How should I start?

As I earlier said I'm working in a small company and aspire to do an mba from a good school.
I'm in Delhi and haven't started on with real preparation. I hv an acc academic record
92% Icse 10th
78% cbse 12th
83% graduation
I believe i hv a decent command over english & maths. However from the CAT pt of view I think I have a long way to go.
Due to my job I don't get a lot of time to prepare, so I was thinking about getting into a coaching institute so as to get a direction for my preparation as well as to regularise my prep time. Please suggest what would be the best way to prepare.

Present pay scale??? It has no effect whatsoever on admission. If it would have been like that, freshers would never get admission.

i guess if you'd've got a mail or some online way of being informed that you have won the award , you can always take a printout of the same, provided your company is okay with it

We used to have these floor activities and competitions like singing, photography, bay decoration and such stuff. Then there was also some technical events for best practices etc. Then there were also some for best performer of the month/quarter, employee of the month/quarter/year etc.

You can include awards without certificates. Most of the times they do not check the certificates at all! In case if they check, if you can justify then its fine.

Winning awards in work means performance awards. Like in TCS we had awards like "Star of the Month", "On the spot award", etc. I am sure most companies will be having such awards to inspire employees to go the extra mile.

When you prepare your achievements under these headings you need to be very careful not to mention every little thing. You need to prioritize and mention the top 2-4 only. Moreover in many cases the space given will also be that much only. So if you have many Tokens/Certificates of appreciation/Kudos etc. in your work exp you can probably think of combining them into 1. For those with very less to put in I know this sounds bad, but then even if you have only 1-2 it doesn't matter. Its not always quantity that matters!!

Otherwise, I guess yes you can add those in co-curricular/extra-curricular (Even I'm not sure where to add them!!). And to add on to the list while working you can think of:
1. Doing some social work by associating with an NGO
2. Participate (and win) in some HR engagement activities at office
3. Do some certification (related to job you do or the area of intended specialization in MBA)
4. Participate in some quiz/paper presentation/other competitions for corporates (check dare2compete.com for events hosted by B-schools!!)

You're welcome. There are some quiz competitions and other events also occasionally which are open for corporates.

Yes, I understand one shouldn't mention every achievement and try to club them as much as feasible.

Working with an NGO or doing part-time certifications seems to be a feasible idea!

About the HR activities, they are occasional and doesn't earn me a certificate which can prove the achievement. So probably, they can't be used.

Also I'm into photography and travelling, but then there's no certification for that as well. Photography competitions, yes I'm trying!

He was quoting someone else's CAT scores and GD PI experience of not making it through IIM-A because of almost zero extra/co-curricular, and clarifying if it is possible like that! I think you probably read it wrong as his experience!

I'm abhinandan, passed out my BE (ECE) from LNCT Bhopal in 2011. I have been working with Infosys, since august 2011 and I have started preparing for CAT 2012 from past week. I find Weak in PnC Probability and Set Theory. I have not joined any coaching as my work schedule is a bit hectic...I need Pointers on how to strengthen those topics in quant..any suggestions on good books or websites will be appreciated.

Nopes,but a little homework can help you "making up" your passion.And they are also humans.If you leave a company and go to other offering double salary,the hr will ask why you wana join this.You reply with all those intrest and passion stuff.And the hr will listen to that patiently.He also knows that if he would be offering you less than previous company,all your "passion" will blow away.Thats the world.

MBA may not be a one stop solution,but some sort of accelerator.As far as passion is concerned,I wonder if 95%of Indian kids are really passionate about physics/chem/maths/ .its just the fame/money and the elite label of iit.

Dude..first of all you don't need to use such contrasting & large fonts to ask something. It is considered rude and shouting!! There are so many people here who will answer & help you out even if you write in normal simple font!!

Anyways, coming to your query. Not all institutes charge 15lakhs fees. There are places where it is less also. FMS, IIT's etc. being a few. The highest is in fact 14lakhs or so for IIM-A (There's ISB above it but then its admissions is through GMAT). Also if you're looking at MBA just as a boost to your salary part then you may want to look at ivy league institutes like IIM's, FMS, XLRI, MDI, NITIE only. At Tier-II institutes or below only few get to see packages of 11-12lakhs+ (Irrespective of the fact that many institutes quote their average package as 10lakhs, 11lakhs etc.!!).

Can anyone tell me the conversion/mapping of marks against percentile in last years CAT exam? like total marks 180 somebody got 120 marks and 99.03 percentile.

Even such a nice profile with best PI can be rejected? That much of importance is given to co-curricular/Extra-curricular activities? All IIMs follow this, if not which IIMs give more preference to co-curricular/Extra-curricular activities?

Its not too much of importance, but then they will look for something other than studies. Like we've heard, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So the admissions committee would like to find people who can think out of the book (or box!!) also and for that they look at the extra curricular or co-curricular activities. Just theory or bookish knowledge won't help. There is no pre-defined level you need to have, but then a decent amount of participation/accolades in other activities is sought.

