Before PI kicked off, panel asked few questions on job, family background, and academics..

S: Introduce yourself briefly
R: Introduced myself with acad followed by personal and family background and work ex respectively

S: What are your hobbies ?
R: Watching and Playing cricket and analyzing and investing in equity and derivative market.

S: I think one cannot invest in Derivative Market without minimum net worth stipulated by law !
R: Sir, there is no such minimum income level required to invest in Indian Derivative Market (F&O;).

S: I think that minimum net worth is required !
R: No sir. As per recent SEBI guidelines, we need to disclose our income. If we are not disclosing, then need to have minimum Rs 10000 deposit in demat linked bank account.

S: Okay.. there are lot size i think in future and options ! So it must be costly
R: Yes sir, we can trade only lot size and value of lot size in Indian Market is around Rs 3 lac, but we need to pay only around 15% ie Rs 45,000. Therefore, its very risky because we are getting exposure to 3 lac with just 45K.

S: Fine.. Which stocks do you invest and why ?
R: I responded from two perspective: Equity and Derivative. For derivative, I refer technical analysis and for equity I look at fundamentals of the company. Explained a bit more with various factors.

S: For equity, which factors you look at ?
R: PE ratio mainly and also earning potential in future. I also go a step forward and look at management of the company.

S: What PE ratio u think is attractive ?
R: I said it depends on sectors and it is adjusted acording to future earnings. gave example.

S: For a company PE ratio is 18. Will you trade ? Is it attractive ?
R: It depends on future earning. For bajaj Financial service, PE ratio is more than 200. but still people are trading. explained a bit more.

S: Where Indian market will go in future ?
R: It is trading at 15 times FY12 earning now, which is quite attractive. But again it depends on global market and crude price as well.

S: What factors you look at macro level to invest in share market ?
R: GDP, fiscal deficit, inflation, political stability. Since India is politically stable, it was trading higher in recent past.

S: What factors you look at micro level ?
R: PE ratio of company as well as sector. And how the sector is performing and going to form. Also some other ratios such as acid test ratio...

S: Acid test ratio !! whats that
R: Its the ratio of current assets to current liabilities. It indicates the ability of company to pay immediate obligations.

S: Which sector is going to do well and why ?
R: Real Estate and Capital goods. Explained with examples and reasons.

S: How banking will do ?
R: It will do well. I could say banking and economy go hand in hand. When economy do well, there must be liquidity in the economy and bank also do well at the same time. Gave some more funda...

S: How much profit or loss you have made ?
R: blah blah...again in equity and derivate separately

S: Whats ur portfolio constitutes ?
R: Again blah blah...

M: What is statistics ?
R: I replied in layman terms. I was not exactly knew the book definition.

S: What is LIBOR ?
R: Something related to debt market of London.

S: Debt instrument or rate ?
R: I am not sure. I think its a debt instrument...

S: What is money market ?
R: Interbank lending for very short term such as few days. Then I said LIBOR is a rate and not an instrument.

A: Again didn't remember the exact year. But gave a time period.Which was correct, but that doesn't count, I guess

By this time, P1 enters and starts going through my file

P1: I had a business plan presentation, certificate in my file. So he asked me, about the financial things to be taken care of while starting a business
A: I used some terms like ROI, Break-even point and capital investment. So the next few questions were on this.

P1: How much should be the ROI of an ideal business?
A: I made a really wild guess and ended up quoting a large percentage figure, which made him disagree.

P1: How much is the ROI for an average investor in Indian stock markets?
A: I quoted the returns of a mutual fund. Which he said were again large, but somewhat possible.

