Since I screwed up my CAT horribly this year, I plan on converting and joining IIFT or NMIMS this year and give CAT again next year. Will it hamper my chances of getting into an IIM next year provided I clear the cutoff? I really don't want to spend another year at home

First of all I've taken CAT'11...but lookin at results I am 99% certain of a retake...

1.I'm from Hyderabad, had joined T.I.M.E.( Infact goin der for GD/PI now..)..I believe I need class room coaching to keep me in the loop....could seniors suggest whether it's good to go to CL/IMS (elsewhere?) for variety or Redo T.I.M.E...or is it better to omit it altogether since am retaking
2.Well hypothetically August'10(was goin 2 cls n comin home..no work) but in reality around July '11
3.Books I have (T.I.M.E material, TF material plan on buying CL n quite a few test series)
4. 2-3 in the beginning (4-6+ after coll's over) and about (8-10 in last one n half month...actually I want to avoid this altogether )
5.Strong-QA Eccentric-English(Excellent to moderate depending on attempts) BAD- (DI/LR)
6.IIMs,XL,FMS,SP,MDI,IMT,NM(only mumbai),IIFT

MDI and FMS could be the options u are looking for(although FMS may change the criteria this year) but keep ur hopes high

Hi Chaitanya. A friend of mine had 21 backlogs but his score of 97%ile and a good show in GD and PI got him thru to Nirma Institute of Management and ur scores are better than his so there is no reason why u shudnt get thru to a good college provided u bel the CAT. All the best:)

and since we will be giving exam in 7th sem and result will come in 8th sem .... how will they calculate graduation %age...

I assume u are a fresher...well then u will have to keep ur GPA high in the next sem itself because the IIM's will consider ur GPA till the 6th sem only.And many of them need above 60 percent.

P.S.-I haven't really started with the preparation in the real sense..just li'l bit..so To start with,I wish to enquire how are you guys starting with preparation,as in managing time..how many hours per day to you intend to give?

My two cents, Plan your prep in such a way so that you are not exhausted at the end. Do a Di set everyday and quant basics. At this juncture you should be cool with your prep not stressed out. About VA the only prep you need to do is Read Read and Read.

CAT is about basics and implementation. Best of luck

I will give out my plan.It may not suit you.Still....

Finish the basic of QA,VA(especially vocab),DI/LR in a span of 3-4 months and then go for exhaustive mocks.During the building of basics,don't worry if you don't do well in the mocks.It requires sometime and practice to get oneself acquainted with the mock test taking techniques.All the best

Dont worry u have a lot of time for the next year.Let me assure u that even 4 months of solid preparation is enough to get through cat if ur basics are good.Yes u are right,first cover all the topics given in ur materials serially,read the theory solve more and more questions.After u have covered evry topic go and give some mocks.there is no better way to analyse ur weaknesses and strengths.Take the mocks very seriously and analyse them properly.dont worry if ur scores are a bit low initialy for their only purpose is to guide ur preparation(i started with 60 percentile ended up at 99);get back if any specific help is required

The time material will be enough for quant/DI/LR section and go for arun sharma books for verbal.Read the above post and proceed,but remember u may have a better formulae that may work 4 u(for eg,if u feel u are fairly comfortable with the syllabus u can try giving some mocks first to see how u go and then take it from there)

A very valuable tip:make sure u build up towards cat steadily.its very important to peak at the time of the cat.Make sure that u enjoy the time preparing for cat and not get bored with it after a few months such that ur energy is fizzled out by the time cat arrives

That is entirely ur take...if u think u are good in both maths and english and can manage on ur own( i din't take single class) then by all means don't.Take the material of some coaching institutes ,join time/ims/cl mocks and give them in all seriousness(analysins where u go wrong very seriously).Buy a arun sharma book for english and u are good to go.
However if u are not comforatble with either of these two thwn join the classes as u can gain some valuable tips on solving difeerent kinds of problems based on all topics.So consider the time u can devote to it and make the decision accordingly.

As far as FMS is considered, this year they will consider CAT scores so at what score they will give the call is still has to get uncovered. Further next year whether they will consider CAT score or conduct their own exam is something not known at all. So my sincere suggestion is not to look at the min percentile and all but give ur best to get the most u can because u really cant figure out the entire selection procedure this early for this year. :)

2. It completely depends on u. No body knows u better than u urself. I would suggest you to go through with some last few years CAT and XAT (especially) papers. It will give you an insight into the level of toughness and the extent u are comfortable with that difficulty level. If you are comfortable enough than sincere and smart study will do that work. Further TIME material and Test series - AIMCAT is amazing. Once u get thorough wid basics, AIMCATs is what all needed then. Its not that difficult at all once u get into it completely and take it as a challenge and njoy it.

Thanks for ur suggestion kritix. However, I am still looking for answer for my Qs. I m doubtful about CMAT though. It doesnt even tell which all colleges will accept it.
