Hey there, i'm pursuing my BE (comp) from Pune university, and am in my third year....my aggregate so far is 60% (yeah, PU barely gives marks :\)...i'm thinking of studying for CAT for a year and then taking the exam.

do 10th, 12th and engineering marks come into consideration for admissions to FMS, IITB and IITd?

Ur cgpa till the third year will be considered(if u apply next year).U should give ur all for this next sem.But dont be too dissapointed.U still have a decent chance if u score highly in CAT.Do not worry about what woulkd be a decent CGPA now.Try and ddo ur best and maximise ur score.

I have a query on similar grounds though not entirely..There was this discussion on one of the threads about the ambiguity related to percentage conversion from c.g.p.a for different colleges.I want to ask what does someone appearing first time for CAT(while still being in college i.e in his 4th year) do if his college doesn't have a percentage conversion rule -simply multiply the c.g.p.a by 10 or are there other methods,plz clarify.Also on a separate topic ,while going through this thread I have noticed a vast difference of opinion in predicting percentiles.I know the exercise is futile,impossible etc. etc but the other day I noticed someone predicting a 95% corresponding to a score of 95 while the same score got a 85% from another senior.I know we should not worry much before the results come out but an honest estimation keeping in mind this year's trends doesn't hurt either.

I was carefully observing the last date of form submission for various MBA colleges such as NIRMA.
See all of them have last submission date before 11th January 2012 so that many of those friends who're actually gonna get 96+%il also buy these forms as backup because they don't know their result!

If we had Jan MBA-pal, he'd take cognizance of this unethical behavior and demand these univ. to start their form filling and submission process only after 11th January 2012.

Well friend I totally empathize with you. This MBA colleges are minting way too much money through forms, someone should file a PIL for it. Perhaps we need an Jan MBA-pal bill to deal with this form-nuisance. Sorry I've no experience to tell anything about cut-offs. If you were a student of some coaching class, I suggest you interact with their faculty and get some one-on-one feedback about what you should do next. You good luck.

guyz m in same state...just want result now...my foot was on accelerator till cat2011,after that just moving like that with no energy,...snap disappointed me wid 94.5,....just want cat result to be declared,,,that was my first attempt of any mba xam,...fed up filling forms,DD,bank,courier...hhhhaaaaaaahhhh..

Hi... this may look very silly but is important to me. I tend to take a lot of rough space in solving the problems. So, i would like to know, how many rough sheets are we provided with in the CAT.
I have been hearing all sorts of answers - '1 sheet, 2 sheets, 4 sheets, an entire booklet' but nothing for sure yet. So, i would request someone who had taken the CAT in 2011 to clear this query correctly.
Also, I am a bit uncomfortable using a pencil. Are we allowed to use a pen ? If not, do we get a pencil sharpner ?

In CAT 2011 we were given a booklet which consisted 8 pages (including front and back). Apart from the rough sheets you would be provided with 2 pencils and an eraser (no sharpener). You could ask for an extra pencil but sharpener would not be provided.

Waiting is the best thing that can happen.It tells u what u r really made up of.Forget what happens now coz u can't do anything about that.If u gave ur best relax,if u have'nt then prepare well for others.It teaches u patience and it tests ur ability to move on to other more important things.Coz really needs to be stressed that CAT is not the end.I myself was pretty drained ater CAT but nevertheless have picked up steam now for XAT.

Well thats the reason i stressed that this scores are just an indicator.If ur accuracy is good enough(say 85-90) and u score a raw score in this range then u gotta damn good chance.However if ur accuracy is not good then u need to keep ur fingers crossed as anything can happen.It also depends on the slot which u gave the exam in.For example a raw score of 95 maybe good enough for above 97percentile if ur accuracy is good.
I would also like to add that all the people who have attempted less questions should not worry too much seeing the exorbitant no. of attempts that other people have posted.U can get a very good percentile with even 35 solid attempts.All the best

I am a woking prof wid 1yr xperience(as of now) in IT industry..wanna crack CAT-2012.I have already given CAT-2010 but was well short of IIM's.(%ile of 91):-(:-(
I want an advice form you folks regarding an issue.

