Guitar Discussions - For Interviews - 03-02-2009, 12:48 PM

Hi Puys,
I have been thinking of creating a thread wherein we can discuss interview questions pertaining to music, guitars or guitarists. There are so many people who have been playing guitar as a hobby or have engaged themselves in bands and all. Now when it comes to interviews, sometimes the interviewer may ask questions pertaining to music that a person may have never thought of. There are many instances when a person knows to play guitar but when it comes to BASIC music theory, he is unable to answer. I have been playing guitar for the last 3 years and i know in the initial years it is all about finger (playing chromatic scale) and rythms exercise. Its that music theory makes more sense when you have atleast mastered how to handle the instrument.

I can quote one instance when i was asked few questions pertaining to music like "what is octave?". Fortunately, i was able to answer it. But i feel when you say "My hobby is xyz", you must know everything about it or at least more than what the interviewer knows.

So, lets discuss some questions related to bands, guitars, guitarists, music theory. I hope this try to benefit some of us.

Moderators- if you feel the thread will not serve any purpose you may please take any action.

I honestly dont feel such ques will be asked ...

still to ans the above question-

The formula for a major scale is

(R) W W H W W W H (R)

(R) = root note

W = whole step ie interval of two notes or simply put two frets

H = iinterval of 1 note or half step or 1 fret..

so C major scale will start with

C(Root) --D---E---F---G---A---B-- C(root in the next octave)

These r some f da questions which were asked to me at certain mock interviews nd my own campus interview (Mindtree consulting )

1)How many tabs r dere ?:eyepop:
2)what is a chord !!
3)Who's ur fav. band / artist?
4)Second fav.(i had said pink floyd , was asked whom i liked in it (Roger Waters ofcourse ))
5)What all can u play ! (IIMA graduate had asked me dis , nd apparently she ws mad bout pink floyd nd i told her i can play cmin back to life nd she ws lyk wow )
6)Which is the first chord on the guitar ?[Holy shit , i ws lyk u can play any chord anywhere .. i told him i can play E major probably from 10 places ]

7) this i think , can be asked ! (what is da mechanism of da production of sound )

That's all from myside , m done

valid point by insanebot!

I think we can expect sound related questions from science point of view...specially for ppl who are science grads or studied science in 12th
Some of the ques would be -
1) Principle of sound production in guitar
2) At what frequencies (in Hz) are the 6 strings tuned ?
3) some thing abt harmonics, overtones, octaves

Music theory related ones are highly unlikely..

Some other general ques are possible -
1) What is the diff betn electric and acoustic guitar?:sarcasm:.....(just the way a mech engg is asked diff betn petrol eng and diesel engine )
2) Which brand of guitar do u own? Something abt the company .. or why that brand over some other brand?
3) Some thing about the kind of music that u play and ur influences ?

I can think of only these .. pls add if u think of any thing else

Cool.. guitarists rock !!

they could ask on the theory on sound production on a guitar. vibration of strings from physics perspective.
f=(1/2L) sq.rt(T/u)
where f=frequency of vibration
L=effective length of string
T=tension in the string (approx. abt 6kg per string on an electric guitar)
u= linear density of string (max for low E n min for high E)

they could ask on fundamental frequency n harmonics
basically when we paly a note, the string vibrates in several frequencies. the sound we here corresponds to the fundamental frequency which is the loudest when played normally.

they sould ask how to make other frequencies louder..

ans would be harmonics. natural as well as artificial harmonics. we could explain how to play them..

then basic questions like types of guitar.
acoustic n electric guitar. theory behind both.. acoustic based on reverberation.. electric guitar on electromagnetic induction.

from here they could move to electronics/ electrical engineering. electronics? oh.. yeah.. i'm on..
