do anyone has any idea about the govt. of india guideliness about withdrawing of fees. As per IIM-U , you can withdraw your admission as per GOI guideliness. Not very sure what is the time frame for that . IIM-Rp is giving 20 days to withdraw the offer. So I shall assume that this can be the GOI gudeliness but not very sure . please share if you any idea about this.

comparing colleges is mostly done by aspirants and we don't blame them for that. once you become a part of the system you get to know of so many hitherto unknown facts. The college that you are so gung ho about was left by few of us and we don't regret that decision. Also if it seems to you that all is hunky dory at a college just bcoz it manages to rank very high up the ladder , get some facts about the IIM with a huge batch size in the central part of the country

a word of advice - go and use your time in getting some sleep before you start the dreaded pgp-1 at WIMWI . we have had enuf of your bakaar here and we don't need it anymore. :nono:

How many seats are there ?
When is the session gonna start ?

Dude my essay of a post (if only i worked so hard in WAC) was just to explain the "murky" concept of visiting and permanent faculty. Yes i agree that a permanent faculty is better than a visiting one, but not because of logistics problem. the reason will become clear to you after 20th June (going by last year)
and thanks for sizing the range of my knowledge but you exaggerate . i assure you it is far from truckload. it is just a wee bit more than a person who is yet to join the system and does not have any friend who is a part of it.

I am just unclear about the concept of IIM U beating other non iim college of repute or vice versa. what is exactly meant by beating? If you mean attracting better candidates then the number of people in a dilemma as to which one to join indicates that probably the competition is good. If you mean better placements then yes the first summer placement report of IIM U is obviously not as good as MDI's 50th is. If you mean rankings in the magazines then i cannot say anything . If you mean quality of faculty go through my essay again.

dude no institute can work on the tag alone & be successful and no senior from any of the new IIMs can ever say this. Obviously delhi abhi door hai. But what i maintain is that it is wrong to imply that those who had left MDI/NITIE/IIFT to join a new IIM did not do the right thing. These are fantastic institutions with rich heritages and shall always be. But these guys had a certain vision and felt it was right for them.

And again kindly explain what you mean by babysit? No other institute played a role in the faculty or the placement that IIM U had, and i think it is the same case in other new IIMs.

2. Is the learning centered around books, theory and writing exams?

1. Currently none of the new IIM's have their own campus.IIm Udaipur also is operating from a temporary campus.All the basic facilities are there for daily operations.The premenant campus will come up in 3,4 yrs.

2. The learning is centrd aroung case studies, class participation, quizzes,..apart from books (of course).Academics are a top priority for all the IIM's.

3. Apart from theoretical knowledge, IIM U has a lot to offer.It has a mentorship programme,unique among the 6 new IIM's, where you are tagged with an IIM A,B,C alum who is in da industry for 10-12 yrs.He will guide you throughout your 2 yrs journey and mayb after dat also,depending on your initiative.
Also it has a global immersion programme as elective where in the 2nd yr where you get to work in live business setting in foreign envioronment.
This yr 15 students r going to bangkok and 15 to dubai.
Also It has a Rural immersion programme where you work closely with an NGO, and understand the problems of Rasjasthans village,and mayb provide insights that may help.

4.The hostels are not air conditiond. The only new iim to have air conditiond hostels is IIM Raipur, bcoz of the super high temperatures in raipur.

Well we as students never understood the so called logistics problems. i don't know how clear your understanding of visting faculty is but let me tell you how it works( since for you the process is murky). I am sure you will see the concept is similar in WIMWI when you finally join.
the visiting faculty comes every week or evry two weeks (depending on the course), takes his/her regular classes, stays with us if classes are scheduled over 2-3 days and is available over e-mail in case a student has some doubt when the teacher is not in the town.
The admin ensures that the routine of classes is never ever skewed. on a particular day there may be two classes by two permanent faculties and one by a visiting, or vice versa. Often it is difficult to distinguish which one is permanent or which one is temporary (unless you google the person's name and see that he is ex PGP admin IIMB,program manager IIMA, General Manager SEBI , PGP Chair IIMC or GGM Punj Lloyd, or someone like prof G.S. Gupta who retired from IIM A a year or two back after teaching there for more than three decades, in fact he was one of the faculty members wooed to join IIM A by Professor Ravi Mathai himself ) If teachers of these stature, teach in a routine which is followed in any other IIM, the difference between permanent and visitng faculties become almost nil.
These will become much clear to you when you start your classes. You will see that in some cases you will have to depend upon your TA more than your prof (even though he maybe a permanent one). So right now the things that you have "figured out" by simply going through the website may turn out to be quite different after the first class of FRA (if Prof M.S. Sriram takes it who afaik does not take first year classes anywhere other than U) :)

