Pratham Delhi Education Initiative
Every Child in School …. and Learning Well
BE A PART OF THE EDUCATION MOVEMENT!
Volunteers Needed for the Read Delhi Programme
Pratham is a nation-wide non-profit organization working in the field of primary education for underprivileged children. Pratham Delhi is conducting primary education summer camps throughout Delhi in the months of May and June’ 2004. This initiative will reach out to more than 35000 children in Delhi. The children will be in the age group of 6 -14 years and will include some children who have never been to school or have dropped out of school.
Pratham invites the citizens of Delhi to volunteer for the Read Delhi Initiative this summer. The Read Delhi Programme is an accelerated learning programme, which enables children to significantly improve their reading skills within only 6-8 weeks. Volunteers are required to come to summer camp on 10 days spread over two months. Volunteers are needed once a week on Thursdays and/or Saturdays in the months of May and June.
SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where is the summer camp going to be held? When will it start?
The summer camp won’t be held in a single geographical location. It’ll be held in buildings of more than 110 MCD schools across Delhi. This includes areas in West Delhi, North Delhi, City Zone (Central Delhi) and the Trans-Yamuna region. The summer camp will start on the 11th of May. All classes will run between 8 A.M. and 11 A.M. Monday through Saturday. Every school building will have 10-15 classes running at a time.
What is the Read Delhi Programme?
Read Delhi is an accelerated reading programme which enables kids to learn how to read at a very fast pace. The Read Delhi Initiative is a concentrated 7- week effort to reach out to those children who cannot read or do basic maths.
What is the volunteer work profile?
We urgently need volunteers as a part of the Social Audit Team. The work will entail the following:
1. Attesting and verifying that testing of children is carried out properly.
2. Ensuring that the learning and attendance levels of children are being reported accurately.
3. Ensuring that all the data generated during the summer camps is compiled and reported accurately.
4. Reporting whether the classes are running as planned.
5. Suggesting how to improve the programme and its implementation in the schools.
6. Encouraging community participation within the specific communities where the Read Delhi programme is being held.
It would help if social audit volunteers could come on Thursdays.
We also need Class Activity Volunteers who will organize extra-curricular activities for the children. This includes conducting quizzes, story-telling sessions, theatre, games etc. Class Activity Volunteers are needed on Saturdays. Social Audit Volunteers are most welcome to help with class activities too.
I want to volunteer, but I feel that I don’t have the time! What should I do?
We understand that time may be a constraint for some people who are willing to volunteer. Volunteers are required to come to the summer camps once a week over a period of two months. As a social audit volunteer you may also want to make a few surprise visits as well. All you are required to spend is about 3-4 hours on every visit you make to school building assigned to you.
How can I help?
1. Volunteer for the Read Delhi summer camps
2. Spread the word! If you can’t volunteer directly, then inform people who might be in a position to help out.
3. If you are student, get your institution involved. Senior school students and college students are most welcome.
4. If you are working in the corporate sector, get your company and colleagues involved as a corporate social responsibility initiative. We would like your company to partner us.
5. Help in raising financial resources for the Read Delhi Program. (Pratham Delhi has secured Section 80G and 35AC exemptions under the Income Tax Act whereby donors are entitled to income tax exemptions)
Why does Pratham need volunteers anyway?
We want the citizens of Delhi to get involved. And in a more direct manner than ever before. The education problem is huge. It’s sad but it is estimated that more than half the children studying Grade V in MCD primary schools cannot even read simple Hindi. Most children are therefore unable to stay in school and finally drop out of school. More than 40% children who enrol in Standard I drop out of school by Standard V. Here’s an interesting fact: Only 15-18% of Delhi children who enrol in Standard I ever make it past Standard XII!
We feel that the citizens being directly involved will add more energy to this programme. Plus, holding classes for 35000 children across the city is a huge management task. Pratham needs people to attest, assess and suggest better ways to manage the summer camps!
Who can volunteer?
The ‘social audit’ and ‘class activity’ volunteers can include senior school students, college students, people from the corporate sector, school teachers, researchers, academicians, members of other NGO’s, members of voluntary organizations, media persons, journalists, accountants, management consultants, IT professionals, engineers, housewives, serving and retired military personnel, government officials. You get the idea! Anyone who wants to make a difference is welcome to volunteer.
What's in it for me?
We promise that this experience will change your life. And you'll feel the impact of your participation within a few weeks. Often Delhiites complain that they want to improve their city but don't know how they can help. Well, here's your chance - A city-wide volunteer-based initiative that will touch the lives of thousands of kids! Unfortunately, being a non-profit organization, we can't pay our volunteers too much money. (Sorry!) But we realise that you will specially set aside a few hours every week in order to volunteer. We will certainly give you a letter/ certificate of appreciation for the time and effort you will put in for the summer camps. If you're a student and want to know how the non-profit sector works, this is a great opportunity to get some real hands-on experience!
Is there a deadline for registration?
There’s no particular deadline, but we’d appreciate it if you register with us early. The camp has already started on the 11th and we are still well short of the required number of volunteers. So please hurry!!!
