guys mes a mechie engg. working as an Industrial engg. i wanna do an MBA either in Operations or General Management....apart from IIMs, NITIE, IITSOM, SPjain, etc are there any other b schools that u know that have a good operations course.

I have a small query which I wanted to discuss with work ex guys,

this will be my third attempt at CAT didnt manage anything except an odd XLRI call which I couldnt convert.

Just wanted to know what are the good options available for doing MBA in part time in Top schools. Only two names suggest itself, PGDBM at IIMC and Exec PGP at XLRI Any of you guys having details on other top institutes conducting similar MBA programs for work ex people , in which I would have to spend one/two monthss at the institute, and rest of the year can continue to work.

Here I am with 1.3 Years of work ex as of now in an IT company located at chennai. I went through all the messages posted in this thread. Seems everyone facing similar kind of problems with Time Management. Hope we would be able to work out this problem successfully.

Now there is one question I'd like to put before our group with their experience in the IT company. Does this experience count to get job in other sectors like FMCG, finance etc ( i don't have much idea ) or simply it is supposed that a guy with 2+ Yrs Software exp is best suited for the Management Jobs in IT company.

Right now I'm a bit lucky for i dont have that much work pressure as now i'm in the support team and work load in not that much. So I'm trying to catch up as much as I can for from October I would be in a new project and there would be very less time. What I feel is that even though there is work load one can find time after the office hrs like 8 to 11 or whatever it suits.2-3 hrs a day should be a good amt of time that can be put in weekdays.

this is the main problem that we all are facing....
there is no time for us to prepare for the CAT exam.....

the only solution that we can end up is to utilize the weekends to the max of our ability....
try to put in atleast 1 hr during the weekdays.....weekends...well its up to what extent u can go...

this should to an extent solve the problem that u are facing....

Do the IIMs consider GMAT scores? I am in Indian - but not in India right now and for the same reason may not even be able to attempt CAT. I have a GMAT of 770 and 2 years work ex currently. By End of year, i will 29 months of work ex and by start of acad year - 35 months.

Can anyone throw light on this and abt the procedures involved for the same? Also, will the fees be in INR or $?

have a look at all the iim websites. they have profiles for all their current batches. the good thing is, i believe someone with 3 yr ex. and a centile of 97.4 got a call from imA. that wont happen with a freshie!

ive been working in kolkata for the last 2 yrs. gave cat last yr and managed 97% but no iim calls. had a bm call from xlri and managed 2 convert but decided to give abc one more shot and gave that up. it's quite difficult preparing while working at a software job - trust me !! but then we have to manage with that constraint. lets have an action plan with which we can prepare for cat WHILE working hard!

do yu knoe that the current batch at B only has 6 people with work ex. of more than 2 yr. what does that say about oldies like us. they main emphasis is obviously on the cat scre and nothing else. the rest counts (obviously) only if u somehow make it through the first round!

what about work ex of 9 to 10 months? does it add any value?

d00ds ... after just working for a week i am harboring thots of doing a PT (Part time) coz there seems to b no time left whtsoever to study... I work for a core engg. firm and travelling to factory to n fro takes 3.5 - 4 hrs... plus the greulling hrs 8 to 5 is taking a heavy toll.... am totally pooped at the end of the day and have to turn in early...and cannot even read while travelling by the darned bus so studying is out...

have joined time series .... am trying to get QA practice twice a week ... also DI ... coz these are places where i usually bomb.

me too in IT for last 11 months.i know its quite tuf for us to take out studying hours in a weekday and weekends go away in attending classes.it has been happenning with me for some time now. but if u manage well then u cud take out atleast 2 hrs on weekdays and pull it thru on weekends. but i still haven't acheived this target.

