It has been a couple of days since the tragedy hit and the after effects are gonna be there for long . a lot of information has been provided by pgites too which is great . but i was wondering if any pgite in chennai or places close to tragedy are actually involved with relief work . i dont want to sound too critical , but howcome not even a single chennai memebr is involved voluntarily or involuntarily ( someone's friend / family member involved in relief work ) or even disccusing abt it .

If ppl from chennai or nearby places can get on ground and provide us with details abt some group which are directly involved with relief work , pgites can contribute . if pgites down under themselves can form a group , nothing like it , probably try to atleast discuss n meet reg this issue and see the logistics of something that can be done and surely pgites frm all india will come forward to see how they can help . what say pgites.

the least we could do is to skip a days meal and contribute some food for the needy...

gr8 thgt puneet....

Actually one of my frnds in chennai is collecting old clothes. She would be donating them to Lietunant Venkataraman, Theosophical Society.

The idea is take a carton, put all the clothes that u would like to doante, give it to me (or send directly to the society) & i will courier them to my frnd in chennai & she will give it to society.
Initially i have planned to donate 1000/- to PMNRF thru my company, but now i'm planning to pay courier bills.

regards,
ashish

How PG'ites can help ? - 29-12-2004, 06:35 PM

As all of know about disaster that happened due to the tsunami waves. Many have lost their lives and their property. It will be very helpful if we can give them our helping hands.

'The Theosophical Society' in Adyar, Chennai is around 125yrs old & is dedicated to charitable work. Visit this site for more details about the society http://www.ts-adyar.org/.

I talked with Mr Venkatraman & he said that they are getting a lot of help from various hands and most of them are clothing. So, it will be better if we can provide them with provisions (like rice packets, salt, sugar, milk powder etc.,), blankets, vessels, bedsheets, floormats, etc.
Apart from these things they also need a lot of funds to buy school books, uniforms (we cannot send them as they are child specific & need to b stitched).

What we can do is we can have people from each area of Mumbai who can collect contributions & than later we will collate everything & ship them to the NGO. e.g. Thane people can give it to me, Vashi people can send them to Simba, borivali people can give it to Alwyn.
Whoever is interested to contrbute can PM the corresponding co-ordinator from tht area.

Now we need people who can come from diff parts of mumbai who can act as co-ords. I think PG/simba/wayne can assign this work.

Now how to generate funds?
Most of us here are college going junta & don't earn. But should that stop you from contributing towards this cause. NO way...
You can go & sell old newspapers or "kabad" this weekend & channelise the collections towards relief - ur parents would be more than happy to c u cleaning the house & contributing towards the cause.

You can ask your frnds to do similiar exercise & raise the funds.
There could be other ways to generate funds... think on...
Take care that NO CASH will be accepted. Only Cheques/Drafts in favour of "Theosophical order of service" along with donor’s address are accepted.

People who cannot donate cash can collect clothes & other items of use & send the same to one of the area co-ordinator before 7th Jan 2005 (friday).

We can than collectively ship these contributions to the NGO by 8th Jan (Saturday).

Similiar initiative could be taken by Pune/Delhi/Hyderabad/B'lore people.

Please come forward with your contributions & suggestions.

Regards,
Ashish

hey puneet,

don't think it's fair to be so judgemental on chennai PG junta. In fact, it's hard to be left out of the relief scene in the city at the moment. Every NGO here seems to be involved in some way or the other, mass collection drives are happening on every street, some collecting clothes, some utensils, some money,...every second shop has got a big collection box placed in it for voluntary contributions. The college folks seem to have got into it in full swing too...I was in Coffee Day this afternoon and was swamped with college ppl distributing pamphlets and coming up with initiatives. In short, Chennai is really bustling with activity...quite inspiring, actually!

In such a scenario, I really don't think it would make sense for PG junta in Chennai to try to coordinate their efforts...just a waste of time and resources. We people from our office went to the affected areas today and distributed the essentials. Tomorrow, a team is planning to go to Nagapattinam. Iam sure all the Chennai PGites are already contributing in some similar method. So let's keep the momentum going that way.

For all the folks outside Chennai, so many avenues for contribution have already been mentioned in this thread. You could take your pick. From my side, let me add one more...

Selfless Movement Improving Life Everywhere (SMILE) is a service organisation actively involved in relief work here. They would more than welcome any contributions at the following address...especially clothes, blankets, utensils and the like.

New No: 16, TTK Road, I Cross Street, Alwarpet, Chennai * 600 018. Phone: (044) 2433 4700, 2433 1776, 2433 4895

or you could have a collection point in your cities and then send the collected stuff to me at

Jonas John
G9, Ramathilagam Flats,4th Street, IIT Colony,Narayanapuram, Pallikaranai, Chennai-601302 Ph-9840778355

and I'll do the needful.

So let's keep things moving guys and Puneet, don't worry, the spirit of service is alive and kicking in the city!
