GD and Essay Topic : Women's Reservation bill will enhance the gender divide.
Essay - 15 mins , GD - 12 mins
8 / 10 people present.
GD was nice and even though the topic was of a generic nature , the group ensured everyone contributed. I produced at least 6 valid points and intervened for 6-7 times. I was the third to start , but summarised the proceedings.

INTERVIEW:

I was the first to be called in the group and was called five minutes after the completion of GD.Documents had to be arranged in a certain order and hence no time to panic.

I went inside:
P1 and P2 : Both Male Professors. M : Myself

P1: Gave me a thorough look from top to bottom and asked me to sit (thankfully with a smile)
P1: So , tell us something about yourself.
M: Told from start to present in a very brief and concise way.Also told that I am a Fixed Income Analyst and have a FRM certfication .
P1: What is term structure of interest rates?
M : Ansd.
P1: What is YTM?
M: Ansd.
P1: How are prices and yield related for fixed income and what are the reasons for that?
M: Ansd.
P1: How to arrive at the present value value of a fixed income security and a fixed income derivative? What should be an appropriate duscount rate for both of these and why?
M: Ansd confidently as that is my main job.
P1: What do you understand by yield to call and what are the reasons for having it in a fixed income security ?
M : Ansd.
P1: What is immunization and how is it achieved?
M: Three points , explained clearly . They seemed satisfied.
P1: How will you use convexity as a fixed income trader?
M : again explained clearly as that is part of my job.

P2: What is Letter of Credit?
M : Didn't know the defn. , but explained the term clearly with an example.
P2: What is Bill of Lading?
M : Sorry Sir, I don't know because I don't have much exposure in Trade Finance.
P2: What is the Contracts Act?
M : Sorry sir, I don't know.
P2 : Have you ever worket on Credit seat?
M : Yes Sir , only for 6 months. 5.5 years in Treasury and Investments.

P1: What do you undersatnd by demutualisation of stock exchange?
M: Sorry sir , I don't know , although I have heard about the term , but not sure about it.
P1: What is corporatisation of Stock Exchange?
M : Told , but not with confidence as I was not very sure of the answer. Gave the example of MCX.
P1: How will this FRM Certification help you in your PGP ?
M: Gave a long lecture !!!
P1: How many calls do you have ?
M: Only one.

In the meanwhile , P2 was thoroughly going through my file.

Overall Rating:

I can't rate my performance . Friends you have to rate it. But in Essay and GD , I will give 7/10.

Just a little observation... they are grilling more on the acads of the people close to 30 months of work-ex. Somewhere in this thread I read the panel saying to the candidate that since he has only 30 months of work-ex, he must remember his acads subjects as well.

8 ppl in my panel. One was absent.
Topic - More IITs and IIMs will dilute academic excellence.

I had a writer's block just at the beginning of my essay. Managed to cope with it and wrote a few decent points. Could not complete the essay properly, I thought that the alloted time was a bit less.

GD was average for me and overall it was a peaceful GD.I came in 3-4 times with decent points. The discussion was ok but not great, so the Panel told us to end it. No summaries were asked for.

I was the first one in my Panel to be interviwed.

