I asked myself, “
Why do people smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs”? I did not find any answers by myself. But then I got so many answers after reading here and there and interacting with people. Hey all you people who smoke and booze, I have no hard feelings towards you. Just want to help you guys quit consuming such harmful substances, so please bear with me if you find me harsh at any point of time.
Since this thread is on smoking, I would emphasize on that.
The majority of young people begin with just trying. They want to ‘TRY’ what it like is to smoke or drink. That’s how they get trapped! The major factor that contributes to this is the environment. You are in a group of people who smoke, so you become a part of it (without using your common sense that it is bad and you should abstain from taking up such a harmful substance

. It then becomes a habit and soon you are addicted to it.
Well, of course there are many more reasons. Like, you are dam sad, had a fight with your mom/dad, broke up with your girlfriend/boyfriend, lost your job or things are really not working well with you and you want some ‘instant relief’ kind of a thing. You want relief! Read something inspirational, have a word with someone close to you. Instead of concentrating on your problem, do something to divert your mind. I know its not easy but do that at least for yourself. Use your wisdom instead of draining in emotions.
Other than this, if you take up smoking for stylish & attractive looks… think again..!! Smoking causes reduced oxygen supply to skin resulting in premature ageing and wrinkling. And, soon you are going to look oldie!
Smoking badly affects
your health (mind and body). It creates dullness, reduces energy level, damages thinking process, and hampers concentration. It promotes diseases like lung cancer, heart attack and stroke. Female smokers cant escape risky pregnancy. Their baby’s health is at stake. My cousin, almost six years elder to me, used to smoke and drink very heavily. I was in ninth standard when I used to warn her. She gave me a cold look and thought that I was one nagging kid. Today she’s carrying and that too after facing great difficulties. I guess, she realized what I meant eight years back. I am just keeping my fingers crossed and I wish everything is fine!
Other than physical, it causes
social and environmental problems.

Cigarette smoke contains highly poisonous gases which are extremely dangerous. Smoke ingredients include acetone (used as nail polish remover), ammonia (used in fertilizers, bathroom cleaners), benzene (causes cancer), cadmium (used to make batteries, causes liver, kidney and brain damage), carbon monoxide, formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies), hydrogen cyanide, lead (causes serious damage to brain, kidneys, nervous system and red blood cells), nicotine (makes cigarette addictive).
Moreover, you are spending
your hard earned buck to contribute to your poor health as well as that of other innocent creatures around you!
Smoking is not an adventure that will contribute constructively to your life. Smoking is actually a trap and once you are ensnared in that trap, your independence is stripped from you. You become bound by your emotions and your cravings for more of such substances.
But…If you determine to give up, YOU CAN QUIT! Its all in a state of mind and the strength of your resolve.
Become the master of your mind rather than letting your mind master you. Tell yourself everyday that you will give up smoking. Its only up to you. You have two options:
- give up and stay healthy
- continue with it and hamper your health as well as environment
I know that it might be dam difficult to implement and may be I cant explain any better because I am not in same situation as yours. But, believe me, no one can help you if you cant help yourself. Have a strong belief that you will give up and take action as early as possible. Try reducing the intake day by day, if not all of a sudden which is not practical enough.