P1: What is capital intensive business?
A: Funde

At this he indicated to P2 to grill me on acads

P2: What's the distinguishing feature of a communication satellite?
A: Funde but he wasn't convinced

P2: Which company has the largest sea cable network?
A: AT&T;, which he agreed with thankfully

Me: Explained how we're also impacted.Took example of ICICI bank.In 2009 there were rumours of ICICI bank ATM's running out of cash.Explained the concept of bank run and how it evokes fear in the minds of public.And how finance minister and RBI came in defence of ICICI.Tried to explain how central banks perform an inflationary kind of banking and how it leads to recessions.
P1:See you have read something unique and it shows that you've knowledge.But you haven't gone through other theories.You tend to form very strong opinion by reading just one book.You need to have a holistic approach here because economics is a vast subject.And I must tell you whatever book you read the arguments will appear very convincing.
Me: Sir I accept I dont have the complete knowledge of the subject.That is one of the reasons to go for an MBA course.
P1:You're mistaken.That kind of stuff is not taught in a B-school.And then the 2 profs started laughing.

We were divided into 6 groups (panels) each consisting of 7-8 candidates for GDs/PIs. I was in panel 5 with 6 others (including a guy whom I had met at my coaching classes. A tough, talkative nut to crack watever be the GD topic.). We were led to one of the posh hotel rooms. 2 small tables joined together and 7 chairs fairly close to each other (and some light music would have made it perfect) was the GD site. But first the essay writing

We were alloted about 15 minutes for it (L showing that they were far more generous than the others.). The topic - " All Government instituitons should come in the purview of RTI."
A good topic and a far cry from the not-so-ideal GD of 'C'. There was lots to write on - the RTI, its uses so far, examples, recent facts & figures, good points, flipsides etc. The script was well-reasoned out, structured & concluded well.
A word of advice - please be aware of recent happenings and develop opinions on it.
Watch loads of talk shows,debates, discussions - it helps bigtime.

Most of us finished within the stipulated time (for want of more space to write. The guy beside me had increased his font-size deliberately.). Our papers were then taken away. The panel of 2 men instructed us to start our discussion saying we had 10.5 minutes for the same (7*1.5 = 10.5 min. Got the logic?). They then pretended to read through our 'essays'.

The GD kicked off on a brisk note as the spectacled guy opposite me spoke without interruption for half a minute till we thought it was time to cut him off and I managed to enter it. I managed to enter 3 more times. Everyone got an oppotunity to talk & most importantly be heard.
The points were pretty much the same as the ones put on paper. I spoke on RTI activism, the real estate mafia, politician-bureaucrat-biz nexus, RTI in defence deals & mining etc, the flipsides, media attention etc. At the end of the 10.5 munutes, we exited the room, a satisfied lot.
We were called for our turns for our interviews and as expected I was the last one.
All 6 panels had their interviews simultaneously in addition to the IIM B interviews which were also held in the same floor in opposite rooms. When you have the top 100-200 brightest minds of the country together within a few square metres, it is hard to miss the competitive streak and an air of anxiety is always prevalent.

My turn finally did arrive after what seemed an eternity of wait outside the same room in which we had our GD session. (They deliberately did that i guess).

P1: (the khadoos guy), P2 : (relatively cool).I sensed a stress-session there in the offing and i guessed it right!!

P1: Come in, why are you waiting outside. We were wasting time inside
waiting for you.
Me: (Not my problem)Sir, I thought it appropriate to wait till u called me.

P1: Sit down, you dont expect us to ask you questions standing, do u?
Me: sat down

P1: (Not looking at me. He dint 70% of the time ,to unsettle me)Tell us about urself.
Me: (perfect poetry - blah blah1, blah2 etc)

I hand over the originals/certificates to P1. P1 & P2 divide it among themselves as if it were the 'prashad' offered in temple.

P1: (Pissed at not being able to find a fault in my 10th, 12th & grad marks started examining the quality of my trancript, quite deliberately) So where is the original for ur transcript?
Me: Sir , what u r holding is the original transcript of my marks.

P1: What??? (Stunned expression on his face, as if I had told him my favourite hobby was watcing porn) You call this a transcript and u call urself an engineer.
(Turns to P2) Looks at this piece of paper. They call it an original these days it seems. imagine how worse a photocopy wud be (Hearty laugh all around. Hearty laugh changes to a disgusted expression and shake of the head.)