Is it better to join an institute ya prepare on my own to crack CAT-2012???(i have already attended TIME during my prep 4 2010.)
With all the material and a regular study of 2hrs a day...wuld it suffice??

Well look it all depends on you...if u really need special attention to any weak area that u might have then u can go for coaching and all.
But lemme give a personal opinion...u do not need any coaching and studying 2 hours is more than enough(although increase the TIME as the CAT nears).But u have to be smart in ur preparation.The most important thing is to peak at the right time.Make sure u are at ur optimum when the CAT 2012 comes around(This is a big factoir in performing well).Even 3-4 months of solid preparation is good enough.But make sure u do not lose steam when the CAT nears.
Also concentrate on the basics of every topic.Take every mock related to CAT very seriously(and i say this from personal experience).be very hard on urself and take every mock as a real CAT.This will help u in getting used to the real thing.

First timer? We oldies have written CAT so many times now that we don't care about the result any more.

Valid point...with the IIT's,FMS jumping into the CAT bandwagon ..it's a whole new ballgame now...u made a very good point about increasing the pool of GD/PI which may or may not materialise given that there are only so many people a institute can handle at a time!!!But yes this could be a factor ...
Best advice..score as much as u can in CAT...the final conversion never was and never will be easy...

As a matter of fact, last year for many IIMs the the number of people called for GD : number of seats was approx 8.5:1 or more ...May be this year they(IIM+IIT+FMS) might call in a large number of people for those number of seats..

There are two positives in this scheme of things :
1) Many colleges (IIMS specifically) increase the number of seats over the years, so you have a higher chance of getting selected

2) Dont see the call : seat ratio.... Just see that there are x ( Lets say 300 seats) and you require just one of those 300 to get in..!!

I just feel that the number of calls being given for GD/PI may be greater than last few years. I believe that generally the ratio of people called to total seats is more or less 5:1. It may be increased this time around.
To explain my point further, I'd like to take up an example where in IIT D keeps a cut off of, say 97 %ile and for NITIE it be 97.5, now both B-Schools would be, more or less, calling the same people and hence the waitlist movement predictions become more difficult.
I used to believe that no institute wants to compromise on the quality of students it has been giving calls to. It still remains. But with the greater number of calls being given out GD/PI would become even tougher to crack.
I know reduction in cut offs has been discussed before also but I just thought this logic had not been discussed.

though this was my first attempt of cat,so i cant say whether it was easy or what,but i have talked to so many guys those who have multiple attempts under their belt,one of them told me -har bar sabhi yehi kehte hai bhut easy paper aaya tha aur maine itna kiya,wo acctually me ek do easy questions se pure paper ko judge kr lete hai.(and you wont find them wen results are declared)
i felt that he was quite right..lets see how result justifies that..

I guess u are right...but its difficult to compare papers across years...I have come acroos sites which have stated that the paper was a touch harder than 2010 paper.But then that maybe beacause of their personal opinion and the slot which they got.Its extremely hard to compare yaar.And one more thing..aisa to hai nai ki agar bahut aasan paper hua to cutoff achanak se 130 pahuch jaega..thoda bahut hi increase ya decrease hoga.But anyway what we can do is prepare for other exams ..u never know with this normalization.
Although i have lost it after CAT(i gave it my everything) as i am very drained.so trying hard to again peak at the right time for other exams...all the best to all of u...

i think they do conduct.....but they just cant manage by conducting gd/pi only on sat nd sun....so u should be prepared to take leave. At least A,B,C made sure that u dont have to travel alot by conducting the process in consecutive days for the candidates common in their lists. I guess it is easy to get leave at a stretch instead of multiple times and this initiative by A,B nd C is helpful to some extent...