Well I have been seeing the posts in this thread for quite some time and hope to give some add ons from my side too. My posts from here on will be regular. I gave cat last time but got 93% tile. Verbal ate me up volumes. Got calls from NM and XIMB but no converts. Passed out as mech. Engineer this year and will be joining ICICI by the end of this month in their Six sigma and finance division. Took up this job which is more on the MBA aspect so that it helps me in my GD/PI rounds if I happen to make thro written. well I feel editorial, word list, tables are must in a day. over a period time you will see a large scale improvement. if you dont have time for magazines and your BP goes up seeing them piling up then better go for Competetion success.it will help you a lot in GK and the topics in that magazine are much more precise and to the point. Unlike these other BW and India today which have interviews and are blotted cover to cover with ads. This is my opinion after been a regular subscriber of BW and Ind.. Today for more than 18 months. Recently tried out competition success and felt it to be much better. And I have solved IMS BRMs last time as I had gone to their classroom program and to be true their material is quite outdated.so I tried out the CF quant material this time and found it to be better and it has the latest type of problems, so you can try it out. Time is close to CF.i am planning to do my basics from CF and sections from IMS and CF .I have lot of time papers with me so will practice full lengths from them.hope I can keep my enthu and tempo till the next 15-18 weeks which will be after I go to work. Moreover, as others have suggested its better to wind up your basics within this month if not by 15th for late risers and go on to sections by the next month. this will help you to do well in your weekly mocks and after some time doing full lengths and sections simultaneously will help you increase your score gradually. well this is not the golden rule for everyone but has worked out with many of my friends who made thro thee top grade B-schools. And finally I feel Time mocks are best because their quant levels will keep you abreast with higher levels because its normally quant where you dont cleat the cut offs in CAT.i am not going for any coaching this time but will be joining time mocks. bye and all the best till my next post.

Working with a software firm for over 9 months, same plight as of yours. Not able to find much time for my preparation. Could spend only 1-1.5 hr earlier. (This includes newpaper reading, magazines, brusing of concpts in quants, wordlists). As days progressed i reduced the time reaidng newspapers at home. I read them at office at tiffin time/ lunch time/ snacks time. My lunch these days have become a bit longer but at the end of the day i am able to go thru the editorials of ET&Hindu; completely.
This is a way of finding time for urselves.

well seems that we all are travelling in the same boat man....
job does take away the bulk of ones time and energy...... how far can a car run when there is no pertrol in the tank...
this the plight of us.... get up early in the morning... get ready and commute through the mumbai traffic ( guys living in mumbai can understand what i mean)....reach office....work work work for the next 9-11 hrs...that too infront of the moniter.....reach home by 9.....with ur eyes dying for a nap....

this is what is happening with us...but krain....i dont think that we can change this routine....all we can do is somehow manage our time in a proper way...
one very imp thing is that we need to make our weekends count....
48 hrs is good amount of time...proper planning for the weekends should help us...

I agree what NEHA has said... 1 hr during the weekdays may also be enough.... but in that case we need to work a lot during the weekend....

Well all the best to everyone out here...the road ahead is tough....but hope that we have the resolve and strength to find a way through it....

at this point i remember a famous quote (sorry do not remember the writer) which goes something like this "do not follow the road that already exists but make a road for urself...for now ur success is no longer determined by the road already present"

Its nice to c ppl pourin out their experiences which go a long way in getting an insight into the total process..I wud tend to agree with most of the ppl with respect to the prep ... me 2 puttin around 1 hr on weekdays and around 2 hrs on weekends.. tryin to do some DI sets ..think m good at verbal so not touchin anythin.. as for quant i want to do it after DI... my bro in iim tells me that if u pick up the sitters ur thru(with a high level of accuracy).agree with Neha on that count... tryin to read Eco-times daily along with the Hindu editorials... BW on weekends... think the mocks are the most important barometers... apply a strategy and stick to it thru all tests... ur thru....

Well guys wanted some clarifications... heard from a frnd that sometimes work-ex of more than 3.5-4 yrs doesn't prove to be very attractive for the selection panel... wud like to get the views/facts abt this thing...

wud like ppl to continue pitchin in with their istyle of prep.

My story is already repeated by a few other people in the group. 2 times failure in CAT. First attempt in 2001 and then the last one.