P1: You have a lot of work to do. My advice to u is go and get this laminated properly and only then attend future interviews.understood?

(Ya right, it was just torn a bit at 1-2 places which had obviosuly not missed his eye. He was making a mountain of a mole-hill. I sat expressionless and nodded my head).

P2: You say u hav completed B.Tech. what is so great about B.E/B.Tech? what is the difference between degree & diploma?
Me: (Ragging chalu) ..Sir , B.tech is composed of balh, blah.. ( happily cut off by the ever-khadoos P1).


P1: You have done B.tech in NIT Trichy.
Me : yes sir.

P1: So u will go to IIM Trichy?
Me: Yes sir.

P1: and IIM A?
Me: Yes sir.

P1: Stop confusing us. Do u want IIM Trichy or A? Dont change ur answers at will.
Me: I would A over Trichy.

P1: So u have done B.tech in metallurgy...(cut off by P2)
Me: Yes sir

P2: What is the latest in metallurgy these days?
Me: Rattled off the names of a few processes & benefits in the industry.

P2: (Still obsessed with my marksheets)..See this marksheet specifies marks. You must have a certificate which specifies whether u have flunked or passed?
Me: (What the?) Sir, the marksheet satisfies both requirements. Pls have a closer look (He did and ruefully admitted he was wrong.)

P1: (Purposely singling out a subject in the 6th sem in which I got a D)What is High speed steel?
Me: Told what it is, its uses.

P1: What are its benefits?
Me: Clung on to my 6th sem basics and formed the answer well.

(P1 nodded in appreciation.)

P1: Do u know the inventor of this?
Me: No sir.

P1: Think. He is one connected with 'scientific management'.
Me: Cant recall the name, Sir.

P2: (Feeling left out)I see u have also studied Economics in ur graduation (As if I had a choice then).
Me: Yes sir, i did.

P2: What do u remember? Do u remember anything?
Me: Yes sir (rattled off names/terms/terminologies like 'bandwagon effect','demand-supply' curve,elasticity of demand, 4P's of marketing, Some smith etc.

P2: What is on X-axis of demand-supply curve?
Me: Dont remember ir.

P2: Y-axis?
Me: Dont know sir.

P1: You said adam smith. When did he live?
Me: Sir, 16th century.

P1: He wrote a book. what was it called? (argh..can v just move on)
Me: I remember he wrote book. Cant seem to recollect its name.

P2: At least he remembers Adam smith ( and both have a laugh. I join in)

P2: So wat is ur job about. explain it to us?
Me: Told about it for a few minutes.

P1: So,wat is standardisation?
Me: Explained it to them with the help of an example in automobile part. Told them the benefits of it.

P1: (nodding his head) good. So which is a most recent & visual exampls of standardisation in auto industry?
Me: (thought for while)..Sir, its K-series engines in Maruti (explained about maruti's platform and multiple launches in short ime).

P1: do u know wat is simplification?
Me: no sir. Not heard of it.

P1: do u have any hobbies/interests?
Me: Yes sir reading & blogging.

P1: So u write your own blogs and you are forced to read them urself only. ( Turns to P2. Roaring laughter all around.)
Me: (smiling) Sir, i have got enough readership base for my blogs.

P2: What do u read?
Me: Fiction. Political-fiction.

P2: Which language?
Me: English

P1: What about Tamil? you know to read it?
Me: Yes sir I can read & write

P2: So u read tamil novels also?
ME: No sir, not novels. But i read the smaller sections/captions/sign boards in tamil.

P1:(turning to P2) Most of them dont even know to read their mother-tongue well. Its a pity. (yeah..say that while staying in Mumbai)

P1: Do u read Jeffrey Archer?
Me: No i dont.

P1: Why?
Me: Coz, I find it boring.

