This is the Q we should ask ourselves, and this is also the most sought after Q in the MBA interviews,So i feel like starting a thread dedicated to it, where we can post the general overview in the field of our interests.A freind of mine when asked MBA in which field said finance , then was asked about basic things in it, but was not able to answer.
To avoid this situation with us,We should post some basic principles in evry field of specialization, this will help us a lot.
Seniors in B-schools inputs from you are awaited.
p.s: Mods please closed if any other thread realted to it exists. The darkest night is before dawn. Finance- deals with Basics of balance Sheet analysis with ratios, Corporate Banking [ various short term and long term funds], investment banking, cost accounting etc. Marketing- Purely marketing [ sales , distribution, market research, a bit of advertising] Human Resources- Organizational Behaviour , conflict management , man management, Organizational Structure and design etc Operations- a company's operational aspects like layout of the firm , Quality Management , TQM , TPM etc Informational Techonology- the various business aspects related to IT. Business improvements due to ERP etc.
these are the basic branches of specialization that various reputed B- Schools have to offer.. Apart from this colleges like NMIMS give an option of Actuarials [ towards statistics etc] , Retail [ dont have much idea abt it] FOR EVERY PROBLEM , THERE'S A SOLUTION.. lets take Reliance itself.. Finance ppl will have to look after its funds management , asset management, then if the company is going to go for an IPO , or rights issue - they gotto decide what shld be number of shares to be issued , the price of each share / right. Window dressing of the balance sheet and defend that before the auditors, project viability studies etc.. Marketing wld be more of a front end job. say do a research/ survey whether a particular product wld say suite the South-Indian market, how do ppl perceive that product. how do theu go abt the logistics etc. wat shld be the sales target they need to achieve and wat improvements they need to bring in their distribution system to achieve a better sales.. wat shld be the number of dealers , their margin etc.. Operation relate more to the manufacturing side but yes it is present in all industry sectors as well.. mainly handling the day to day activities..
deciding on quality rating to be followed.. I wld dare to say operation is more of a back end job compared to the rest. its more like a on the floor job [ ie u wont get the luxury of Ac cabins] HR has gained lots of significance in today's time.. mainly being to reduce the attrition rate, keeping ur staff happy , recruiting ppl [fresh and laterals] , retaining talent. the various HR policies has to be defined by them [ anything and everything under the sun like harassment avoidance etc, rewards system, performance ratings etc] IT whether a particular new technology is needed for the company , wld it be fruitful with respect to improving the core competency of the company say Reliance . will it improve the profitability , ROI etc. Is installing the system feasible?? wld the staff accept it and use it etc...
ultimately if u check without one the other specialization cant work..
hope these answers ur doubts. FOR EVERY PROBLEM , THERE'S A SOLUTION.. OFTEN V TEND TO FORGET THIS PRIMARY FACT FORE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT PGDM [2007-09] | | | | | The Following 4 Users Say Thank You to ARUN2485 For This Useful Post: | | | | | |
