Chakrabir, I'm sorry to disagree with you, but I am strongly in favour of coaching for the following reasons:
1. Organized approach - If a topic, say, Number systems is discussed on Sunday, you can then focus on number systems for the week, and prepare systematically. The teachers can guide you on what kinds of questions there are, what is the expected number of such questions, and what shortcuts one can apply to solve.
2. Peer interaction - It is always good to know what others think, and do. A peer may come up with a faster/shorter/foolproof way of solving a problem that no book/website has taught. Also, during class quizzes and discussion sessions, one's brain often works faster, to beat the competition.
3. Pressure! - There is that subconscious knowledge that time is ticking by. Otherwise, on one's own, it is easy to lapse into a cocoon, and feel everything is right. One doesn't get as many reality checks, you know.
Also, I don't really advocate multiple test series. It's not just about taking tests, and then jumping with joy or hitting your head against a wall after seeing the results. One needs to spend at least 4-5 hours per test, analyzing. So, if you take two tests a week (6 hours), and spend 10 hours analyzing them, when do you study?? In my opinion, a test a week is sufficient. However, on holidays, and other off days, you can take sectional tests, or the mock tests that you get as part of the 'take-home' package.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. I think it worked pretty well for me, but may/may not work for everyone. So, all the best!
