Hi, Soumik da , hope u r well...i m talking 2 u after couple of weeks ......
I have query ..though it is not directly related with GD/PI ..

I was reading through the profile of final call converters of IIM where I found that most of those students have suggested to develop any specific interest from the beginning so that we can talk about at large during the interviews.I myself have not done good result in this year CAT and plan to give it a shot next year. That is the reason i am contemplating about building any specific interest.I am from eceltronics engg. backgroud. i do not also have excellent extra curricular activities .So plz give me any kind of suggestion about what to take up.
bye.

Soura

Good to have you back.

Apparently,
there are many people who "develop" new interests just for the interview and it will be caught by a good panel the moment you open your mouth. It may work for some if they can fake the entire stuff that this thing that you have done, you are very much attached and would like to go ahead exploring more on this.

I have interviewed people who took up photography as an interest for the PI just because they felt it sounded cool as well. THis is a problem in India, and I will ask you not to fall for this. I may sound revolting, but this is a fact. The panel is smart enough to catch the flaw.

My suggestion however to you would be to look inward and see if there is really something that you are interested in. You do not have to look into your extra-culs for this alone. An interest maybe something like Gardening. But if you say that, then you are supposed to get questions like soil formations, manure for certain plants, grafting, etc.

Get back to me with what you think is your interest areas. We can then discuss further.

Cheers.

mind you this one should be and must be done no matter whether u go for an mba or not..it is for ur personal satisfaction friend....

5.touring.....the best possible option....go roam wherever u want to...if u love solitude....then it is much more wonderful as good thoughts often come when u r alone... retrospect , realize and rejuvenate....as simple as that.

6.
learn playing music instruments.....if u r good at singing it wud be an added advantage...in case nt dnt ever try to do that in frnt of the panel(just kidding..)

7.blogging....its one good platform to share ur thoughts with the world....mind you a good number of A++ bschool students have blogging as their hobby...

Hi Soumik,

Very useful thread indeed.

I would like to ask what to do in a situation when 1 or 2 among the group keep on speaking without letting others to speak. How to bring up your point of view?

Thanks.

Re: Survival Tips for B-School GD-PI Processes - 04-02-2009, 09:29 PM

Hi

Sorry for answering late.

Congrats on all your calls. I hope that you clear all the calls and then get to choose the Institute where you intend to go to.

a) If you are asking for GD pointers, then you can go through my initial posts wherein I have mentioned some of the stuff that I know of GDs from my experiences. In case you need anything more after going through those posts, please get back to me on this. In case you are reading up on Current affairs, you have done 40% of the job. I will also ask you to kindly take up certain economic definitions (related ones in today's world) like Malthusian Economic prophecy, Keynes theory and corollaries of the same, Macro and Micro economic factors, Effect of the Obama relief package, South Asian countries and their economic growth, etc.

b) I do not know of anyone right away who gives private tuitions. Anyways, going for some mock sessions in bigger institutes help you to be aware of the competition that you may face real-time. You can ask for a demo session in each of them atleast.

c) I guess what you mean to become is an Entrepreneur, who will take advantage of prevalant and future market conditions, technologies, and may even build a product/service that will change the face of a certain industry. Family business waley ko Entrepreneur nahi kehlate hai. The right word is Businessman. Add to that the fact that you would have to follow a set pattern for many years before even thinking of any diversions. You will have to prove your mettle in something that you may NOT like in the First Place.

I guess I could clear most of it. Incase you have further queries, please get back to me.

Cheers.

Hi

See, every GD flow represents a Sinusoidal Curve (hope i got the spelling correct). It actually denotes a curve that goes up and then comes down below zero to again go up to the previous high.

Now the lows of this graph are the points wherein anyone can enter a discussion, because after sometime these vociferous people will run out of points and will then argue on silly things. Your job will be to look at other and get them involved into something that will draw these revolting people (1/2 of them) to listen and be a part of the team. These are people who juct cant be out of action. So if they see that the team is talking to you, they will have to stop whatever they are doing and understand whats actually happening.

This is where you can score brownie points. This is where you will not have to shout but make some calculated moves like involving the others into a mini discussion that will grow into the larger discussion. Got that??

Cheers.