As per what this guy has said, his extra/co curricular is almost nil so that became a negative in his otherwise awesome profile.

My profile was completely pedestrian and for people who face similar problems, I can only say be prepared. I found it very tough. My best was at IIMA but since my profile sheet was blank(3 curric, extra-curric, co-curric achievements needed), I think I got the boot. My poor profile was balanced to some extent by my high score. So think about this before starting your preparation because the interview is as important if not more as your written part and there will be no time to think of all this after the results.

All the B-schools dont charge 15L as fees. Eg: FMS,IIM-L have quite low fees.

Also, most important thing you need to think of first is that you have to clear the exam before thinking of what you will say in the interview.

If you think you cannot prepare well in present situation then you have to change it even if explaining it is diffficult - because if you dont do well in the exam you might not be get chance to explain at all.

Look @ this in an another way - Ek se bhale DO! Meaning if you appear for CAT'12 & GMAT & you score 99.70% & 702 respectively, while applying for Executive MBA @ IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS other B-Schools your CAT score will get you more calls then your GMAT score but had you given only GMAT you've to wait for next season.

Yeah GMAT is quite different as compared to CAT, but always look at both sides of every coin. So I would suggest go for boh & your best score of two is considered for admissions, calls. You got nothing to LOSE!

As Abhi said it Mocks are the best way to analyse your progress towards the Ultimate CAT, to judge your strengths & weaknesses.

If you still feel that you only want to solve 1 section to judge your strengths, weakness & for practice reasons then check this website wherein you can give Mocks for a particular section & even for a particular topic e.g., Parajumbles only, RC, Geometry etc.

Looks like GMAT is a better option when compared eith CAT, XAT etc when it comes to executive mba.

Any suggestions please.

Hey Buddy,

Well CAT prep along with job is a dautning task but you got to take it. I work for 10 hrs + 2 hrs of travelling, so, i use 2 hrs of travelling for my CAT prep.

Some of the books that you can refer to for basics:

For Quant. QA by Arun Sharma, NCERT books for Class IX,X,XI, QA by Nishit Sinha etc.
For DI/LR. refer to DI/LR by Arun Sharma
For VA. refer to Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis, GMAT SC Guide, Wren & Martin for Grammar etc.

Buddy first , get this myth out of your mind that there is a syllabus that you need to complete before you start giving mocks .. Mocks are an excellent opportunity to judge your strengths and weaknesses

Give mocks and analyze them well and also do one thing while solving questions time yourself

As Abhi said it Mocks are the best way to analyse your progress towards the Ultimate CAT, to judge your strengths & weaknesses.

If you still feel that you only want to solve 1 section to judge your strengths, weakness & for practice reasons then check this website wherein you can give Mocks for a particular section & even for a particular topic e.g., Parajumbles only, RC, Geometry etc.

Hey all..I have one small dilemma...I have planned to first finish all my studying stuff and then i will i dedicate my whole time in solving past papers n past yrs mock. I now practice from books & TIME study material. I sometime strongly want to solve sectional mock coz i am not so comfortable in VA till now :(. So should i solve QA portion of mock or wait to finish my course and then take mocks in 1 sitting?

If anyone has past TIME sectional mock test paper plz reply. I wl PM u me id. Puys your opinion on this?

FYI, i am not giving CAT this year, coz i am in my first year of work after qualifying CA ,in first attempt throughout, and am one of the rare 9pc of CAs who qualified this time, who got job offers during campus placement. (didn't want to brag; but u were trying to portray me as a maniac:wow:).

I will give CAT next year. As for myself, i would be left in lurch as my grads wont meet the criteria (plz search for a CA, who has got 80pc during CA final exams)......

As for the original source,,,, all i can tell u is that he is in 2nd year @iim-a; and didn't get anywhere near 80pc in his Class X exams. But he got into merit lists in Class XII, grads and all other exams which he gave.
Any more info, will help the officials zero onto him, which might lead to some problems for him.

The criteria is for iim-a admissions only, and not for other iim(s)......

dont know who's spreading all this fake info..
maybe some 80+(acads) guy, who knows mugging up wont help him crack the cat...
so he's tryin to demotivate others...

What do they mean "IIM-A doesn't trust the outcome of CATs since it went online."??? They are the one who opted for it, then how come they wont trust that????

Expecting everyone to score above 80+ in 10th/12th is quite insane, let alone in grads..Only God should help us...

I will NOT give the name of the guy, who told me this, coz he is in 2nd year of his PG diploma there. Regarding, unreliability of CAT, you can urself check from the case of the DOctor from FMS(article is in PG, who scored 100percentile in CAT11; but didn't do as well the year before.

Quite a fact, that the source of this info, is one of a kind, who didn't get 75+ in Class X exams; but got into merit lists in Class XII,grads,etc.....


I just hope that this thing doesn't get executed, coz it's hard for a guy to get even 70% in BCOMAF from IGNOU(ek bande ka naam dedo bass jisne 70+ laaya ho).
