P1 began by asking me to describe myself. P2 meanwhile asked me to handover my certificates file.
Me: Tried to keep intro brief and focused on my hobby which is reading books and blogs.
P1: Tell me 3 business news from last month
Me:Since I had mentioned that I like reading about economics he perhaps misconstrued it to business but still I felt that I could answer that. But to my horror I couldn't find even one example. I tried telling him about budget or inflation but he said that he wanted only business news. Finally managed to give only one obscure example. Needless to say he was unimpressed.
P1: Asked me the full form of CMMI.
Me: Answered
P1: What is the significance of maturity in CMMI.
Me: Though I knew the answer I was not very coherent. He told me that I was not very clear and I had to repeat myself.
P1: What is the difference between reliability and quality of a software
Me: Gave a good answer to this question. Used MS Word as an example.

Then P2 takes over.
P2: You mentioned that you read books. Name some books which you have read recently.
Me: Mentioned Shantaram and few others
P2: What is the story of Shantaram and what did you like about it
Me: Answered well enough
P2: What is the policy lesson that Indian policymakers can learn from it
Me: This was a very good question and I tried to tell him about how opening of our economy has stopped smuggling as it was a prominent part of the novel.
P2 however was not satisfied with this as he wanted to know what policy action can be taken in future and not what has been done in the past.
Me: Initially I did not understand what he was looking for but finally managed to. Told him about how condition of our prisons is bad and that has been portrayed in the book.
It was again an obscure answer as slums would have been a better answer here but P2 finally seemed satisfied
P2: Asked me whether I have read White Tiger and what I liked about it
Me: Told
P2: Is society or the main character the chief protagonist in White Tiger
Me: I mentioned the person and not society. Following this we had a brief argument. In retrospect I feel that I was a bit more aggresive than I should have been here as I had cut him short before he could complete his statement.
P2: Asked me about Booker Prize and Pullitzer prize
Me: Answered
P2: Name some Gnanpith award winners
Me: Answered Mahashweta Devi but mentioned Vikram Seth who had won Sahitya Academy Award (just to show that my GK is not so bad :cheerio:)
P2: Name the winner of Nobel prize in literature
Me: I did not know the name but told him that I am confused between a Portugese poet and a latin American writer.
P2: He is latin American
Me: I took the cue to tell him that though I don't know his name, I know that he is from Colombia and is a friend of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
P2: In which language do latin American writers write
me: Spanish
P2: Describe to me any work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
me: Told about One Hundred years of solitude but couldn't describe his work well. Ended up talking about his work as scientific realism and not magical realism

After a brief pause P1 interrupts and tells me that my academic record and work ex show that I have just done what everybody does. Before I could answer P2 also says that my interest seem to be in arts and that I shouldn't have done engineering in first place. I gave them a diplomatic answer and I also tried to tell them why I wanted to do MBA but was cut short.

Me: Told him about my low score in class 12th
P2: Do you regret doing your 12th from Bihar Board
Me: Again a diplomatic answer
P1: You can go now

Overall I felt that I had screwed my interview as there were some questions that I should've really answered better. Besides I also felt that many of my answers were hurried and my poise wasn't so good a couple of times.

GD topic: Positive discrimination is like paying for the past.

Had an awesome GD. Came up with lot of good points. Easily the best performer of my group.

My points- I was the only person in group who bought points other than caste based reservation.
1) women's reservation.
2) Farm loan waiver
3) People who migrated from Pakistan at time of division got reservation in licenses of petrol pumps, kerosene shops etc.
4) We should see it as investing in future rather than paying for past. It's an aim to give equal opportunities to all, which is a fundamental right.
5) A positive can not exist without negative. If some sections of society are positively discriminated then that means other sections are being negatively discriminated. So it should be seen as measure to make people self sufficient rather than making them dependent.

P1: So Abhishek. How are you?
Me: Am good.

P1: So you're into analytics? What does beta in linear regression equation tells you?
Me: Sir it tells us the impact of that individual variable.

P1: Write and explain.
Me: Wrote down regression equation.
Y= a + b1 X1 + b2 X2+..+bN Xn + e (read b as beta)
So now b1 will tell me impact of variable X1 ie how will my dependent vary if I only vary X1 keeping all other variables constant.

P1: But then that never happens. In real world, you can't keep all the other variables constant. Can you?
Me: No Sir.