M: GoodMorning sirs.
The chair was kept at quite a distance from the table. Was told to sit down and pull the chair closer. P2 took my file and kept looking at it almost throughout the intrvw.
P1: Ok, so u work as SW developer in Fin. domain.
M: Yes sir
P2: A friend of yours from the same company had his intrvw yesterday. He works in Capital Markets. What is the difference between Finance and Capital Markets?
M: I started with Fin. is a broader term and went on talkin about what I do. I mentioned about Futures Trades in between.
P1: What is the diff between Futures and Forwards.
M: Told.
P1: So, what all is traded?
M: Told.
P1: U are from Aerospace Engineering. Why futures trades are not applied in Aerospace Industry as in Flying?
M: (I didnt get the question :shock:)
P1: He then asked why ppl lives are insured in flights and why not their lives be future traded??!!
M: (Weird question I thought) Then said something about underlying instrument of a futures contract.
P2: What is similarity between Options and Insurance?
M: Told something about premium.
P1: No, u are not getting his question. What is similar?
P2: Why are Futures, Options trades done?
M: (Then it struck me what they were expecting) I told about minimizing risks, hedging because of uncertainty in future. Insurance is also done because of uncertainty in future.
P1: Multiply a 3x2 and 4x3 matrix.
M: Cannot be multiplied.
P2: Gave me a paper and pencil and told me to draw a diagram of what I do at work.
M: I thought he wanted a data flow diagram. Drew it to the best of ability explaining trade origination and reconcilition.
P2: On which trade exchange are these trades done?
M: NYSE, LSE
P2: Ok, it's been just 30 months u have been working. So u must remember some acads.
M: yes Sir
P1: You are an Aerospace Engineer. Tell me, a plane is flying at 10000 ft. Other plane is coming from the opposite direction and they are goin to collide. How would u avoid the accident?
M: I started off with some Air Traffic funda, but he told me to explain in pure tech terms. I did decently here, explaining the control surfaces, and their functions with diagrams. I told him ways by which it can be done.
P2: He was looking at my salary slip and there was some marriage allowance term in it. Asks if someone marries 10 times will he get 10 marriage allownaces:shock
M: Told somethng crap. Smiles.
P2: U have done a course of Art and Video Production (was an elective). What did u do in it?Tell me how do u make a movie interesting? P2 also tells P1 that I am saved coz I didnt do economics as an elective.
M: Told. Casual discussion upon it.
P2: What was this course on Space Dynamics?
M: Told.
P2: Asked something about rockets. How are space capsules slowed down while re-entrance? Other pretty simple questions
M: Told
P2: Ok, tell me one Indian painter besides MF Hussain and his painting
M: Told both.
P2 looked satisifed.
P1: What other calls?
M: Only L.
Both:why? They both started looking at my score card and tried to find out why. P1 said bit less in DI, P2 said no, 93 is decent.
M: I think my 12th boards are a bit low.thats why.
P2: Ok, It was a pleasure meeting you Ravi.
M : My pleasure sir.
Pleasantries exchanged. I walked towards the door and I realised I had brought with me the pencil they gave me. Returned and said sorry.

Feel good intrvw, no standard questions. Most ppl had same kind of intrvws in IIML Noida campus. I think my GD Essay has let me down and intrvw was ok. Let's see.

Arrived at HMATC for the third time this season and each time there was this sense of dejavu attached to the place.Also,my mom specifically called up and asked me to sit at exactly the same place where I sat while waiting for my IIMK interview :shock:

We were subsequently split up into 6 panels each having close to 10 students.

Essay +GD

"Unpleasant prison terms can read to faster reformation amongst criminals" or something on similar lines.

Wrote quite a few points.Again showed inclination towards community service rather than brutal treatment meted out to prisoners.Took an example of "Do aankhe baara haath" and went on to quote the song "Ai malik tere bande hum". On the flip side,talked about how in Bihar,certain cops were hailed by the locals for poring battery fluid on rapists who werent given adequate punishment.

The GD didnt start of too well.Too many people speaking together at a time.It was again about who was able to outshout the other,better.I did my part Chipped in 4-5 times.Healthy discussion I would say,although most of us digressed considerably.

I was no.4 in the panel to be interviewed.Some quotes by No.1,No.2 and No.3

No.1---- "Lag gayee yaar.Paseene choot rahe the.Aisa tha ki NDTV ka bhi full form bhool gaya :shock:"

Two brilliant profs were in the panel.Throughout the interview I kept getting the feeling they knew absolutely everything there it is to know.Prof 1--B1 and Prof2--B2.

But regarding the things that you had mentioned in the Q n As, I want to add just one thing. Don't lie in the interview. Because there may be so many reasons for an individual to become an MBA but one should tell the things that he himself believes. It is better to introspect and find out yourself the reasons of doing an MBA (with a clean and fresh mind).

It is our future and we should know what we are doing and why.

Dude! its not a spam at all! u r the 1st one to have the critique view at the answers and your answers are better than mine. come to think of it, i just brought down my chances of converting the call from 60% to 40%. i mean your answers surely seems contain the words the panel would have loved to hear.
btw for the first question, couldnt have blamed IIT prep cause scored just 71 in chemistry. questions were
will keep these answers in mind in I-nterview.