Got a mail today, converted from w/l no. 386. It says that have to send DD of 50k before 7th June to confirm acceptance. Question is, other new IIMs are supposed to come out with further lists after 7th. If I get another call and decide to join the latter, how to go about cancellation procedure? Or once an offer is accepted, it can't be cancelled? Will any part of DD amount be refunded?

IIM I released its 2nd list after 3rd list of IIM U. and there was a huge movement in all cateogries. so i expected a huge waitlist movement in IIM U too. but u never know.

Mere dost, comparison of institutes is strictly againsr PG rules and cannot be done :nono:.
What you can do is talk to the seniors of both T and U about their opinion about the positives and negatives of their respective institutes and then make the choice yourself.

I m not sure how JOKA is in a miserable location bro, kolkata may nt be doing well bt still fact remains it is a metro and will therefore never be at a location disadvantage.

See I never said that the brand power is useless, wat I objected too was some ppl saying ki 5 yrs down the line an MDI will be nowhere compared to a new IIM(and trust me ppl have made the exact same statement), I mean how can u even believe that??
As u correctly pointed out the brand power will help them wid good starts. and that is a a point I have agreed upon too, but assuming they wd be preffered over a FMS or a NITIE within 5 yrs just on the basis of their brand power is baselss. U say that they have got good starts, if u read my post u will find I reiterated the same point, but if they dont start improving on every parameter, then situation is not gonna be the same.
Yes if they continue the good work, coupled wid good faculty(which v frankly it does not have rgt now), then and only then will they be in top 10.

Also u just pointed out the good things abt Shillong, u probably need to look at the other side too. It is a prime case where location has played a bigger role than the brand per se. Wouldnt like to comment further on this issue since I hvae no idea watsover of their faculty.

I have personally left IIM I and K for FMS.

I agree IIM has a brand value, but FMS is also a brand in itself...it has 60 years behind it.

and moreover few years down the line rather than the brand your own hard work and intellectual would matter the most.

Accomodation not problem for boys i guess u must have got a hostel/PG or travelling everyday from home.Leaving FMS for new IIM's is a silly decision.But safety also matters in a place like delhi

FMS is good for everything. I took coaching in TIME institute. there was a teacher from IIM B. even he used to say that FMS is the best institute. FMS was a dream college for him. FMS is far better than new IIMs in every respect. Intake is low, location is the best, ROI is the best, actually everything is the best. all i can say that go for it.

We only ask about which college & not abt his year of passing out.. The same applies to BITS pilani guy as well as an IITian.. Every established college is a brand by itself...

2) the sole criterion in deciding a college is... why exactly I'm doing MBA?? It all depends on
a) whether I'm doing for an IIM Tag
b) whether for immediate placement in a good company with a good package, or
c) whether my goal is to achieve something in long term!!




According to me, we cannot & cannot generalize .. It all depends on the individual & he has to choose a college with its vision & mission in sync with that of his goals :):)

It is not the intention of seniors to 'intentionally misguide" aspirants. We can only say from our personal experience. I was one of the few idiots who took an new IIM over a highly reputed non iim college , but then i personally do not regret this decision because i got to intern in a company that took students only from IIMs (including the old ones)...but then there may have been others who may have regretted their decisions. Amongst the current students there are others who have left other good colleges like IIFT, NITIE etc ( Again i believe an equal number of cases exist the other way round. Its about personal choice)
Moreover the kind of opportunity in store for us like International Business Practices, Exchange program, Trading Lab(which only IIM C has afaik) , Analytics Lab etc, only shows us that probably we were right somewhere in "our" decisions, that we took for "ourselves". As to the advice given by the faculties at TIME, CL etc, i am sure these are just personal opinions . because there are other CL, IMS teachers in other cities who have asked (and even felicitated )students to join new IIMs :-)

Wat complled me to post in this thread was the statement by some batchmates and seniors that
"colleges like NITIE nd MDI will be nowhere as compared to new IIMs withing 5-6 yrs". I did not agree with that and hence put my point.

