Gudmorning Junta
Here is a question which I like while in CL workshop.Might be helpful to you.
If I see good response then I would post Overall Solution by tomorrow evening.Do give explanations for the option chosed.
In each question there given two statements followed by 4 conclusions. You have to take the two given statements as true, even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follow from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.
SYLLO 1
1)Statements
Some berries are not fruits.
All berries are round.
Conclusions
a)Some fruits are not round objects.
b)Some round objects are not berries.
c)Some fruits are berries
d)Some round objects are fruits.
Choices
1)Only I follows
2)Only I and IV follows
3)Only I and II follows.
4)Only II and III follows
5)None follows.
All the best

The answer should be 1, because one premise is negative so conclusion has to be negative, which rules out III and IV... II is wrong because berries is the common word... I is correct because it doesnt violate any rules though "No fruits are round objects" could also be a logical conclusion, and I is just a subset of it so its true....

My take:OPTION 1
'Some berries are not fruits' is a particular negative statement.
'All berries are round' is a universal positive statement.
so the conclusion must be a particular negative statement.this rules out statements c and d.option 2 and 4 ruled out.'berries' is the distributed term in the 2 statements.no term can be distributed in the conclusion and hence sentence b is ruled out.thereby statement a i.e. only option I follows.

Well the answer is None follows..Think again and use both the statements together(mentioned in the question)
In these questions, one cannot have assumptions and commonly known facts.Try again and then I would explain.Have you maid Venn diagrams with all the possibilities?
