I'm sorry sir but I'd like to disagree with you on this statement.
Yes many people make it to C (I know for sure about C) with a break in job, but having a break has certain disadvantages-
1) The risk is pretty high. What if God forbid that one day (on CAT)you don't perform to your potential or normalization goes against you? Searching for a job after such a long break will be really painful.
2) I personally don't think CAT demands 24 hours preparation like some other entrance examinations (e.g civil services entrance ). You can prepare along with job. Don't be a star performer in office for some time. Just stick to your job, study in day and night, sleep less, go out a little bit less. Take leaves if situation demands.
3) You'll ruin your career if CAT does not work out. I'm not being a pessimistic but am being realistic.
4)It certainly is a big disadvantage in interviews. Why ruin your chances to get into a good B-school after getting such a hard earned interview call?
5)It'll haunt you in summers and finals inside b-school.I'm not saying you're destroyed for eternity, but certainly your profile will be seriously weakened.
This is strictly my opinion and might not hold true for everybody. So please take a call based on what you feel will work best for you.
Best of luck.
I agree with you on many points and what you say is right.
It must be a difference of opinion.
I dont diagree to the fact that there are a lot of students who make it to the IIMs who are still working. And working helps to build your profile. So definitely if it is possible to crack the exam while you are working, one should do so. Also if one leaves the job without any backup plans it could lead to unncessary stress levels during the exam and lower ones performance.
I only advise those students for whom it is difficult to study due to overload of work. I had a student who had to travel 3 hours from work to back. Her working hours were obnoxious. She left the job 2 months before the exam, managed to convert all the calls that she had including the IIM calls and today she has got a good job in campus.
About summers and finals, what counts is your attitude rather than your break in job. A student of mine in IIM B had a break for 1 year, whch he took to study for CAT. He got a summers in London in one of the top banks.
Top jobs last year in JB - McKinsey, Olywer Wyman, etc were bagged by students who had a break in their profile of 6 months to 1 year.
I have had umpteen examples of students who got into IIMs and other top colleges with a break and also did well with their placements.
In life you need to take risk somewhere. Being a safe player throughout will land you nowhere.
But leaving job is not an easy decision. It will be based on the fact as to what level your preparation is, how good is your job, would you be able to get a job after the break. Also the break ideally should not be for long.
Ensure that while giving the exam you have a back up plan, else you will be stressed out during the interview.
