I think we should go by either of the two ways:-
1) Putting up our queries here and helping out each other with various types of questions.
2) Taking one area at a time and moving to the next only when the current one is over and has covered all(almost) types of questions under it.

What say puys?
i think,we should allow puys to put up questions.even if we start dividing, some newbie can always restart an old discussion.that would defeat the purpose.
also, there is an existing concepts and fundas thread.we can use that,to suggest new methods,strategies,shortcuts,etc.etc.

all the best puys.

i think problems will not come in a systematic way so let the thread be free for problems but you can surely fix days and dates so that specific topics could be covered in detail.
and whatever problems come to puys the can be posted and can be solved side by side

Yep..okay then...we sud start right away i think. How about posting some questions which were there in this years' paper itself? M in office so no access to my question paper but if sm1 can post some questions, we can have some solving nd discussion now.

I agree.. we can ask PG admin for QQAD...twas quite a hit last time around. I have an archive of all of them. Will be posting form it regularly.

Again, I request those who have scored high in this section , please guide us as to how to go with the prepns....May be they can themselves give us some practice questions as of now...wat say?
Implex and other puys?

Regards,
Navneet

P.S.:-I dont want to post another philosophical post(though m very good at it). I want the discussions to start right away. Puys please tell other aspirants abot this thread so that they can get here.

Here are some questions from CAT'08

Q.1 Consider obtuse angled triangles with sides 8 cm,15 cm,x cm. If 'x' is an integer ,then how many such triangles exist?
1.5 2.21 3.10 4.15 5.14

Q.2 What is the number of distinct terms in the expansion of (a+b+c)^20?

1.231 2.253 3.242 4.210 5.228

My takes:-

Ans 1.
answer is 3) 10

15+8 = 23
So third side can be atmost 22 as 15+8 > 22
Also 22+8>15 and 22+15>8
Now for the lower limit of third side,
15-8=7
So we can have 8 as the minimum value of 3rd side as 8+8=16>15
So, values are..
8,9,10,11,12,........20,21,22

i.e. a total of 15 values.
however, we have to take only those values for which the triangle will be obtuse.

so it sud be like a^2 > b^2+c^2
for values lesser than fifteen.

15^2=225
8^2=64
x^2< 225-64
or x^2<161

so x can have values:-
8,9,10,11,12

Again for values of x>15

15^2+8^2<x^2

i.e. x^2 > 225+64
or x^2 > 289

so x can have following values,

18,19,20,21,22

total of 10 values.

Answer 2.
Could not solve...perhaps lack of practice of binomial theorem.
Someone else wud like to solve.

Q2)

Number of distinct terms is same as number of integer solutions to a+b+c = 20

so, (20+3-1)c(3-1) = 22c2 = 231

Navneet see it this way.....

in (a+b)^2 there are 3 terms (a^2,b^2,2ab)
which is also equal to no. of non negative integral solutions of equation
a+b=2
1st soln a=2,b=0 (here 2 and 0 can be taken as the powers in expansion)
2nd soln a=0,b=2
3rd soln a=1,b=1

So.....for (a+b+c)^20 no of terms in the expansion is the no. of non negative integral solutions of a+b+c=20
which is equal to 20+3-1C3-1

this is how i deduced the answer in actual CAT