P1: (turns to P2 who by now seems to be having a ball of a time)These guys specify reading but say they dont like Archer. What a shame, these people.
Me: (Nothing but a stifled smile)

P2: what books & author?
Me: Named a few

P1: Is the protagonist same or different for all Dan Brown novels?
Me: Sir, for "Da Vinci code" and "Angels & Demons" it is the same.

P1: What is his name?
Me: Robert Langdon.

P2: (cuts off P1 and his questioning spree)..Did u watch the movie or u stick only to books and more books?
Me: Sir i did watch the movie.

P1: What did u like? book or movie and why?
Me: Sir , the book. Becoz while watching the movie you only have to watch what is shown or pojected to u. In a book, u can analyze and make mental pictures of characters as per ypur convenienc and thought.

Both seemed satisfied with the answer. A few more questions followed on it which I reasoned out well. Some more banter and laughter.

P2: You have fileld up PGP-abm profile also.
Me: Yes sir. But its a 2nd choice

P1: Whatever it is. At the end of it, its a choice and u filled it. There is no escape.
Me: Yes sir.

P2: So tell me..why do u want to do abm?
Me: (fumbled at the start but then picked up after a few seconds of thought. Talked abt M&m;, farm equipment, initiatives for productivity,mechanization, farm advicing etc and so my interest.)

P2: what is the initiatives taken by m&m; called?
Me: Shubhlabh. (Explained what they do like seed distribution, supporting irrigation, soil testing etc.)

P1: Have u been to a village?
ME: Not exactly village. but my engg college was in the country-side far frm city.
(Both giggle over my answer.)

P1: have u been to a village farm?
Me: Yes Sir.

P2: Have u seen people farming?
Me: Yes sir. But not from very close quarters.

P2: So from where do u see farming? Using binocolurs?? (Both have a laugh and i join in with a smile)

P1 & P@ look at each done with a " I am done" expression.
"Thank you" They said in a chorus, I reciprocated and walked out of yet another gruelling session.

had my 'L' interview on 2nd March, Hotel Monarch Luxor ( used to see this hotel from outside..but now got a valid reason to enter inside.. haha..)

Essay n GD topic:- Taboos and Traditions are apart of cultural baggage.
absolutely no time to settle after entering the room..
fill the essay form details n then start.. finish the essay n then GD start..
no fish market.. most of us spoke well..

Interview:- Sir 1(S1)- young fella... Sir 2(S2)- very strict with killing looks

I was the last to enter the room.. 8th member.. had to wait almost 3 hours for my first ever IIM Interview..

S1 - very long wait .. isnt it ?
Me- Yes Sir.. long one for my first interview..
S2 - sometimes being last adds to your advantage..
Me- blank face.. staring at him...
S2 - Dont u think so ??
Me- Sir, its both an advantage n disadvantage..
S2 - I see.. how is it disadvantage ??.. you get to know what topics are asked etc..
Me- Yes Sir, in that way its an advantage.. but sometimes you might loose concentration, which is not good..

i told S1 that i work for retail clients...he asks me whats 4PL ?
Me- no Sir.. no idea..
S1 - heard of 3PL ?..
Me - yes Sir.. third Party Logistics..
S1- then what is 4PL ?

(dumbest answer which the panel might have heard till date..)
S1- smiles a bit .. ofcourse it is..but what is it ?..how it works..

S2- but i have seen many people with this certification..

S2 - so what.. the candidate before u had 93..
Me - blank face.. (what else can i do ??..wonder why that candidate came before me..)
now i dragged the topic to stock markets..had a disc about it for few mins.. was feeling good at this point.. but i was stammering a lot.. could not frame proper sentences..

suddenly.. S2 - OK..
S1 - OK..
Me - (wht the hell.. nothiing was asked at all..)
S2 - we are done with the interview..
Me- ok Sir.. thank you..
(I was waiting for them to ask me to take a toffee.. but they didnt even offer one..but still wanted to take one.. haha..)