Same hectic work schedule in Infy. Was wondering, that when our PM's can manage to get us do some 'bullshit'(they call it defect prevention, audits etc etc) with 8 hours of daily billing and leave office by 1800 hrs everyday, why can't we apply some of the same principles on ourselves!!

To me, time management is the mantra. I am able to give 2 hrs approx daily towards 'the cause'. And weekends are all mine.

Just started with CAT prep this month :)........At max am putting in just abt 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day.........Need to increase that fast ..On the reading front my newspaper reading has taken a beating.........Just the front page of the Business Line and sometimes the excellent Edit Pages( Much Much Better than Eco Times ) and sometimes when I feel like it pick up a copy of the Business world ........Considering it's a weekly it's much easier to get through

On the Papers front.........Thinking about joining the Time Aim Cat's and the IMS Sim's later on...Besides have the CL material from last time......Me have a severe weakness in Quant and need to brush up on the basics on that front...........On VA & DI front Practice is the most important factor

Anywayz hope to stick to a proper schedule and Crack the CAT this time

With work gobbling up the cream of the day(almost 10+ hours in office & 2 hours of travelling) am left with just 12 remaining hours.....subtract from that the slumber hour (say 7)...the balance 5 hours have to be apportioned to family,CAT , friends , normal distractions(drooping while studying,cell calls,bell at the door...), unpredictable events & oneself in the order of Priority

And assuming one devotes 2 hours to sundries, u one has just 3 hours for CAT..which means that in those 3 hrs one is required to study,read the newspaper, read a business magazine(cant do this while travelling in Mumbai local trains),take tests,analyse them,revise the basics, wordlist, tables......!!!! Here I assume that in those three hours you are as active as in your Boss' presence!!!

The result for me: I have not read the newspaper for the past one week and the magazines have started to pile up, have left the word list and tables half way and with the TIME CATs having started most of the days are used up in Analysis ...

Is something faulty with my planning & preparation or is this the same case everywhere?

Hi krain, felt the same a few weeks back. work is hectic, and life even more. Then just to kickstart prep gave 4 original CAT papers in 2 weeks. That was enough to wake me up from my slumber. Not that the scores were bad, but just got me excited enough to start solving more.
I am not doing basics, reading, etc.... Dont think they help that much in CAT, as I have realised tat even with concepts I cannot solve CAT questions, and even without concepts, I can solve many questions. So just counting on answering a whole lot of questions, which is more fun, and does not require structured time table style prep.
Will be joining MoCATs and Advanced course at Career Avenues from this weekend. That should keep me motivated and hopefully shoudl learn some concepts which i would have taken ages to learn by myself.
Reading - well just my normal mags and novels, and daily news, no heavy stuff yet. Manage to do this just before sleeping for about 30 minutes.
That is how I am doing CAT prep, 1 hr on weekdays (max) and 2-3 hrs on weekends max.

I am going to take the IMS test series and my friend is gonna take TIME. after the test we shall swap..

I cudn't but agree with u... these ppl need to evolve some kinda system wherein proper weightage is given to ppl with work-ex... what i feel is subjects like "strategy" n all don't mean much until u hv been involved in such things... so work-ex shud be a must... now cumin to the prep part.. i think inspite of the hurdles we encounter we shud still b wise enough to actually put that analytical mind of ours into designin a proper prep strategy.. if we can trouble-shoot seemingly big problems at the office-front, why can't we do the same here... i mean its 'coz of lack of committment as far as i feel... we need to have a proper timetable , stick to it and have a serious go at the mock-cats coz if u can be consistently in the top 1-2 percentile , u shud be rest assured that ur thru with 3-4 calls.i personally feel u shud have a strong area where u score the bulk(atleast 30) and then the rest if u cross the cut-offs and get a decent percentile , ur thru.. by now we might have known what our strong areas are... We shud be workin on our weak areas and use the mocks' as an indicator of our progress...

work X without a degree from Prem B school has a saturation pt...after a certain level.But,being a grad from a prem B school always gives dat xtra levearage in terms of career...However being a professional U can get d same monetary advantage in terms of sal....whether U come out of a B school after work x or continue with ur present job 4 those 2 precious yrs....
