GD was strange .. "Women's quota will increase gender disparity"
Only 6 ppl .. one fellow came late .. poor guy ! (if you read this .. do pm me ..wat they did to u after u were sent to 1st floor) .. we just kept on talking till we were asked to shut our mouths ...
PI was weird ... more about my own profile .. my b.tech courses what i studied .. some basic kindergarten questions about what is this course what is that course .. the prof almost read through the entire marksheet of mine and kept on asking about courses ... then asked about extra curriculars .. hobbies ...
Not a single question about 30months of my toil in the IT industry .
Knowingly i gave only 2 wrong answers .. of which 1 i covered up .. so absolutely no clue.
Either they decided to kick me out or decided take me in before the interview itself.. tats how i see it ... very very very HR like interview ..

Good day sir. This post might be considered as a spam by many but I couldn't resist to reply so please bare with me for this single post
Dude, you have a decent work-ex and the interview seem quite cheerful with I guess no questions (?) asked on acads. (If there were some, please share them too).
Anyways, I think you could have replied some questions better. Replies inline... I know there might be multiple way to reply but just sharing what I think could have helped more.
Best of luck for your results.

Interview & Essay
Venue: IIML noida campus
Date : 28th march - 2pm
Essay :
Topic: Breaking larger state into smaller states is political incentive (this was not the exact sentence - but the meaning is same)
Number of Ppl present: 10 (1 absent)
Time: 15 min
Brief Snapshot of the attempt: I hail frm jharkhand. and today morning i went through the details of why n how jharkhand was formed. So essay was cool. mentioned that though motive behind the formation was based on genuine reasons, separate state happened only because the then CM of bihar was promised support from JMM chief to form the cabinet. so the CM of bihar actually saw tht the bill was passed.
Mentioned these points during the GD. made two entries, put some valid points. GD was neither a fish market nor a collaborative one. but people were put across their points. most of the time the group was concentrated on the pros n cons of formation of a new state. we digressed a lot.
Time given : 15 min again (the panel said it was 15 min. but felt it was over in 10 min. i think they got bored of the constant chatter)

