Travelling! thats one of the best in NE

To Shillong, you need to come via GUW only... from Darjeeling you can come to NJP and from there, there are loads of train to guw... from there its just a matter of taxi.

so it shud be... -> guw -> njp -> darjeeling -> njp ->guw ->shillong

I would suggest you to go to Sikkim as well, its a very beautiful place...

dude- personally- will tell u to get couple of years of work ex as value addition n then come for MBA frm IIM-S... m a fresher too n have talked wid lots of seniors- work-ex always helps... plus, after paying nearly 11 lakhs n giving 2 years, if ur placement increase is just abt 2-3 lakhs, i would say u r making a mistake...

though completely upto u, u can always get 2-3 years work ex, n again give CAT and aim for A,B,C!!!

I have got waitlist from IIM S and calls converts MDI, NITIE. But I would be going for IIM-S if I get.

I interacted with many. I gathered that, The college has been doing good!

Heard students there have won many competitions in other IIMs which means that are really good!

Placements have been great too! In the long run I will be part of the IIM Community. with batch for 2010 to be at the max 120, lil batch means better prob of gud offers. I kno am thinking too far .

One senior management professional told that the insti is strategically locacted in north east which is going to be the focus area of companies in the future!

Many pointed that rankings is not an indicator of a college before atleast 3 years and so no point using that for iims . The first batch came out this year only rite?

Fervently wishing my waitlist moves !!!!!

Lemme do a quick recount of things I like about this college in my one year stay here.

It is an awesome college having made great strides in its little over 2 years existence so far.
The place is out of the world to say the least. You have to be here to understand the gravity of my previous stmt.

The students quality here is really good and am sure peer learning will be top notch which is the hallmark of any IIM :)

The placement of 10 lacs in its first year just went to show the confidence that the industry has on this fledgling insti. Am sure things will move up like anything!!

Logistical problems might be there but video conferencing and efforts by the college has helped in having significant industrial interactions.

You will cherish your perfect IIM experience in a resort like place for the next 2 years!! Take it from me!!!

But Waitlisted @ IIMK at no.7 in SC category....

I have to accept offer of IIMS on or before 25 th May with 90,000 Rs. fees & acceptance letter.

But W/L movement of IIMK will be declared after 24 th May only!


What should I do now?
Will IIMS refund my fees if I cancel the admission at later stage? How much?
or should I wait for IIMK itself??? Will it move upto that no.??

The fees cover tuition, library, computing facilities, books and course material, examination fees and
hostel room charges.

and please 75k is not mess charges its a collection of a host of other charges

Does IIM Shillong has disadvantages vis a vis getting visiting faculty & Industry interface.
I can't say about Second rung B schools, but XL/FMS/MDI are all proven B schools...what would be your advice ?
I am not asking negatives just objective points

P.S -- When I told in my father's ofc ( a big PSU)..none of them even knew if there is an IIM in shillong..but they had tieups with MDI & NITIE for Mgmt programs & Consultancy

we have a very good network of visiting faculties. many faculties from foreign universities, other IIMs and other private Bschools visit IIM Shillong regularly for lecturers and for taking courses....

industry interaction has also now started in full swing... many eminent personalities keep visiting us regularly for interacting with us.

We have made a brochure and uploaded it on the website, also on PG b4.... please go thru it properly and all ur queries would be answered

I've already had a few people ask me the IIMS V/S MDI question today and i'd just point out a few points which helped me make my mind.

The two biggest points in my mind before joining IIMShillong were:

Brand: To be honest, the biggest factor for IIMS vis-a-vis MDI is the brand IIM. This is reflected in the placements of the first batch which had an average CTC of around 10L which is at par(if not better than) with MDI( whose average is between 9-10 as far as i know).

The tag is something which in my opinion stays with you for a lifetime. Now MDI is a very good B school but the brand IIM stands apart

Batch Size:MDI has a batch of 335( 240 PGPM + 35 IM + 60 HR)while our batch is of 66 which might increase a little for our juniors. smaller batch size in my opinion leads not only leads to a better bonding in the batch but also helps in placements.

If a student gets placed sometime when half of the batch is placed that would be around the 160th person in MDI compared to the 35th guy in IIMS. Now , getting the 160th guy placed in a very good profile is very very hard in my opinion but in IIMS i believe the chances are better.

Some more parameters you should consider

Placements: At my time we only had the internship reports of the seniors to go by and there was greater uncertainty.Now, you guys can have some comparison of the avg salary/ highest salary(domestic and international) /number of international offers/recruiters/profiles etc. and i believe IIMS has done exceedingly well in all these parameters even by standards of older B Schools even though this was just the 1st placement season and i think things look very bright for the coming batch.

One of the best things i came to know after i joined the institute is the batch mates i have. We have toppers from IIT/BITS(pilani and Goa) /NITs/SRCC/Stephens etc. The batch diversity and quality is amazing.

Moreover there are many who have left XLRI(BM&PMIR;)/MDI/NITIE/SPJain/IIFT etc to be here.Not to mention many people have work ex from some of the most prestigious firms.


Having said all this i still believe its your personal choice in the end & an important one at that.But for me, IIM Shillong was one of the best choices I have made in my life.

Thanks for the observation. It hadn't caught my eyes. So the additional expense is 83K over & above the tuition fees of 4L for the 1st year. Tuition fees for 2nd year is 4.5L. Will the additional expenses be same as that of 1st year? A concrete value will help one is making a decision.

some of these expenses are once for 2 years.. eg the security deposit... so it should be lower in the second year

we dont have foreign collaboration in terms of exchange programs yet... but talks are on.. wait and watch how things turn up... however we do have collaborations in other aspects such as running joint programs etc... pl visit website for more details about the same