P1: So that means this is just a theoretical concept and has no practical application.
Me: (Confused. Ye khan se aa gaya. Kya bol rahe hain. Samajh nahin aa rha :banghead:). Sir I'm just showing a part of real world problem. In real world all N variables will be changing and maybe you can relate it to solving an equation with N variables

(BTW I just knew regression equation from my work. I don't know the theoreticial concepts behind regression and just said whatever felt like.)

P1: So that means it's just a theoretical concept?
Me: No Sir.

(Lets it go)

P1: But why do you need regression? Even correlation can tell you relationship between two variables. What's the difference?
Me: Sir, correlation simply tells me how they are related, not the causality.(Don't know why I said causality without even knowing exact meaning of the term :oops:).

P1: What do you mean?
Me: Sir , in regression you have the dependent variable and it tells you how it is being affected by independent variable. It gives the relationship that if I change X, my Y will change like this. But in correlation, I just get to know these two are related. If one is causing other, or other is causing one or some third variable is causing both of them, we don't know.

P1: (I had not articulated the above point well. But he got my point.He was satisfied and moved on) So how many types of correlation you know?
Me: Sir I use Pearson's correlation, which is by default. It tells the linear relationship between two variables. Don't know of others.

P1: Spearman's correlation?
Me: No Sir.

P1: Who was Pearson's?
Me: Don't know. Maybe a scientist.

P1: You play Hawaiian guitar. Why is it called Hawaiian?
Me: (Saying slowly)Maybe it was originated in Hawaii. Don't know.

Me: Sir I won't give an excuse. I didn't study and hence my marks are low. I got distracted. :lookround:

Me: Sir I was a very studious person till 12th. In 1st year I was in top 10 of my batch. I thought I have always studied and should have some fun. I did a mistake.

P2: What is optical fiber? Why is it used
Me: I only know it is used as loss in optical fiber is very low and it uses the concept of total internal reflection. Other than that I don't remember Sir.

P2: What are your reading habits?
Me: Sir I don't read often.

P2: Still you would have read something?
Me: Sir last book I had read was Fortune at the bottom of pyramid.

P2: What is the point of C.K. Prahlad in that.
Me: Told.

P2: So this tells how will companies benefit by targeting to poor people. Tell me how it'll help removing poverty?
Me: (Had forgotten what I read. I had read it long time back Thought hard for 2 mins). Sir, I'm thinking on the lines that since companies are selling good to poor people, some how poor people will benefit in a way that they come out of povert.

P2: How?
Me: told them that I Don't remember. Then Gave some fundae.

P2: (got frustrated) How is this going to happen? What are you saying? You say you're from Kanpur. You think anything has changed. When you had been the last time?(I was unable to understand what he wanted to say and what point of mine he did not like.)

Sir 2.5 years back.

P2: (getting angry. Don't know why) So your parents don't live in Kanpur. Do they?
Me: Sir they do. My schooling has been from kanpur too. It's just that I was involved in opening of coaching center and it was a big responsibility. Further on holidays and weekends I used to take classes while on weekdays I used to meet faculty, conduct seminars , do marketing. So it was really heavy and did not got time to visit home for some time (Don't know if they took in positive sense that I'm really hardworking or in negative sense that I neglect my family because of work load)

P2: How will your experience of opening up a MBA center help in present job(didn't hear the question properly).
Me: Answered something. He was not convinced. Then again answered something. Still not convinced.


P2: In GD, you had said point about farmer's loan waiver? How was that relevant?
Me: Sir there are so many loans in market, home loans, car loan, education loan. Why only waive farmer's loan then? I feel it was a positive discrimination as that was really needed to make up for mistakes of past i.e. neglecting farmer's plight.

P2: So you think that was a good idea. Has it helped?
Me: I don't think so sir. There were news of increasing of farmer's suicide in that region.

P2: What? When did this happened due to farm loan waiver.
Me: (Damn! Said it wrong) No Sir. I mean due to other policies of government that involved compensating farmers families in case of suicide.

P2: So you think farm loan waiver was good?
Me:Sir, I think idea was good but the way it was implanted was not. Most of the farmers had borrowed from private money lenders and they did not get any help. Further there was also a cap on size of farm land owned.

