Hi all,A pathetic interview performance for me yesterday.. Anyways let me share it..Profile:10th: 89.14% (gujarat board)12th: 78.15% (gujarat board)B.Tech. (ECE): 7.39/10 (68.9%) (nirma institute ahmedabad)Cat: 99.86% (maths-99, english-99.66, di-97.81)GD/PI was in Mumbai.GD topic: A successful man is one who plans for the problems and avoids them and not one who faces problems as they come and solves them.Wrote an essay first for 30 minutes and then had a GD. I started it. Had a decent discussion but I think my performance could have been better.Interview:P1, P2 and meP1-You had to wait a long time (mine was the last one)me-yes long wait..p2-What were the other people saying about us?me-everyone was feeling good.. we were discussing about the questions you asked.. p1-So what did they say?me-just that the interviews were really cool.. and you were asking general stuff.. like why mbap2-But we never asked that question, did we p1?? maybe it must be some other panel..me(befuddled)-maybe.. they also said you were asking questions about extracurriculars and all...p2-ok tell me, these days the temperatures in different parts of the country have reached record lows.. do u think it is the result of global warming?me-i don't think it is exactly because of global warming but maybe (told a bit about global warming and climate patterns changing) p2-ok tell me something about yourself... as a person.... and about your family background..me-told about values and all and about my father who is an amputee but still has managed so much in life... (an ominously said) "ALL THE BEST" (Last year when i had given the interview, they had asked me whether i would be able to bring the degree certificate in june and i had said yes, and i had converted that... so this one looks really ominous.. also i think my views in gd might not have been acceptable to the professors... )me-thank you sir.. Over in just 5 mins...Overall if one sees, though nothing can be evident, yet their body language seemed very dangerous to me... Lets see what happens...Best of luck to all..

The GD was a proper discussion, not one of those fish markets. Everyone got a chance to speak and we even came to a consensus!!! I started the GD, defined success.. 6-7 entries overall.. PI:

My interaction with other people who had their interviews told me that they were all those typical feel-good interviews.. No idea wot their criteria would be in the end.. People with work ex were asked questions related to that. No acads, no extra currics, no current affairs in my panel.. It was basically about introspection (career objectives et al).
My opinion:
As usual, be confident! I believe that the GD plays a very important role. Since the panel is the same, ur GD performance would definitely give u an edge in ur interview. Try and enter early in the GD, creates a good impression..

my perspective is that if they were asking technical questions to a Gold Medallist, then it's going towards his/her strength...secondly, even if it's a short interview, the communication skills and the confidence level of a candidate can be judged well...again my take.. ;)

nd sir, ye analysis is better left for the panelists...karm karo, fal ki ichcha chor do... we are done with our parts...ab let's get started for the next one...

Topic: Good things always arise from good thinking.
7 present candidates (+ 2 absent).

They gave us 30 mins. to write.... and 15 mins to discuss... no summaries were asked.... and they stopped EXACTLY after 15 mins. cutting off the person who was speaking at that point of time... (ME)

PI: (15-20 mins)

P1:
-Asked me about IIM shillong! (genuine talk... dates/deadlines/form pattern.. what was asked in their form...)
-then acads. (comp sci)
-What is Object oriented programming? Parellel Computing? Time and Space Complexity? basics in DBMS, Data Structures? and questions on those... (then he also asked some other definitions i had never heard of! all in all he wanted me to say "sir, i dont know what it means!")
-What is VAT? (used terms like input tax rate and output tax rate to which he disagreed.... :argue:) went into more stuff on VAT.

P2: (decent bloke... took a washroom break during the interview!!! :-o)
-asked me about no work ex.
-hobbies
-what kinda books do u read? what sports do u follow... more on that.... general stuff...

note: no general awareness/current affairs based questions.... i expected a stress-int. but the panel was quite friendly.... allowed me to speak for quite a bit... not many interruptions from their side...

Here we were having avg 8-9 minutes of interview.

Your panel,balanced questions were asked.
3rd panel,mix of acads and other questions were asked.