Overall exp :- panel was completely exhausted by the time my turn came.. so they were completely informal in asking questions..spoke casually..with some killing looks in between..
.. seems like they already selected few candidates before me.. and were not much interested in me..
i answered almost all the questions.. and was honest in telling 'I'm not aware' when i didnt know a topic..but face a lot of problem because of my occasional stammering..
but i am sure that the panel already decided upon certain candidates before me.. hence such a casual interview..

Hi Seniors,

WAT: I can not asses my essay may be my grmmar and spelling had errors
coz I had to rush n complete but as I am slow I guess I did hardy wrte
some 200-250 wrds.
GD: Over all GD was not a fish market one and I did add a couple of
points which were different. in the end I was also the time keeper.
Interview: went fine, I could see no disappointment on interviewers
faces though I could not ans a couple of questions out of a bunch. It
was all about my BTech : pharma companies, drug trials and BT Brinjal.
It over all went kool, so much so tht in the end, I held out m hand to hav a handshake n left.

At one moment I ifelt Im selected but then I remmbered that
couple of who went before me also said interview was chilled out.

Now I am wondering wat could the kool interview mean ?

Can you please with your previous exp tel me how can we asses our performance ?

(Before starting I would like to let you know it was a stress interview in all the ways you see it)
1. What is your job profile? Before I could finish it the other interviewer asks me "Where are your salary slips?" And the next few minutes went with them ragging me around with "You cannot read instructions well. You have come here thinking that you are already through and not to give an interview. You come off as presumptuous"
2. You are a Chemical Engineer, then answer something about chemistry? Reply-I can try but Chemical Engineering is different from Chemistry. How is it different? Explained that but then they said "You just don't want to answer Chemistry so you are giving us a vague reason". Reply-I can try Sir. "Now we don't want to ask".
3. What do you do in spare time? Reply-Novels. Last three novels? How many novels are in Harry Potter Series and name them? Compare Mahabharata and Harry Potter?
Came back again on absence of Salary slips.Used it to ping on my extracurricular certificates which were made in February on request to Dean of Student Affairs.
4. How do you grow yourself? Reply-Reading novels, newspaper, journals. Keeping informed.
5. How many people work under you? If someone has made the same mistake, what would you have done? Reply - It would certainly have not made a good impression, but being his first mistake I would have made him realize that and made sure that he does not repeat it again.
6. How many centuries has Sachin scored?
7. You come off as a veteran of many interviews. How many calls have you got?
In the end I asked them if I should arrange the salary slips. "You have lost your chance. We will mention it to Admissions Office in bold letters that you did not follow the instructions well." The other interviewer asked "Why could you not arrange?"

I spent 5 minutes noting various points on a scrap piece of paper, and thinking about a structure for my essay. I spent the next 10 minutes writing the essay.

It was a reasonably good GD. I entered multiple times. Good group. No fish market Almost everyone contributed and made valid points.

My impression is that the panelists form an initial impression of the candidates in the GD itself (in any given GD. I had appeared for MDI last year). This impression carries over to the interview (as the same panelists are present both in the GD and the interview). So, my advice is that a good GD is very important in forming a favourable first impression.
I do not remember the exact sequence of questions in the interview. The interview was reasonably casual. They asked me about my native place, about Kurukshetra and Pune, compare and contrast the same. They grilled me on PGP vs ABM, on how I fit into an ABM (I had said PGP is my first choice, and it was obvious, but they grilled me more on ABM, especially P1.). This was somewhat tricky and I tried to navigate the minefields to the best of my ability.
They were going through my profile and noted both the good things and the bad things about my profile. They said that my salary was low for someone with my experience. They were quite impressed with my chess-related accomplishments.
There were hardly any GK questions, Electronics based questions etc. Overall, my feeling was that they were studying me/my profile, noting my strengths and weaknesses, and assessing my suitability for the program.
VERDICT : What is to happen will happen. The result is not within my control, so I'll just let go.

Me : (Made something on my own) He told me that coming to IIML was like going to hell.. IIM's r so much different from other insti's in terms of the huge workload, like all the quizzes, submissions, etc.. which make u like a MANIAC.. that u face a lot of hardships at first, but u get used to it after a while..