Brief Snapshot of the attempt: I hail frm jharkhand. and today morning i went through the details of why n how jharkhand was formed. So essay was cool. mentioned that though motive behind the formation was based on genuine reasons, separate state happened only because the then CM of bihar was promised support from JMM chief to form the cabinet. so the CM of bihar actually saw tht the bill was passed.
Mentioned these points during the GD. made two entries, put some valid points. GD was neither a fish market nor a collaborative one. but people were put across their points. most of the time the group was concentrated on the pros n cons of formation of a new state. we digressed a lot.
Time given : 15 min again (the panel said it was 15 min. but felt it was over in 10 min. i think they got bored of the constant chatter )

This could've been answered for atleast a day long speech :P. Here are some points:
1. You cleared IIT-JEE and then studied at ISM. So, you have a habit of sitting for long continuous hours for study that is required very much at IIMs.
2. Famous saying, at UG you learned how to learn. ISM has good focus on learning and learning the required stuff. You don't lose focus which you learnt from ISM as the course was a lot and time was limited.
3. Even your point on remaining in your own field could've been better dealth with. Example, you got your technical expertise of your field from B.Tech. and you want to stay in the same field post-IIM also. In IIMs, you don't have to focus on the technical aspect of your subject and can focus only on management. Had you not done your B.Tech. from ISM which helped you have a firm knowledge of your subjects, you might be struggling to chose your future course of action. Now it's only learning management and that too with a focus of your own field that is left for you to learn... Obviously there might be some followup questions from your courses at ISM but that would have given a direction to the interview....

Not sure if you prepared well for this question :(. Why bank post IIML job? IIML has entrepren. cell that you talked about too. You might not have money but IIML will help you engage with a network of people and VCs that can contribute to your idea. You might want to start the blue print for your company from Day1 and present it on various forums at IIML. You can talk to VCs given that you'll have an IIM tag and they'll be more than happy to listen to you on many forums. Alumni community, that can pitch in too with some people already in this field. At the end, even if you don't get sufficient funding by the end of your course, you can join a company of your own field and continue to sell your idea to ultimately create your own company. Choices, again, are many. Just open up your mouth and keep on talking and talking and talking. :)

R: (howzzz tht! :shock:) maam i think initial capital is the cost incurred in forming the first product. like i wnt to make a product, so whatever cost goes into the making of the first product is the initial capital....

One more thing: todays observation was that people with considerable work ex (>= 4 years can definitely considered as considerable work ex, but wont comment on work ex below this) were asked questions pertaining to their work ex itself. a guy with close to 6 years of work ex was even questioned on some component of his salary (albeit bit deeper questions ).

so guys with "considerable work ex" need not worry about acads. but it doesnt mean u shud not prepare at all. not able to say the correct definition of moment of inertia may not loose you points but if you say the correct definition they will definitely add some stars to ur marking.

Brief Snapshot of the attempt: I hail frm jharkhand. and today morning i went through the details of why n how jharkhand was formed. So essay was cool. mentioned that though motive behind the formation was based on genuine reasons, separate state happened only because the then CM of bihar was promised support from JMM chief to form the cabinet. so the CM of bihar actually saw tht the bill was passed.
Mentioned these points during the GD. made two entries, put some valid points. GD was neither a fish market nor a collaborative one. but people were put across their points. most of the time the group was concentrated on the pros n cons of formation of a new state. we digressed a lot.
Time given : 15 min again (the panel said it was 15 min. but felt it was over in 10 min. i think they got bored of the constant chatter )

u will get one paper (ruled both sides) to write the essay. And you are not given any time to think over the topic. in my essay we were asked to start writing straightaway.

This is for all the puys who are yet to attend their GD/PI: please take your photo identity card (PAN,passport,driving licence,etc.) with you. though it is not mentioned in the gd/pi call letter of IIML, the panel kept asking for any photo identity proof.

SO hav somekind of proof with yourself.

Brief Snapshot of the attempt: The GD went very well and everybody got a chance to speak. A girl in my group started the discussion but afterwards I took the charge. Always talked to everyone in the group and also we all let each one to speak and make their points. I put forth a lot many points like

a. need for quality of service.
b. timeliness and effectiveness are also important these days.
c. government should be an enabler as it is not the core competence of the govt.
d. One guy told about private companies will only make money and no subsidy to poor. I told with this UID thing we can achieve that also even if a private company runs that service.

M: Sir I think there are two ways which can enhance my company's performance. And they are: First More leeway in terms of deciding the pricing of products and second Improvement in internal communication and flow of responsibilities.
G: M do you thin that the government should abolish subsidy on Petro products.
M: Yes sir but in a phased wise manner. Cited some examples from the Kirit Parikh committee that how we can remove the subsidy from petrol and that will impose an extra burden of just 50-80 rs on the users. And sir for products like kerosene the real needy can get it through UID Project of Nandan Nilkeni and the rest can be sold at market driven rates.
G: But tell me M government takes heavy amount of taxes on petro products. Is it justifiable.
M: No sir. Apart from that there are many phases where government charges taxes, even for movement within states in some cases. But it provides subsidies. So why to charge at the first itself. Gradually it should lower down the tax rates on petro products.
G: Will the passing of full burden cause inflation.
M: May be in the short run but in due course of time it will balance out and things will move fine.
G: Hmm. Tell me what is you take on Women's reservation bill.
M: Sir I think we need to improve the basics and then talk about this bill.As an example most of the girls in villages do not go to schools because of lack of toilets and things like this need to be improved first.
G: No M I didn't ask that. I asked whether this bill should be passed or not.
M: Yes sir but without any divisive criteria like quota within a quota.

