Yes thats right .. But its combination of factors !
factors according to me ,
slowing domestic economy, European debt crisis and lastly high interest rates
@87ln : it takes 1 second to groan but takes lot of time to post (though my post appeared rubbish to you )

nagabhai .. why are high interest rates responsible for weakening the INR ? IMO high interest rates have led to loans becoming dearer - hence consumption has gone down. Rates have also increased the cost of raising capital for industries hence pressurizing their margins. Inflation and shortage of raw materials would've led to a drop in production output but the link b/w rates and weakening rupee isn't very clear to me ..
I guess these are very basic inferences .. but plz correct me if I'm wrong ..

Naga thala.. higher interest rates should help the currency not devalue it.. as pointed out retry, higher interest rates make the currency dearer.. hence its value should appreciate.. the downward spiral of our currency is despite this and not because of this.. the downward spiral can be attributed to the instability of the euro zone.. those trading in the currency markets are shorting the rupee and buying the dollar instead.. its a case of the dollar becoming stronger and the rupee becoming weaker and hence the exaggerated downward spiral.. rupee becoming weaker -- factors .. government slow on reforms.. lackluster industrial performance..open invitation by the RBI to short the rupee in the currency market by telling that it will not support the rupee.. dollar becoming stronger -- factors .. relative instability in the world economy.. hopeless euro crisis..
Indonesia also faced this problem about 3 months back.. but their central bank shorted dollar heavily in the currency market and maintained their value.. there have been arguments and counter arguments against the non-interference stance taken by the RBI..

To add to the factors, High Inflation rates.I guess High interest rates are actually a consequence of the High Inflation India has been facing for quite a while.
Retry: I guess we can continue our chit-chat about economy and stuff here!