Panel Members Intro: One gentleman (M), one lady(L) and me (R)
Questions:
(the guy jst before me told me to wait for 1 min and then enter. i stood at the door and after 40 sec the door was opened by the lady)
R: (hurried tone) sorry maam i was waiting for one minute to get over.
L: didnt u hear us summon you?
R: no maam, it was not audible outside.
L: its ok....
(by this time we had reached the table)
M: sitdown
R: (in hushed voice) thank you
(i kept the file to myself)
M: you got 94.17 in xth and 78.6 in XIIth. What happened?
L: Please pass me your file
R: (passing on the file to the lady) Sir i lost track of my goal after class xth (). i had studied so hard for xth but was not happy even when i got 94%. thats when i felt i needed something else in life and i started looking for it. and this went on till my graduation. I....
Could have talked about IIT-JEE preparation. If your PCM marks were good then it could've helped explain your points better as your focus was something else. :)
M: Tell me something about ISMU.
R: It stands for Indian school of mines university. it was started in the year 1926 with three core branches: petroleum, mining & geology (i think i might be wrong on the petroleum part). my branch came into existence in 1979. Since....
M: What was your rank in your batch?
R: u mean in my branch?
M: (nodded)
R: 5th
M: Out of?
R: 17 () (i can say he was not all impressed:shock:)
M: what was your rank in the entire batch?
R: Sir our insti doesnt provide the overall rank.....() (its true though)
M: Since 2006 u have been working in HZL. what do you do there?
R: (told about my job responsibilities : that i maintain heavy mining machineries and look after the planning part and control a budget of Rs. 35 million. and also that i am the incharge, at departmental level, of all international standards accredited to our unit ISO 9001, etc.)
M: will ur company give u study leave if you work there for 6 years?
R: no sir, we dont have any such provisions...
M: HZL belongs to birlas right?
R: No sir its vedanta
M: (nods n turns towards the lady) u want to ask something?
L: ya sure, so what are your responsibilities at HZL?
R: (again repeated the above mentioned story)
L: so how does your b.tech degree will help you in management?
R: (bowled ) maam my work profile implies tht i have to work with workmen....
This could've been answered for atleast a day long speech :P. Here are some points:
1. You cleared IIT-JEE and then studied at ISM. So, you have a habit of sitting for long continuous hours for study that is required very much at IIMs.
2. Famous saying, at UG you learned how to learn. ISM has good focus on learning and learning the required stuff. You don't lose focus which you learnt from ISM as the course was a lot and time was limited.
3. Even your point on remaining in your own field could've been better dealth with. Example, you got your technical expertise of your field from B.Tech. and you want to stay in the same field post-IIM also. In IIMs, you don't have to focus on the technical aspect of your subject and can focus only on management. Had you not done your B.Tech. from ISM which helped you have a firm knowledge of your subjects, you might be struggling to chose your future course of action. Now it's only learning management and that too with a focus of your own field that is left for you to learn... Obviously there might be some followup questions from your courses at ISM but that would have given a direction to the interview....
The list is long... keep on speaking and speaking and speaking :P
L: (shook her head) no no, my question is how your b.tech will help you in management?
R: (well she had repeated the question) maam i did not get your question...
L: my question is how ur b.tech from ism will help you in management course at iimL? whats the link?
R: (still shocked) maam there are lots of companies which are into mining machinery manufacturing. so after i complete my mba i can get into those companies nd .....
L: so u can then get into the management cadre?
R: yes maam, thts the link! (eureka!)
L: (is abt to ask the next question, but i speak in between)
R: even one more reason is that i want to go for entrepreneurship. n my idea is in the buying and selling of used mining machinery. its a nascent concept is india but is huge industry in australia and america. this is one of the reason i wnt to go for mba.
L: so u want to stay in this field of yours and go forward?
R: yes maam (inflated)
L: wht abt the funding?
R: (completely deflated) i am banking on my work post iim L (she frowned) and also i am in talk with one company, ceo of which has promised to fund my venture if i happen to come into this.....i also have a frnd of mine frm iimc and we both want to venture out with our idea.
Not sure if you prepared well for this question :(. Why bank post IIML job? IIML has entrepren. cell that you talked about too. You might not have money but IIML will help you engage with a network of people and VCs that can contribute to your idea. You might want to start the blue print for your company from Day1 and present it on various forums at IIML. You can talk to VCs given that you'll have an IIM tag and they'll be more than happy to listen to you on many forums. Alumni community, that can pitch in too with some people already in this field. At the end, even if you don't get sufficient funding by the end of your course, you can join a company of your own field and continue to sell your idea to ultimately create your own company. Choices, again, are many. Just open up your mouth and keep on talking and talking and talking. :)
L: so he is going to fund your venture? do u knw the difference between initial capital and working capital.
R: (howzzz tht!) maam i think initial capital is the cost incurred in forming the first product. like i wnt to make a product, so whatever cost goes into the making of the first product is the initial capital....
L: it means the land, the infrastructure, u have to put capital into to form the first product....
R: right maam (nodded)
L: and working capital?
R: once the product is formed anything tht goes into the sustenance of the product is the working capital....
L: ok rana, tht will be. u wnt to ask us anything?
R: maam, i would like to know about the entrepreneurship cell, abhyaan, at IIML.
L: yes, we encourage students with entrepreneurship and even have some subjects related to it....(looks towards M for support)
M: yes we do tht.....
R: is there any fixed percentage of students who go for entrepreneurship every year?
M: its like many say tht they want to go for entrepreneurship but only a few go for it (thts some hard fact...and thts true most of the time. we mba aspirants have made it a taboo not to speak of some entrepreneurial dream in interview)
L: we do have 2-3 students who opts out of the placement and go on with their venture...
R: (all smiles)
L: OK rana, best of luck to you....
R: thank you...
R: (turning to M) thank you...
(i leave the room, leaving both of them pondering over my decision...)

MISC.
Any other relevant detail.: puys keep track of the time during the essay session. the panel may inform you just before the end of essay time : only 1 minute left. you will hardly get any time to conclude if you are in the middle of some idea.
so keep track of time during essay nd try to conclude in some way

Are there ruled sheets ? Also are we given any time before for thinking about the topic .i.e before the we start writing the essay ?
milind.adpaiker SaysParticularly work ex ppl, did you take your CV along? I know it is not compulsory but pluses/minuses of carrying it along?
Buddy the IIM L profile sheet in enough and you need not carry anything else.
Even if you carry they may not even ask for that. And if you deliberately show them, I think that wont be a right thing to do.
Apart from the original certificates,do we need to bring attested photocopies too?? Please reply asap as i am not having photocopies attested and my interview is tomorrow
Thanks in advance :)

A Quick query.
The essay time specified by you guys is 15 mins. Does this include the time to think as well?
Because in IIM B interview, separate 5 mins were given for thinking and the writing time was separate.
15 mins to think and write down seems a touch tight to me.
Thanks,
Gagan.