P2: But then what can government do if people borrow from private money lenders? They can only waive off loan taken from banks. That they did.

Me: Sir but I feel that they could've still implemented it in a better way.

Me: Don't know.

Me: I tend to get emotional in my job.

P1: So what's bad in that? It's good to be emotional about your job.
Me: No sir. For example, one of my visiting faculty was not performing good and I had to ask her to leave. But I was unable to take that step which led to lot of losses. I can't be the good guy everytime. At times you need to be the bad guy too when you're managing a team or company.

P1: Any other weakness?
Me: (Thinking for 2 mins) I can't think of any other sir right now.

P1: Come on. Only one weakness?
Me: (Thinking again for 2 mins) Sir maybe I'm less inquisitive about my surrounding as you pointed earlier.

P1 was impressed with me. P2 was disappointed as I felt he had lots of expectations from me after my GD performance and I messed it up. Let's see to what extent I messed it up.

I need some clarification regarding the weight-age given to CAT scores and other 10/12/grad scores in shortlisting and final selection.

IIM-L says it will give 37.5 percent weightage to CAT scores. Now how is this 37.5 calculated?

Is it by making the absolute score of the 100 percentiler = 37.5 and accordingly marking the rest proportionally. or is it just by dividing your absolute score by 450 and converting it for 37.5.

Same for 10th and 12th scores.

Well it is the absolute score(out of 450) and not the percentiles. Shouldn't make much of a difference anyway.

Essay: Initially I did not have lot of points on this topic. So concentrated on the structure of the essay. I think in the end I wrote it pretty well.

GD: For 5 seconds no one started . I then started (for the first time in my life in a GD) off with one of the stakeholders, viz. media. By the end, had spoken quite a few times in the discussion. Overall, it was a healthy discussion (although, nobody had major points :P). Chipped in the conclusion as well.


PI: I went in 3rd, so wasn't a long wait. The panelists comprised of a Sir and Ma'am. Sir was more interested in grilling. He was going for the same few times. Ma'am was always smiling and asked few questions (the one rarely one would expect). Sir was asking the majority of the questions.

The PI was decent, ranging from Work Experience (responsibilities, domain, etc.) to "about my Dad" (what does he do, what do i learn from him, etc.). It was a 20-25 minutes interview. They asked me about my extra-currics (how I had applied my engineering studies in few of them), my hobbies, whether I have started studying about any management subjects.


*Fingers Crossed*. Done with NITIE, IIM A and IIM L interviews (the ones which I am aiming for). Left with IIM RRT (today) and IMT(tomorrow).

This is the part I messed up must have given a perfect answer for that but unfortunately I went blank
Me Sir I think its mostly because of the presence of a stable government for the last two terms. In the early 2000s the government changed hands very frequently and when the government is stable the policies they frame has a larger probability of being implemented (then suddenly remembered about the answer I had prepared and narrated it with facts he looked convinced in the end but when I started it he was like what the hell is he saying man kiddish answer)

Me (wanted to make my previous point on stable government look good) Again I would say the main problem is the lack of stable government due to which government policies are not being implemented and Naxal illiteracy, unemployment and explained a few

GD was quiet and lasted for a very short time - around 7-8 minutes only. Introduced the topic and spoke quite a lot, though didn't have that many statistics to back up my points.

Looked at my marksheets. The lady professor (LP) pretty much told me that my marks in graduation are inadequate for IIM-Lucknow, and that my performance is close to terrible. (Hello Hell!)

The young male professor (MP) asked me why I was doing domain trading while studying, and why wasn't I paying more attention to my studies?

Tried to give an answer before the LP interrupted

LP: You said that you read 3-4 books a month. Tell me something you read recently
Me: Spoke about my favorite author, Milan Kundera, and other favorite books like 100 Years of Solitude. Said that the last non fiction book I'd read was Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers"

LP: Okay what was the gist of Gladwell's "Blink"?
Me: Luckily, I'd read this book so gave a good answer.