P1 : Did he tell u how to counter all dis huge academic pressure?
Me : Yes, Sir.. He told me that students in IIML study till 3-4 am in the night.. Sir, thats why I hv also started studying till late 3-4 am in the morning..

P1(impressed) : So, following the life of an IIMian already, huh.. But, u must be having college in the morning..
Me : Sir, I'm a 2010 passout & hv a 1 yr drop aftr that.. So, no college now for me..

Me : Sir, I used to study till max. 1-1:30 am in the night..

Me: I was in R C Patel School in Borivali and completed my SSC in the year 2001.

P1: You stay in Borivali?
Me: Yes sir. Then i joined a diploma course in S B M Polytechnic. It was a 4 yrs course with a one year internship integrated in the same.

P2: Why did it take 4 yrs for your 12th?
Me: Sir, as i told i did not go for 12th but did a 4 yr Diploma course in Digital Electronics from S B M Polytechnic in Vile Parle which is equivalent to 12th. On the completion of the course i got admission in K J Somaiya COE.

P1: Was it because you did the diploma? I mean there are several colleges which give you admission in the Degree course if you've done the diploma from the same right?
Me: No sir, we have a centralised procedure for admission where after the completion of the diploma one needs to apply for admission in the Degree colleges. Based on the score one has in the Diploma, they get admission to the concerned colleges. I got my admission in K J Somaiya COE through this process. I completed my Graduation in the year 2008 and have been working with TCS since then.

P2: So it was 3 yrs?
Me: No i have been with TCS for 2 yrs and 3 months as of now.

P2: No, I am asking about the degree course.
Me: Yes sir, after completing the diploma, we get a direct admission into the 2nd year of engineering.

P2: Its mathematics that you'll lose out on right?
Me: No, I wouldn't say that. Its just that in Diploma, we have mathematics only in the first 2 years and then no maths for the next 2 yrs. This gap is probably why some of the diploma students do not do good in maths. But i feel personally, i did good in mathematics.

P2: OK. So tell me something about your extra curricular activities.
Me: I was the Cultural Secretary for S B M Polytechnic and handled the various inter college events. I was also the PRO in IETE at Somaiya COE.

P2: What are your Hobbies?
Me: I like playing chess, reading Novels.

P2: Which novels?
Me: I like Harry Potter, LOTR, Bartaemius Trilogy, Inheritance Series, Novels by Dan Brown and other such fictional novels.

P2: You don't read Gujarati Novels?
Me: No. I haven't read any till date.

Became a bit nervous as I was replying I dont know to half the questions. Was asked full form of BEST, about the number of people that travel in a

Surprisingly, out of 10 people in the group, only 5 showed up! This made the GD flow much smoother, because the time allocated was reduced proportionately (Time for GD = 1.5 minutes x Number of Candidates)
No fishmarket at all.

I loved the fact that IIML gives you 15 minutes to write an essay on the same topic, prior to the GD. This leads to a better GD because you generate so many points and can think more about the issue.

The essay is supposed to be written on a piece of paper ruled on both sides. Bring your own pen without fail. We asked for and got rough paper (hotel stationery) to jot down notes while writing the essay, and were allowed to keep those notes to help during the GD. I finished the essay really fast, and spent some time creating GD points on my rough paper.

One strange thing was that they gave no warning when the 15 minutes were going to be up, they directly asked us to "stop writing". Don't count on them for a one minute warning.

The GD started pretty nicely with the 5 participants speaking in linear order for two rounds, after which we had some individuals shine, especially one person due to a location advantage at the centre of the table.

I got in second, and made four entries with fairly good content; one point I made even had 3 participants nodding in agreement.

Since generally GD is my weak point, I am glad about the way my IIML GD went.

L: Please tell us about yourself.
Me: Answered, showcasing my entrepreneurial venture details.

