The reason - 30-06-2004, 01:15 PM

Hi
Having had good interaction with people from all over the country i will chip in the reason for this.

It is the simple- translation of exam dena in Hindi.
So a few of us give exam while the rest take exams.

Mother Tongue Infulence of a different kind....
ciao

I love nitpicking. I think the some junta on the Bangalore PG meet were witness to it

Another fav is the one where people ask for tissue "paper" (sic) at restaurants. It is a paper napkin. A tissue (no "paper") is also used for stuff like Kleenex. But again this is not the ones they give in restaurants. It is a paper napkin.

I like redundant sentences.

Arun

And till date I thought, "writing an exam" is as correct a form of usage as "taking an exam"... and no, I aint Telugu... nor do I hv any Telugu influence on my English...

I think 'giving an exam' means to 'examine somebody' while 'taking an exam' means 'to be examined oneself'.

as for writing & taking an exam, 'taking' seems to be more like it.

what could possibly be the diff b/w 'giving an exam' and 'conducting an exam'?

well... well... the title and the first post are in perfect synergy i would say!!! if you don't feel bad using the above language, why don't you accept usages like "give CAT" or "take exam", which are embraced by thousands across the country? it should be perfectly acceptable...
