Tht's something even I use to wonder abt...but finally have an inkling abt the diff.

Computer Science :-
Computer Science is a discipline that involves the understanding and design of computers and computational processes.Deals indepth abt hardware/configurations and software and operating systs and all the techie crap!

Computer Application :-
Apply computer science and technology to solving problems outside the computer field-in education or medicine, for example. Gives u an overview abt computers and all tht goes with it i.e deals with all the above mentioned stuff with a barge pole and is more focussed on how to apply these stuff for practical purposes.

Though in my 3 yrs of study, hardly found anything tht dealt with the 'application' part.Studied abt OS,N/W,Languages,MIS,Web Prog,Hardware et al.It was all like introduction abt these topics and lil on the application part.

And one BIG diff......BCAs have more fun then their Comp sci peers!

Everyone plays THE big gamble of their life, but once. Have you put yourself at stake yet?

Hi,

Me a BCA University ranker from Hyderabad.

I did BCA in 2002 and had few close B.Sc (Comp. Science) friends. My take on this is below:

Comp Applications deals a lot with something like Information Management. Few of the subjects which I had during my course:

1. C++ 2. Java 3. Oracle 4. System Ana & Design 5. E- Commerce

6. S/W testing & mngmt. 7. UML 8. Obj Oriented Ana & Design

9. Unix Programming 10. Unix Sys Adm.

These were the core subjects which we had and only C++ & SAD was included in Comp. Science.

Some of the major subjects they had were:

Mathematics I and II
Statistics I and II
Pascal
Microprocessor design.
Computer Organisation and Architecture
Cobol, Fortran, C etc.
Sys Ana & Design

So BCA is buoyed more towards the very practical implementation of IT in the current scenario, whereas Comp Science ppl build their base on the initial core technologies and work in that field.

B.Sc. candidates were not too focussed on job imm after B.Sc. and look for either MCA to learn the latest technologies like VB/Java/Oracle etc and then look for campus or move on to do MSc Comp Science or MBA.

Hope this helps...

Best of Luck...