G: Extra Curricular Certificates?
Me: Most of my extra curriculars don't have formal certificates :P
(Missed a chance to elaborate about some other interesting stuff I did, but since we were talking about my venture, I thought they'd ask about extra currics later. They didn't.)
L: So you studied mechanical engineering but now are in IT?
G: When I was young I liked tinkering with mechanical objects, liked aeroplanes.. so I joined Mechanical Engg. But it didn't work out. I even had a drop year in which I worked at a call center. At this time I discovered my love for computers. In the same year I started writing my software and even started selling it online in the middle of my final year.
L: So yours is a sole proprietorship?
Me: Yes it is. I thought of registering as a Pvt Ltd but didn't require it, and also wanted to avoid getting unnecessary legal obligations. I had to incorporate an LLC in the US a year ago.
L: What is the difference between Proprietorship and Pvt. Ltd.?
Me: Mostly in legal compliance, Pvt Ltds require a lot more legal compliance. They have more rules, like having Directors, shares, paid-up capital etc.
( what a dumb answer that was. I was answering in terms of why I went for a Proprietorship instead of a Pvt Ltd.)
L: So do you have sales tax records?
Me: (weakly) No, we entirely sell online products to non-Indian customers
L: You file IT returns, yes?
Me: Yes, I do, but IT returns don't accurately depict our sales; here I can show you some bank credit notes regarding the inward remittances I received towards sales.
L: Show me the IT returns
Me: I'm sorry I don't have them with me at the moment..
L: (Silence)
G: So which was your favourite subject during engineering?
Me: (Umm..) Engineering Graphics. I even topped my college in the subject.
G: So how much did you score?
Me: I don't remember, it was long ago and there was no formal award
G: You topped but still don't remember? How many mathematics subjects did you study during engineering?
Me: Three
G: Which ones?
Me: Just called Engineering Mathematics I, II and III
G: What did you study in Engg Mathematics III?
Me: I don't recollect, it was eight years ago! I'm not in touch with Quantitative subjects. In fact if accepted at a B-school I plan to take some short courses in Quant and Finance before joining.
G: Did you study Management related subjects?
Me: yes, Industrial management
G: What did you study in there?
Me: (Thinking) Mostly related to management from a Mechanical Engg perspective.
G: Any topics?
Me: Time and Motion study, Utilization of machines etc.
G: How would you start a time and motion study of me?
Me: I'd start by recording your movements with a camera

Me: That was how I'd start. Then I'd convert your movements into numbers and tabulate them for analysis.

G: So what part of your studies do you use in your day-to-day business?
me: Not much of my formal studies, to be honest.
G: Do you believe that formal studies are important, then?
Me: Yes, they are important as they give you a firm grounding. As of now I am learning some things on the job, and it is a very expensive way of learning.
G: Give me some examples from your work where you feel you would have done better with a formal management education.
Me: Negotiations, for example - last year during the recession I had to renegotiate prices but I haven't been able to get them back to where there were. There were other failures of mine connected to the recession as well, for example when I had to let people go due to financial necessity. Right now I'm learning things as and when needed, but it'd be good to have these tools already present in my kitty.
L: So when you are there.. I mean if you get selected, what will happen to your company?
Me: I have two options, either I will get my largest vendor to buy me out, or I will convert it to a mixed hardware-software product that can be easily managed.
L: So you will supervise it?
Me: No, I will not be involved in day to day operation. I will convert it to be more based on trade than on intellectual property. I will have some of my leading employee take over.
L: Will you want to be part of the placements process?
Me: I was going to ask you about deferred placements. My current plan is to work in consulting for five to six years and get industry experience before my next entrepreneurial venture.
L: Ok, Which other calls do you have?
Me: I have 4 calls in all, Calcutta later this week, and in April Indore and Ranchi.
G: Okay, and all the best for the future

I totally failed to answer acad questions, and also as an entrepreneur I had the problem with income papers not reflecting appropriately. Moreover I omitted to state any of my awesome websites and side projects. But the interview was fairly smooth and had its good points.

VERDICT: Undecided - I'm not quitting my day job yet!
