How Much Is Enough For Cat - 26-04-2006, 06:39 PM

Hiii all u ppl at pagal guy...
I am a new entry to this great site...
Well to say I am Ravi Manoram from DCE .....
My query here is how much is enough for CAT.....
THis question does become relevant in the sense that I am due completing my 1st yr at DCE and have truely realized that engg is not a proffession for me coz as a coder decoder in a software firm wont survive me...
I have plenty of time here... to develop my CV and make make it a grand one.........
The problem is how much is enough..we at DCE get plenty of curricular activites..
so my questions are as follows..
1. what sort of curricular activities make a GRAND impact at the IIM entrance procedure..
2.What role does ones marksheet have for the above said thing...
3.I am in the IT branch.so how much of software languages should I do that should be enough for the campus placements as well as I will be able to balance to balance with curricular activities...
4.what extra do u think I should do for CAT and from when..
I am asking these coz to have a good curricular activities record one does have to sacrifice on studies....
So I wud ask the successful junta at the IIM this yr to please solve my query
and give me solid guidance...ppl form engg colleges(specially from DCE wud be a great help)
Also congratulations to success icons at the IIMs this yr..happy rigourous days ahead...

You wanted a DCE senior you got one
You say that you have just completed your first year and you are worried bout CAT
Well as far as the resume building goes i woudl advice you to participate in the tech fests and sports tournaments but whatever you do do not let your academic profile sag cos lemme tell you that a good academic performance will stand you in good stead everywhere.
Just one doubt DCE ka tradition kahe ko kharab karta hai yaar, exams se do din pehle pad, number laa, fest main certi le aur aish kar. Dont worry bout things like these cos you gotta clear the first hurdle to get to the gd/pis where your profile would matter to some extent.

Hi!! One more DCE senior for u Ravi.........i fail to understand how u cud have ascertained in the first yr itself that ur not made for a s/w job.As far as i can remember, the first yr has mostly subj like Phy,Chem etc which cant be called Engg subjects..........IT is an exciting field and i would advise you to wait for the end of ur 5th sem to come to a conclusion.........
And not wanting to go for a s/w job is not a gud enuff reason to do an MBA, frankly..........I guess its just too early to decide ur plans after engg.......
In terms of profile, i second wat bugs said, take part in sports tournies and tech fests..........but do enuff to justify ur interest or contribution.........otherwise u'll be torn apart in the interview...........just dont collect certis right, left and centre for the sake of it
And a caveat............even if u have stellar extracurriculars, sometimes the panel is only interested in ur responses and body language........
So, chill maro abhi..........think abt CAT when ur in the 5th sem

Hey Ravi,
to get through to the IIMs, you do NOT need to take up extracurricular activites which make a grand impact ...In fact there is no such thing as 'extracurricular activities which make a grand impact'....you take up the activities which you like, follow them sincerely and with dedication and project them properly while applying. One more thing....Just 1 year in engg has been enough to make you realize that you are not suited for it....make sure you know what an MBA is all about before you take the plunge...

thr is a lot of time before u can seriously start preparing for cat boss..so i think it wud b bettr if u concentrate on ur studies at present and maintain a good percentage..it plays a very imp role in admission process..thr r very few peopl who get into iim's with very less percentages(even decent percentages)..so start liking ur engg subjects and develop ur overall profile..extra curriculars r a definite bonus...so participate in as many things as possible in coll or outside..they wont take much of ur time anyway.....

all the best
