2013 academic year itself. So, in my case would the drop be justified. And also even after scoring well in CAT would it make a difference in getting a call from IIMs as I would be treated as a fresher (as there are no points for a work ex of 6 months). Please help me with some suggestions.

You should join that company. CAT is not going to end in 2013. Being a general category engineer fresher, you would have to hit extremely good percentiles. If you are open to non-IIMs, you could take a drop. However, since you are from COEP, and have good acads, I would advise you to target only the top 10-15. Be patient, you have time on your hands.

Nothing happens. Goes unnoticed most of the times. People are not bothered about what you have not done. Rather you get quizzed on what you have done. Hope that helps.

Allow me to give my 2 cents to this as i feel myself to be qualified enough to give some gyaan on this after facing interviews.
I passed out in 2011 and had got 2 on-campus offers(accenture and wipro) but owing to their late joinings(feb 2012),decided to search a job on my own.Got a decent enough job(in november) but with a bond amount of 2 lacs for 2 years.
Gave CAT,scored good,got calls from nearly every IIM and attended BIG4(A,B,C and L).
Now the situation was like i couldnt show them ma work-ex as was planning to break the bond.So i was considered as a year-drop.
And guess what in all the four interviews i was asked about the gap and i justified it to be my strongest point.In fact i wanted this question to be asked.
Told in all interviews the books i have read,abt Constitution of india,Indian history and how i have tried every bit to make myself a better person.They cross-questioned a lot upon these and i think i did well there.Now the final results will tell my fate and how they percieved it but they seemed more than happy with the varied knowledge i acquired over the past 8 months.
I know it will add a hole in my CV during summers/finals in IIM'S but i am trying to prepare myself for that by doing something related to CFA and finance.

Update-Have converted IIM-AHMEDABAD,IIM-C and IIM-L..So guys derive yr conclusions..its all upto u to take d call.

Well if you will be writing CAT, then forget about justifying yourself in the PI for now. Concentrate on the preparation of writing the CAT well. As simple as that.

Now if you are expecting calls, you have to justify your case. You should have solid reasons as to why you took the decision. You can always say you were inclined towards doing an MBA ( ok why the inclination, you have to justify that too ). And CAT was important to you and you were not able to devote enough time because of hectic work. So you had to take the tough decision of quitting. Believe me, if you do well in CAT, you can always justify your decision of quitting, because eventually, your decision to quit has paid off with a great percentile in CAT.... Its all about sounding convincing to the interview panel. Prepare the answers in front of the mirror....and speak confidently.

1. Somewhere in my heart...is buried a desire ....to get admitted into a world class institute ..to see what is so different about them.....could not do so at the Grad. level...so Post Grad is my last chance...

10-12 years down the line...I will be setting up my own firm...so why not learn some basic traits of business and get some managerial experience....A manager's perspective is a hell lot different from that of an Engineer...is not it?

I want to appear for CAT 2011 as well as GMAT (near future)...I would like to ask "the more enlightened fellows"...

Only you know what you can or cant do..... having a year or even two off is not end of the world. To prepare you need at least 2 months i would say if you know what cat is and have an overall idea about it.. but it depends form person to person and how much time or efficiency you have.

Give it a very serious thought though before making your decision. A rationale logical choice. Not a scared or a instinctive one.

if you are working for sometime and have savings.. take 2 year off.. travel the world for a year and then prepare for cat for another year.(IDEALISTIC)


Anyways the force is with you.

Fully agree with this view point. It is ok to take a year or two off for self introspection, travel or to explore one's true passion. You can spend they year travelling, reading or learning music or a sport or painting. But definitely not just for a stupid thing such as CAT. Even getting into IIM-A is not the end of everything. Even after that, you need to get through placements and a long career ahaead. And you will always repent wasting a good year just for CAT preperation. On the other hand, a year spend on things you really love to do along with a bit of CAT preperation on the sidelines is something you will cherish. But that needs great understading and support from family.

Hey twinkle, do not think otherwise if you have got a gut feeling that you can crack CAT by leaving your job.
Though it will be tough with the pressure of "no other option" if you do not clear CAT this time.
But even in worst case scenario, you do not loose everything..
I think 3 months are enough for CAT if you give serious 4 hours a day to it.
I dropped my job and gave CAT, but got only 94 in the first attempt..and believe me it was a very very tough time for me..I gave CAT again last year, and got 98.63 %ile...and now am in MDI, pretty happy...
So follow your intuition and get to work, all the best for your CAT !!!

I am a graduate from Delhi Universty in BA (H) economics(2011). I am in a big dilemma right now. I gave CAT 2010 but could manage only 44.7percentil and 42.3percentile in XAT. I scored 28.35 marks in IIFT. Unlike others, I decided not to give MAT thinking I should only aim towards the best B- schools.