GD was quite decent. No fish market. Though my performance was not so good, chipped-in only 3 times with two decent points. Everyone spoke and no summary was asked to make. Overall ok.

I was the last in panel to be interviewed. Long wait was killing me. But had nice chit-chat with other fellows, that helped me in killing time. Thanx to Abhinav, Rajendra, Shouvik, Samson.....
Panel Members Intro: One Jolly Fellow ( say J), one serious but quite modest fellow (say S)
Questions:
Me: Good afternoon sir.
J : (nodded and asked to have seat). So you are from BEC, Shibpur ! U have two beautiful playground in your college- Lords and Oval !(these are name of the grounds. Don't get confused. God knows how on earth he came to know this!)
Me : Yes sir.
J: In which u used to play?
Me: Lords.
J : What's special about Lords? Why not Oval.
Me : Told something
J : BEC has become full fledged university from deemed university. What are the changes that followed?
Me: Told about better placements....nos of faculties....better infrustructure..inclusion of Pure science depts etc etc...
J : What do u do exactly in Thermax?
Me: Told about my profile
J: Why did u leave NTPC?
Me: Told. about changing my domain of works....in NTPC I was in Power Plant operation....but din't have any exposure on detailing/designing....in Thermax I do detailing....knowing power plant's every aspect..blah blah...

J nodded to S to take over....in between S was checking my certis...

S: Should we stop all thermal power plants as these create pollution ?
Me: a long explanation....said it's not possible right now as growth will be hampered...everything depends on electricity and coal is our major fuel....we can mitigate CO2 and other GHG by taking CDM measures...parallely we may give emphasis on renewable energy....and many things...( I'm a veteran of Power sector...so it's too easy to explain a lot)...seemed convinced.

S: What is carbon Credit?
Me: Told.
S: Elaborate more about carbon credit.
Me: Told about concept...CER...present value of Carbon credit....it's a measure of kyoto protocol....etc etc...

S: I've heard nos Tigers are coming down...what's the reason?
Me: Told about Poaching....skins are much valuable....Sunderban Zone is a vulnerable zone as we share a common border with Bangladesh...it's very difficult to safeguard completely....also local fishermen sometimes kill Tigers to safeguard themselves...etc etc...
S: How can be it prevented ?
Me: Said about more strict security and vigilance..( I forgot to tell about mass awerness )...not so convincing...but ok..had many talks about sundarban....

Suddenly J took over and gave me a GEMSCLIP...

J: Is it a machine?
Me: Yes sir.
J : Why?
Me: It increases our comfort !
(Both were laughing )
Actually it has mechanical advantage more than 1...so it's a machine

S: U din't get thru IITs and NITs....don't u repent for that....
Me: Told something....like..I was from a remote village...didn't have any exposure of IIT prep...blah blah...regarding NITs...with my rank I could make a seat in various NITs....explained BEC was good enough...also reccommended by seniors and family etc etc....

S: What does RBI do?
Me: told about moneytry regulation....tackling inflation etc etc with the help of various tools like CRR, Repo rate, reverse repo rate etc etc...
S: What is CRR?
Me: Told.
S: What is Repo rate?
Me: Told.
S: What is Reverse Repo rate
Me: Told.
S: How does CRR regulate market?
Me: Explained very well and they were convinced.

Me: Told..
J: what do u think who should hire you in IIML?
Me: Told about my wish of continuing with energy sector. any small company with higher job responsibility as power sector is booming....also told that I might take study leave also though it's not decided yet...as thermax is also growing...blah blah...
S: Why did u study about RBI? you are a mechanical engineer...
Me: I'm very much interested about stock market sir.

Both smiled and hinted interview is over....

Interview was chilled and relax...enjoyed..no stress at any pt of time...on an avg...15-20 min for interview...no need to carry photocopies...work ex ppl...last and first salary slips with joining letter will do..