There were 30 students in the morning batch.
We were divided in 3 Panels.
I was in panel 2.

We were asked to write on the topic 'A successful man is not one who has ability to eliminate problems before they occur,but who can face the difficulties as they arise and solve them'.(9 were present out of 10)
We were given 30 minutes to write 500 words essay on it.
The GD on the same topic started immediately after the writeup was taken from us.
It was a decent GD.Everybody had ample time to speak.There were 2-3 good speakers.
I made 3-4 entries.In the end we were steamed out of ideas.
Overall,no fish market and average one for me..:(Thought I could have spoken a few more times.

PI
We were called in the same order as we were called for GD sitting.
I was 5th in my panel for interview.
There were 2 people in the panel.A young lady(YL) and an experienced person(EP).

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:

Had the most peaceful IIM gd ever with just 6 people. People had no problems in letting others talk. Almost the whole discussion was for the topic. I spoke about hike in fuel price, outsourcing and the opposition to it. Made 4 or 5 points. The others spoke about nandigram, communists... One guy quoted the example of Chidambaram as to how good economics can also be good politics.

Other Salient Details: Essay for 30 min before the gd. We were asked at the end of 13 min to come to a conclusion.

I think I was in the panel which conducted stress interviews the previous day too

It started off with one person leaving the room as I entered and the other sighing that everyone who has come is a computer engineer!
Then he asked me to introduce myself, n then he asked about internet and how it works.
Then we discussed about communism and the difference between communism and democracy. They asked me about the naxalite movement and I didn't know much about it.
Then spoke about my current job and P2 asked me the difference between sustenance work (my current job) and maintenance work.

Now the best part .. Finally P1 asked me what question they can ask for which I know the answer. Then he asked me to ask myself a question and answer it He quickly added "a question related to why you want to join this programme". So having known the question now, I told him why I want to do the programme. He stopped me in between and said "that's enough. Call the next person".

I guess this is what is called 'stress interview'. Anyways.. time to prepare for the next one.

well, we had all the interviews of 15-20 minutes duration here...my panel was very kool nd receptive (you could talk about things you wanted to) while the other two panels were focussing on academics where one of the panelists was expert in software technologies (i ovrheard that )...

Me: talked of three reasons - 1. Presence of foreign players + 2. Coaching Methodology (shared a laugh over Steve Mclaren) + 3. not enough games for national players to gel together as a unit...brilliant individual performances but no efforts as a team...

the conversation had a nice flow...three "goods" and I believed I could fly!
was lucky to get the panel that wasn't screwing candidates on acads...
plus, there were 7-8 guys from my college...a few seniors and a few juniors as well...all toppers nd techie champs...again lady luck smiled and in my panel I was the only one from my college...
so all in all a good experience to begin with...good luck all for your GD/PIs...

Coming to thanking a post........I agre that u shdnt quote a long post. But in this case harish was trying to idnetify me and in a way we cud have get a better idea of a panel as hw they felt of our GDs and PIs (They were gvng feedback on our GDs in PI)

......Started explaining in layman term and was cut short to xplt in tech. terms...Told them No idea about tech, defintions

.....No idea
4. On what principle elct. motor runs
.....At this point i told that i am IT engineed and didnot have elect. subject. Was told that as an engineer i m supposed to know e.thing :popcorn:
5. What is FullForm of FORTRAN
.....No Idea
6. Why you didnot get a call from other IIMs?
.....Told the CAT Score as a reason
7. You have XXX amount with you. What you will do?
.....Told. Was grilled and laughed on
8. Divide your salary in diff. components based on your spendings
.....Told. Though not convincing.
9. Why you should percentage and not absolute value while dividing your salary.

