All this talk about "new IIMs will be at par wid others in a few yrs time" may not actually turn out to be true!
Shillong wid 4 yrs of operation, still is not prefered by most, and the biggest disadvantg wid it is its location. Some of the new IIMs suffer from the same location menace.
Yes I do agree that the tag will help the IIMs post impressive figures year after year, and probably it wont have to slog for yrs to get in the top 20 bracket like the MDIs and SIBMs had to, but assumin thaat they would beat MDI or a NITIE or a FMS in 4 yrs or for that matter even 10 yrs, is pure speculation.
I mean logically speaking why do u think that just a tag can propel u to a top 10 slot? The tag will help, but if poor faculty remain an issue the the tag can only tug u:)
However having said all this, IIM K presents a perfect example of where the IIM tag coupled wid good faculty and really hard working students have made the difference. I have friends in both K and A, both complain of workload bt the K guy has an additional point of complaint, he says that ppl here are made to slog harder bcs they want to prove that they are as good as the older IIMs.
All in all, a IIM brand has its advantages, but assuming that the tag may overcome a brand like MDI wtht proper direction is baseless
some other reputed colleges started new campuses in cities like nagpur, hyd, bbsr, kolkata.. now you can compare the response they have recd with the interest generated by these new iims, and you will find the effect of brand power!
iim shillong may not be easily preferred today over some other top 10 colleges, but it surely is giving tough competition - people having common converts are going either way. with just 3 batches placed, it has no reason to be the preferred college. a few even leave iima for isb, nd some leave iiml for fms.. visit their fb page, and ull see that the converts are most happy to join and the waitlisted are equally eager to get converted! iim shillong is using its location to start a china specific business programme, how many colleges could think like that? and the companies recruiting from there are top notch too.. opening an iim in shillong serves some other purposes too.. i guess its the only premier institute apart from iit ghy to have a presence in the entire north east.
talking about location, iimc, iit k, iit kgp are in miserable locations.. maybe roorke and ghy too. but they are world famous and most sought after in india! compared to them, only iim kashipur is in a slightly remote area. rest are easily accessible. given some time, they will bcm equally formidable institutions as other pvt colleges are now.
and where did anyone say that new iims will 'beat' mdi and all.. honestly, how is it possible that a new college can 'beat' 30 or 50 odd years of heritage? but in terms of preference and popularity, they will surely match up. just look at the starts they have got. 100% placements in good companies for the first batch. were these established colleges able to boast something of this sort in their initial years.. dont think so. so i dont think these instis are going haywire from here onwards. the only way they are going to go is up! and talking about colleges, can iim abc 'beat' harvard or stanford?
faculty is an issue that wont take much time to get sorted out. they already have permanent faculty and the visiting faculty is best in the country. they take full courses and not just guest lectures. as their reputation grows, good faculty will come to stay. will take some time though as teachers also need a good quality of life for which facilities are being built.
