Ok guys.. 6 of us have expressed an interest in an online GD possibility. We need more people to join in. If atleast a dozen express interest, half would be seen online at a time. What say ?

Hi all,
Here I propose a topic to be discussed in the group. Some rules to be followed:
1)Please express your views in not more than 10 sentences at a time.
2)Once you have expressed your views , wait for others response.
3)Try to hang around the topic.

Topic:
The Council on Competitiveness summed up the vision of the information infrastructure of the 21st century as follows: "The information infrastructure of the 21st century will enable all Americans to access information and communicate with each other easily, reliably, securely and cost-effectively in any medium -- voice, data, image or video -- anytime, anywhere. This capability will enhance the productivity of work and lead to dramatic improvements in social services, education, and entertainment."

How should a future-oriented professional program prepare information professionals for a future in which this vision is realized?

Response:
Because the future is so uncertain, focusing on knowledge alone is no longer sufficient. Schools should concentrate on preparing professionals on not only how to adjust to constant change but to take a leadership role in bringing it about.

In broad terms, I think education should prepare information professionals to be flexible, visionary, people-oriented, and willing to take chances. They will need to understand the basics of relevant technology and, equally important, know how to keep current with changes in technology, even anticipatory about changes. They must be able to take leadership roles and have the ability not only to work with people but be able to persuade people to work with them and in groups.

To accomplish this, schools will need to become more interdisciplinary. Courses in technology are already being taught, but added to that should be courses that teach and/or encourage effective communication, persuasion, risk-taking, flexibility, and positive thinking. The latter is an absolute must,in my opinion.

I realize that this is not specific to today's course work, but I think we need to look for the qualities in our candidates that will enable them to become the information professionals described above. Then we look for ways of instilling them with this knowledge and skill.

C'mon pal, I dont know why there are no replies to this topic. Lets try and go for topics which have occured in actual GDs at the IIMs.

Ok, this one is from IIM Kolkatta:

The topic is

TV Commercials should be banned

Take your shot at the topic. Max 5 sentences. That's the max you'd get to talk in a GD in a flow. Or just start brainstorming and type out points as to pros and cons and different perspectives. Once you all start typing some stuff here, we'll decide the course of the discussion

TV Commercials even though they are part and parcel of free market economy, are abhorable enough due to following reasons
1) Coz they are getting increasingly vulgar/referential which hurts sentiments of society which might be insulated to West's paradigms of liberal statutes.
2) Most of the primetime is hogged by "best-sellers"/"market leaders" further which attenuates other players'/would be players' share in market, hence robbing public of a better product.
3) Sometimes wrong/misleading/factually incorrect messages may dupe customer into buying the product.
4) Most of the Ads are discrimintary in nature, for instance Anorexic Models are shown
endorsing product, or say some of the Ads over(I am not talking obese) people are looked upon.

Let us dig into the reasons as to why ads came into existence. The advertisements on TV are the main source of revenues to the broadcasters. Banning advertising would make sure that most channels go bust. Ads also educate. There are many public service announcements in the form of ads on TV, which help in educating the public. Ads allow us some "breathing" time, else we would have to be stuck watching the television without a break lest we miss the continuity of the story.