I think this is my first useful post on this forum..
Here goes the chain of events.. I am giving it along with time beside the event.. BTW my interview slot is at 2:00 PM

1:30 - Reached the venue. ppl from the morning batch were still waiting to finish their interviews. There were 2 panels conducting the interviews. The topics for morning batches were "Business and Ethics do not go together"
and "India without IT is zero" .
2:00 - Interviews still in progress..
2:30 - One young Prof comes and tells that "we may take half an hour more" (May be they were having their lunch)
2:50 - We were called in to the room. we were given a sheet containing 4 pages with ruled lines.. and some instructions on it.. The GD topic is
"Should use of performance enhancing drugs in sports be legalised " . We had to write an essay for 30 mins
3:20 - Papers were taken back. An announcement was made - "You will have 15min to discuss. at the end of 13th min you will be asked to conclude for 2mins"

Now I will put down everything in the general format

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
We had a very good GD. every one was opposed to legalising drugs. everybody got good air time. ppl gave good examples.. and the GD was very stream lined.. we went adding points relevant to the discussion going on...

I could contribute well to the GD. added some points with good examples ..talked about ethics and about what kind of message we send to the future generations etc...

Mine was the second interview of the batch..very very short one..

most of the questions were asked by p1.

me: Good evening sirs
p1 : Give me your file. Take some burden off you.. He did browse through it but he did not see many certificates that were at the end of the folder. he looked at it for less than a minute.. (mean while p2 was looking at my data sheet(the one that we filled and submitted to them before gd)
me: thank you sir.
p1 : tell me something abt your self
me : started the regular stuff.. and could tell some +ve points abt me..
p1 cut me in the middle..
p1: okay ..this is regular stuff.. let us discuss some thing else..we will have a diff interview..
me: :)
p1: why were you born in hyderabad
me: (????) why? .. my parents were here.. so I was born here
p1: not this way.. tell me something else..that you can think abt this question
me: God wanted it to happen that way
p1: do you think god does this at random or ?
me: may not be random.. he intentionally does it
p1: how does he decide;
me: my personal opinion is that it depends on the previous life
p1: 0kay let's move on.. why do you want to do an mba?
me: regular stuff..
p2: (explaining to p1) he is trying to cut short all the time and wants to become a manager and then again wants to cut short the time taken to become a ceo by joining a small company...
me: no sir.. not really short cut.. but was stopped..
p2:why are you proud to be born in a telugu family??
me:blah blah...(talked abt culture values etc)
p1: two things which are important to you
me: ethics and respect to elders
In between I had 2 -3 questions on manager / leader and a bit abt how to make ppl work.

P1,p2 nod to each other..
p1: you may go now
me(standing): can I take the file sir?
p1: do you want it (all smiles)

Overall it was a feel good interview.. there were many instances where everyone was smiling...

Verdict: Convert

one point i would like to mention is please write your answers with questions in PI which ll help us to understand how the pi is driven by you..

Topic: Business and Ethics dont go together.

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:

First we were asked to write a essay on same topic in 500 words in 30 minutes. Then there was GD for 15 minutes. GD was a good one. Everyone got chance to speak.

GD topic for other grp was something like 'Without IT india growth will be 0%'. (i m not sure abt the topic)

PI:
There were two professors. Dont know abt them.

Questions -
1. BTech in ICT (IT and Communication). So what is Ad-Hoc Network, IPTV and protocol etc
2. Qns abt marks in x,xii and graduation. Reason for decrease.
3. Why MBA.
4. Why mba for entrepreneurship.
5. Entrepreneurship in which area. Abt that area.
6. I have done a course in 'Marketing'. So asked abt that. 4 'P' of marketing. Asked to implement 4 P in some example from the area i want to start firm.
7. Difference between cost and price.
8. Diff between GDP and GNP and few more question on that.
8. Abt work exp. What u do at job. ( Told abt Java and Database)
9. Asked me to write some SQL queries and some question abt object and class.
10. What is rural area. How do u differentiate with urban area. Some more question on this.
11. What special in IIM-L. How do u know it.
12. Why not Harvard. Give GMAT and go there.


Interview went on for abt 25-30 minute.

Is producing first pay slip and the latest pay slip enough? OR
Producing joining letter and the last pay slip will do?

OR

Producing proper work-ex certificate from the current job is compulsory?
