Toll in TN school fire mounts to 80

PTI[ FRIDAY, JULY 16, 2004 06:45:56 PM ]

KUMBAKONAM: Eighty children aged between 8 and 10 years were charred to death on Friday, 20 of them beyond recognition, while over 27 others received serious burns when a major fire ripped through their school in this town of Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district.

The dead included 27 boys, 33 girls and 20 others who were charred beyond recognition, District Magistrate J Radhakrishnan said, adding of the 27 injured admitted to hospitals, 15 were critical.

Most of the children died on-the-spot and were in the age group of eight to 10, the official, who was on the spot supervising the rescue operation, said.

The fire, which is believed to have started from the kitchen, when the noon meal for nursery children was being prepared, soon spread to a row of thatched roof classrooms where students from class one to class five were present, police and eyewitnesses said.

Five classrooms on the third floor of the Saraswati Nursery School were gutted in the fire that broke out at 11 am. Around 900 students were present in the Sri Krishna Girls High School complex housing primary, middle and high schools.

While the high school and middle school students escaped on noticing the fire, the nursery school children got trapped as the thatched roof collapsed on them making their movement difficult.

Radhakrishnan said that some victims died of suffocation as the exit passage was narrow.

Whats more shocking is ... NDTV reporter said .. the teachers were seen rushing off to save themselves than helping the students ..

Just wondering .. in such cases ,would we realy think about the others ??

according to REDIFF.COM

"Obedience to teachers appears to have played a key role for the high death toll in the fire tragedy that struck a school complex in the temple town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district. The toll is 80.

Police said most of the students did not move out of their classes after one of the teachers ordered them to remain in their places as the fire was 'too minor' and was being doused.

"Do not get panicky… remain in your place," was the teacher's command to the pupils who were ultimately trapped by the inferno.

this shows how innocent the kids are....dunno why god takes away the innocent and the young so early.

as lord krishna says in the gita :
"You cannot die nor can I. There was never a time when we did not exist. There will never be a time when we shall not exist. As in this life a man begins with childhood, and passes through youth and old age, so at death he merely passes into another kind of body."
taking these words to my heavy heart, i cud atleast lighten it a bit.......

may their souls rest in peace...

signing off with pain and anguish..............

A very sad incident and so much suffering... there are several schools like these which have ill planned layouts and narrow staircases and unsafe practices like cooking under thatched roofs

something that has saddened me to no small extent......and considering that i stay very close to where this actually happened....the videos that some of the local channels have telecast are, to say the least, horrifying......

Cheers

sad reality in life ... and the fact remains ... there are many such accidents waiting to happen . and then we see the politicians giving a visit to the place ... give cash to the parents and forget the hell about it like yesterdays news ... when was the last time concrete action was taken after such a tragedy to see it not to happen again ... NEVER ... and then u have our great media ... trying to show what happened and getting emotional about it too much ... i saw some reporters getting emotional n stuff ... i can understand that ... but how about showing the real thing ... did we see the real news related to the incident ...NO , do the news channel have the guts to show the real pictures of the incident ... NO ... that would certainly lead to something and then people will understand the real stuff and not fabricated news for everyone to see ... it may seem a bit too harsh but thats the problem with us ... we get too emotional with things ... its our nature .. There is no real news on the news channels we watch ...

I always wonder though .. does it help to show all these "LIVE" pictures of all tragedies ... rail accidents, fires, earthquakes ...

And the way our media handles these issues is pathetic...

Still remember ... some correspondent asking a distant relative of a victim of the fire ... " What do you think was the cause of the problem ?? "" ... will they care ?? for them .. one close to their family ....

But the best (err... worst) one was on Star News during the gujurat earthquake .. a person was found alive after 28 hours . . and there was a 5 - 7 interview with him still under the debris !!!

All this for live .. and up-to-date information and news !!!!