MP: Accha you're from Rajasthan. Tell me something about Rajputana and Rajputs
Me: Forgot my mandatory Rajput history. Couldn't even recall if Maharan Pratap fought against the British or Akbar. Fumbled around before LP intervened

LP: You read the newspaper? What was the headline today?
Me: Tsnuami in Japan

LP: Name of sea next to Japan?
Me: Sea of Japan? (Pata nahin kahan se ye tapak pada..just read the headline in the morning, wasn't even sure where the tsunami stuck exactly)

MP: Accha in the Mughal dynasty, did Akbar come before Shah Jahan or what? Tell me the entire Mughal dynasty
Me: Told (itni GK to aati hai)

MP: Okay, where does Sher Shah Suri come into the picture?
Me: (Got totally confused between Sher Shah Suri and Ahmad Shah Abdali. Thought for a bit before said the correct answer)

MP: Accha what was the single greatest contribution of Sher Shah Suri?
Me: (Really? Last history 10th mein padhi thi yaar) I'm not sure sir (he introduced the Rupee and upgraded the postal system).

MP: Okay tell me about how the Governor is elected? What is the eligibility
Me: Told. Wasn't sure of the eligibility criteria. Gave the example of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, but incorrectly said that he was the Deputy Governor

MP: What are the powers of Deputy Governor?
Me: Said that he is only a titular head

MP: And the Governor is not?
Me: The same for him - also a titular head

LP: Okay tell me why do we have two houses Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha?
Me: Said some BS about how we are based on British system which has House of Lords and House of Commons. Also said how being a member of Rajya Sabha can allow people to become ministers without winning an election. Gave example of Manmohan Singh

LP: Accha why do the British have this system?
Me: Basically said some BS about how there was a division in the British parliament after the 17th century restoration and end of civil war. Have no idea if this is factually correct

MP: Okay, there are two houses in the state. What is the name of the other house, besides Vidhan Sabha?
Me: No idea sir

There were a few more questions, basically about geography, history and civics.

Seriously man, I haven't read this stuff in 7 years. No questions on academics, no questions on my domain business, no questions on "Why MBA?", nothing about entrepreneurship. Just a series of questions on history, civics, and geography.

And this after I was pretty much told that my graduation marks are 'terrible' and there was no reason why I should do an MBA.

Feel a bit down and low. I'm an arts student, but I had PCMB in XIIth. Ye sab padhe hue pata nahin kitne saal ho gaye. Could hardly come up with the correct answers, fumbled around a lot, though spoke about as clearly and as confidently as I could (managed to even keep up a smile ).

That is it, just 10 minutes. I was the first one to be interviewed. I did well in GD, started it and all. But guess what, I cant get over the way P1 behaved. If it was stress inducing tactic, it didn't stress me, it just made me sad.
If it was not, I wont go to L.

the panelists were both from non engineering background. The guy who went before me was told on the face that we hate engineers. As soon as i entered, the 1st question they asked was : Did u read yesterday's experience on pg?
Me: No sir, but i did talk to a frnd of mine who had interview yesterday
P2: So what did he told u about the panel
Me: Sir, he told me that panel is very friendly :lookround:

Me: Yes sir i did, and he told me that you are not a very big fan of engineers!

The rest of the interview was very chill. Very much profile centric. Asked few things about my extra curricular achievements. No stressing out! No acads! No current affairs!

Me: Sir B is one of the most premier institute, it has very good faculty and best student exchange and also one of the best placements. For L sir, I talked to a few seniors, read on the mentor prog. and also in one of the websites that the 1st thing u hear when u come to L is "Welcome to hell"

L:Rahul,ur scores seem to have declined absymally low in grad...from 80's nd 90's to lower 60's..nd den u dropped also..hw will u cope wid d rigour at IIM-L...u seem to be out of acads for 4 years and u dnt have any work-ex also to leverage upon
M:(yeh asliyat inhe kaise pata chali ki maine 4 saal kuch nhi kiya)...tried to justify dat lost track in grad,didnt hav any goal..didnt knw dat grad marks were imp..blah blah...both didnt luk convinced at all

M:Talked of my extra-currics nd long-term vision(dis one ques hit me hard i think as I cudnt give specific answer to them...wil have to prepare dis well for MDI)

Overall I was glad they didnt get into core academics nd also that I was asked lead questions which helped me to talk about my extra-currics....but they seemed to counter me at every thing...maybe it ws kinda stress interview but they seemed relaxed sipping tea nd all....I feel I cudnt justify my stand on what motivated me for mgt consulting nd why I shud be prefered over a work-ex guy?? Wid poor grad marks,drop year,ordinary GDPI....chances luk very bleak of making the final cut...
