I second that. Know the word in the context of its usage. That's all that is necessary to crack CAT. Picking up the dictionary to memorize it won't be of too much help. You can actively use that time somewhere else.

but dont you think that knowing the word in the context of the usage also requires knowing the meaning of that word. So the question is how to go about it? Do you really think that it is better to use that time in reading some well written literature/articles???

There really is no point in mugging up word lists. They don't serve any purpose at all and for CAT in particular. Shubham, you are right about using the time to read some books/articles. A good vocabulary can't be developed overnight, it is cultivated over a period of reading good books.

Read the editorial page of your newspaper everyday. Also, it helps if you read magazines dealing with current affairs. This helps two ways- improving your vocabulary and your grammer. Both are of importance not only with the point of view of CAT but also in professional line too.

You can also sign up with www.wordsmith.org (it's free) where they email one new word a day. It's extremely informative - they mention the root of the word, usage etc. I think it is an excellent website.

Absolutely. A good vocabulary is cultivated over a long-term period. And there's one thing that I've personally done, I've had a bit of fun with it, it's helped the cause too: The key to knowing the word is ofcouse usage. Now, you may not get the chance to use the word in conversation, but try to use the word in your thoughts. This way, if the usage isn't right, it kind of rings a bell, it just wouldn't sound right. Atleast that's how I've felt.

Absolutely correct...can't expect to use the Barron's words in day-to-day conversations anyway.. hence use them while talking to yourself.. if in case you do..

Hi

I think One can start with regular reading of not just of newspapers which u will be doing, but of content-based magazines like Computers ytoday, business India, Filmfare, sportstar, s o that u r acquainted with any subject.

If u not an avid reader u cant anything now in 5-6 months. Nothing to discourage anyone but working hard can do antything for u!!

An IMS list of word comes. Get it today and do atleasty 15-20 words daily and try to make sentence so that u can apply and remember well Atleast till CAT!