Due to peer pressure and persuations by my family i gave MA Economics Entrances as well- DSE, JNU, etc. But couldnt qualify any of them. My final year exams were badly affected and scored an aggregate of 53.3%. Moreover, I was involved in many extra curricular activities throughout the three years of my college.

I am planning to drop a year for CAT 2011. Is it feasible to do this? I have been placed in Genpact as a financial data analyst. the joining date is sometime in the month of August. Should i join the company? I am afraid I wont be able to devote time for CAT preparation.

I got 52%tile in MH-CET'2011.
Now I am planning to give CAT'2011 and CET'2012. I hv joined coaching classes also.
But I came 2 knw from my frnds that it is not good to left d job bcoz CAT doesn't select such students who quit d job and do only studies.
I tried MH-CET'2011 along with the job. But couldn't do well as u knw it is very difficult 2 prepare along with job.
So thats y I left the job and started perparing for that.
But now I am in dilemma whether to study or search for a job as CAT prefers only working candidates.
I am thinking of joining BPO jobs for the time being.
I will not write the exam again ,if I don't clear it in this attempt bcoz of my personal reasons.
Is it Ok 2 quit d job and take a chance for one year.
Please guide me.

Hi Ashish,

as you have already quit the job so there is no point in worrying at this point of time. There are so many people who have made to top bschools even after quitting the job; now prepare with your full focus and manage a good score, about interview its 2nd stage of process u can think of it later and also you can get help form seniors in this regard. To get a job or not, ask your self whether u can manage the new job and also preparation together? if you think u can, then go ahead.

As you know CAT is very unpredictable so its very risky to just target few exam. There are so many good colleges that you can get in to through other exams like XAT,JMET etc. so maximize your chances by taking more exams.

buddy,

its not correct that cat only prefers working candidates,there are so many freshers who get in to top b-schools every year.
However the only criteria where working candidates get edge is that some b-schools give weightage to working experience,and in personal interview the questions may be based on work ex, instead of acads etc (dont be biased here, it depends)
It is your choice to make a decision on whether to join a job or not, however my personal opinion is to join a job and manage studies

I have always written the exams without much prep and percentile ranges in 95 -97 region... inorder to break into 99 above i feel i would need to put in some good effort which is why i thought of doing so... working and studying is too difficult since i hav to travel quite a bit meeting clients..

and ya getting sabbatical would be the best option but since i havent completed 1 yr as of now am not sure whether i will get such an option.. anyways its worth a try
wil probably think of resigning if it doesnt work out...

Is it possible to manage your studies on weekends, and if you don't have that, then I guess, its worth a shot taking an off. Also explore the possibility of getting a sabbatical from work and I would also suggest you to talk with some seniors who are already there in ABC (someone like prem ravi sir or nishantvdo should be able to help you out). Coz since you are already working in a Big 4 Consulting firm, its not worth it to study anywhere else (atleast thats my view).

Sorry i should hav rephrased better.. it was mostly cause of the nature of work i am havin right now... its kind of repetitive and not very interesting as i initially thought...

Almost similar reason to why I also quit my job for CAT. It was just one of the reasons and not the only reason, mind you.:)

One thing I would ask you is, will it be possible to manage CAT preps and your jobs together. If you can, take that, coz its the best option.

Now one more thing that you can do is talk with your seniors about your prospects of taking an MBA from there itself using the GMAT way. Enquire about which would be better to pursue from there, taking an MBA from right now, or to take an MBA from abroad, say 5 years from now.

Think about all possible ways to not quit and only if nothing goes well, then take the option of resignation.

Since you are already working with one of the major consulting giants (BIG 4!!!) and you are thinking of quitting because you are bored with your corporate life, you need to really evaluate why you want to do an MBA. The boredom associated with it won't be going even after an MBA, yes, your responsibilities, as Manjunath11 has pointed out, will increase.

One more thing, the major reason most guys are trying to get into MBA programme, esp from IIM A,B & C is to get into one of these Big 4 consultancies. So now that you want to quit this career, you need to first evaluate what you want to do, and will an MBA really help you in whatever career path you want?

had dropped in 2010, didn't take up an IT job (it was in chennai).. finally joined MIB (Delhi School Of Economics, DU)... i feel happy, reached where i wanted to be :D

the past 1 year had been sometimes fun, sometimes boring, and sometimes frustrating and uncertain
but hopefully things are looking good from here...

i never wanted to do an IT job, and wanted to skip that ladder

i am kind of bored with the hectic corporate life...
so planning on resignin coming month when i hav 1 yr exp and preparing for cat properly this yr....

do u feel its a good decision? ... would i be able to justify my reasons...

life after MBA is not a cake walk, as many Puys as already quoted MBA is not the end its the Beginning. as you have said you are bored of hectic corporate work; as you move up the corporate ladder work and responsibility both will increase drastically and no escape from that

Luckily, i understood it in my engineering entrance preps...I dropped for IIT JEE and wasted a year as could not perform well due to pressure of 1 year...