Trust me i do not have an affinity for a anon IIM college, I myself now belong to the IIM brand, but I was only disturbed at some statements and hence made my point.

well if people have made such a statement, its irrational. popularity is in its place but alumni base, campus life, corporate network are also factors. new iims have a bright future, but others will definitely not fade out. wrong to think like that. at least on this thread no one mentioned that new iims will beat old colleges, hence i pointed that out.

y i call kolkata a miserable location is bcoz despite being a metro, there is only one co.- ITC, that probably places iim graduates in this city, am not sure about that too.. so no locational advantage in terms of industry. hence, connectivity is the only plus point this city can offer, nothing else. and the road to joka from the airport will make you want to take a flight back rather than visit the campus ;)

i am optimistic about their faculty strength improving in the near future.. most colleges already have permanent faculty who have graduated from good colleges themselves and have been a part of the industry, its on their websites. that makes me think that the faculty problem will be sorted out soon bcoz just like the iim brand is a lure for students, it could be the same for teachers too... will take time. no two ways about that. and am not complaining, they have just started out

iim shillong may not be easily preferred today over some other top 10 colleges, but it surely is giving tough competition - people having common converts are going either way. with just 3 batches placed, it has no reason to be the preferred college. a few even leave iima for isb, nd some leave iiml for fms.. visit their fb page, and ull see that the converts are most happy to join and the waitlisted are equally eager to get converted! iim shillong is using its location to start a china specific business programme, how many colleges could think like that? and the companies recruiting from there are top notch too.. opening an iim in shillong serves some other purposes too.. i guess its the only premier institute apart from iit ghy to have a presence in the entire north east.

talking about location, iimc, iit k, iit kgp are in miserable locations.. maybe roorke and ghy too. but they are world famous and most sought after in india! compared to them, only iim kashipur is in a slightly remote area. rest are easily accessible. given some time, they will bcm equally formidable institutions as other pvt colleges are now.

and where did anyone say that new iims will 'beat' mdi and all.. honestly, how is it possible that a new college can 'beat' 30 or 50 odd years of heritage? but in terms of preference and popularity, they will surely match up. just look at the starts they have got. 100% placements in good companies for the first batch. were these established colleges able to boast something of this sort in their initial years.. dont think so. so i dont think these instis are going haywire from here onwards. the only way they are going to go is up! and talking about colleges, can iim abc 'beat' harvard or stanford?

Shillong wid 4 yrs of operation, still is not prefered by most, and the biggest disadvantg wid it is its location. Some of the new IIMs suffer from the same location menace.

Almost all faculty of IMS, TIME and CL are advising to choose MDI over new iims. Some other non-iim colleges r also better than new iims.

It is not the intention of seniors to 'intentionally misguide" aspirants. We can only say from our personal experience. I was one of the few idiots who took an new IIM over a highly reputed non iim college , but then i personally do not regret this decision because i got to intern in a company that took students only from IIMs (including the old ones)...but then there may have been others who may have regretted their decisions. Amongst the current students there are others who have left other good colleges like IIFT, NITIE etc ( Again i believe an equal number of cases exist the other way round. Its about personal choice)
Moreover the kind of opportunity in store for us like International Business Practices, Exchange program, Trading Lab(which only IIM C has afaik) , Analytics Lab etc, only shows us that probably we were right somewhere in "our" decisions, that we took for "ourselves". As to the advice given by the faculties at TIME, CL etc, i am sure these are just personal opinions . because there are other CL, IMS teachers in other cities who have asked (and even felicitated )students to join new IIMs

boss its obvious that new iims are not better than mdi and all.. how can they be? they are just one year old! but they have the potential to come at par in a relatively short period of time. none of the seniors said chose iimu over mdi, they are just giving advantages of their college, the disadvantages are known to all.. if a college is nt wrth joining, the real news always spills out.. u can check so many forums of colleges here.. some forums have been dirtied by seniors themselves, but some others are really informative.

at the end of the day its a personal decision and when one is ready to accept the challenges, that just makes life more interesting. dusnt it?

For a person who wants the best of buildings... I*I*P*M is a better place. People who go to IIMs, go for the learning environment they provide. As long as there is a campus, why do you care if it is a temporary campus or permanent? If all the required facilities are present, how does it matter?
