Re: Xtreme Maths - 28-12-2006, 05:32 PM

If it is the latter(posting good quesns) then lemme start with two of mine

1)If x<1 then prove that

(1-2x)/(1-x+x^2) + (2x-4x^3)/(1-x^2+x^4) + (4x^3-8x^7)/(1-x^4+x^ + ....................infinitely = (1+2x)/(1+x+x^2)

2)Two points are taken at random on the given straight line AB of length 'a'. Prove that the probability of their distance exceeding a given length 'c' (<a) is equal to (1-c/a)^2.

I believe it should be both.

Discuss topics like
1. Coordinate Geometry - Ellipse, Parabola, hyberbola
2. Trigonometry - Inverse Trigonometry
3. Calculas - Functions, Limits,Diffrentiation, Integration, Diffrential Equation, Area under the curve
4. Vectors
5. Complex numbers
6. 3-D geometry
7. Binomial theorem
8. Probability
9. Induction
10. Convergence and Number series

and all other topics which we have studied in 12 but just lost the touch.

Let the party begin

Varun , this thread will not be limited by the MBA stuff ...I am planning to touch high levels of maths ..Thats y i have told ..participate only at ur own discretion .

Remember the mindblowing thread started by sumit khanna ...We can make this thread start on the same lines ....Discuss concepts ... and solve olympiad level questions at ease ...

In short we will try to do R&D and explore the beauty of the subject .

Hope the purpose of the thread is clear to you

I felt intimidated by the title of this thread. Will try to keep pace with you all. Take my contribution to this thread from this question.

Let a, b be whole numbers such that ab = 72. Let a^b denotes a raised to the power of b e.g. 4^3 = 64. For what b does b^(a^1/2) takes the max value?

(a) 6 (b) 8 (c) 9 (d) none

(a) 6 (b) 8 (c) 9 (d) none

take a= 72/b and sub in second eq y = b^(a^1/2). Take log on both sides and diff

we get b= e^2 ( b= 7.46 and a = 9.64) and b= 1

obviously we have min at b= 1 and max at b= 7.46

so any of 6 and 8 can give max

b=6 a= 12 a^1/2 = 3.46 y= 492
b=8 a=9 a^1/2 = 3 y= 512

so max at b= 8

Kudos to you for your solution :-)

I'm happy by the initiatives taken by some of you to start this thread, but if possible please change the title of this thread. Don't scare the newbies

Continue and Enjoy :-)
