My sincere suggestion would be to go for a test series instead of a full time coaching ... no doubt it helps in maintaining a tempo of your preparation but sometimes u also tend to get bogged down by the huge amount of material and sometimes the faculty are also not that good (exceptions are there)

I dint crack CAT ... but looking back i feel that a test series with a thorough analysis of each test and working on the weaknesses helps a lot!!

Wish you all the best

Re: Coaching classes for CAT ?? - 11-03-2008, 11:21 PM

I'll be appearing for CAT 2008.Its been ages since I did anything remotely mathematical.I need to go some place where I can brush up on my maths skills(along with the rest,of course!!) without the usual furore or rush gush. I stay in Chembur, Mumbai.Which of the IMS classes should I join?I dont mind bit of a travel if it eases the cause.

Any pointers?
Thanks!!!

I feel coaching classes help by providing a more organised approach to preparation. Moreover, through regular interaction with peers and faculty, one can learn multiple ways of solving the same problem, and select the best. Plus, you constantly keep getting that push to do better and better.

Of course, it can't really be generalized - depends from person to person, but broadly, I think coaching classes are helpful, especially the mock tests. But, ultimately it is your own focus and hard work which will make sure that you clear all hurdles.

ROCK ON!

i believe that u dont need any coaching for polishing ur skills
coaching is for concept building and when u have good percentage in CAT i think u need to go only for test series.

IMHO u should go for atleast 2 different test series cos goin for one will limit u to a particular pattern of question.
u can do revision at home ........... no need of goin to coaching

Chakrabir, I'm sorry to disagree with you, but I am strongly in favour of coaching for the following reasons:
1. Organized approach - If a topic, say, Number systems is discussed on Sunday, you can then focus on number systems for the week, and prepare systematically. The teachers can guide you on what kinds of questions there are, what is the expected number of such questions, and what shortcuts one can apply to solve.
2. Peer interaction - It is always good to know what others think, and do. A peer may come up with a faster/shorter/foolproof way of solving a problem that no book/website has taught. Also, during class quizzes and discussion sessions, one's brain often works faster, to beat the competition.
3. Pressure! - There is that subconscious knowledge that time is ticking by. Otherwise, on one's own, it is easy to lapse into a cocoon, and feel everything is right. One doesn't get as many reality checks, you know.

Also, I don't really advocate multiple test series. It's not just about taking tests, and then jumping with joy or hitting your head against a wall after seeing the results. One needs to spend at least 4-5 hours per test, analyzing. So, if you take two tests a week (6 hours), and spend 10 hours analyzing them, when do you study?? In my opinion, a test a week is sufficient. However, on holidays, and other off days, you can take sectional tests, or the mock tests that you get as part of the 'take-home' package.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. I think it worked pretty well for me, but may/may not work for everyone. So, all the best!
