Well guys, i plan to do it exactly like it was done before....(see the thread in the 1st post).... Well people do want the GD to be dynamic but since chat rooms have to thought of, let us just begin by pumping in ideas...... once a topic is started, let people give their ideas on the topic and give either a for or an against approach (whatever they think is right and upto them)

But few points to consider:

This is only a friendly discussion.... So no ONE-TO-ONE please....
Remember, it is quite like ur normal GD except u can't see the person.... and can't easily barge on him/her.... So stick to the idea of giving ur point of view related to the topic.... Try to be with the flow....

Keep ur posts upto 3-4, and let others also speak.... the purpose is to gather other's view-points too before posting. So please don't clutter the thread with small posts and personal comments. Keep the GD spirit alive, sometimes silence is more rewarding!!

One advantage is that u can do quite a lot of research on a topic before posting it.... This is not something u get to do in an actual GD.... So this way we can all prepare for it.!!!!

Hmm.. Shouldve been "Was Saurav Ganguly an efficient captain" . .. Anyways ..
The job of a captain is more to lead than to be efficient .. And if the captain can inspire the team with his performance, it will show .. Now if performance of the team under Ganguly is any indicator, he did well ... But he did have some qualities missing ...

Dude, u have to substantiate ur idea with some proof as well..... I will say that Saurav Ganguly was India's one of the MOST EFFICIENT captain.... Checking out his statistics http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2004/apr/16gang.htm

His winning percentage was much ahead of Kapil dev, Gavaskar, Sachin and Azhar as captains. Even on foreign soil, he fared the best among all of his predecessors...... He is accredited as the Indian skipper whose reign lasted for 5 long years and leading victory to India in 21 tests and 76 One-dayers....the highest among all the captains so far......

I feel, this is the most amazing record or rather a feat and it has been just because of his poor batting in the recent matches and his squabble that media has highlighted him as a 'failure'. Personally I feel Ganguly has immense potential and has scored centuries and half centuries so many times..

One has to admit that after being a captain, the player isn't able to spend much time on the nets and has to take care of the team as well and other formalities...... Even master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, fared miserably during his captaincy regime and this has been the trend (pretty much) with all the players who have served as captains.

Right now all Ganguly needs to do is to get back in the form and show everyone that he is still the best captain India could ask for.......

Was Saurav Ganguly an Efficient Captain

Once Ganguly’s name comes up for discussion one fact tat is always quoted is tat he lead Team India to the max no of Test and ODI victories, but then v also need to consider the fact tat he had at his disposal arguably the Best Indian Team since the one that won the 83 world cup, so the question tat needs to be raised is why cudnt he win more matches?

And buddy “ The job of a captain is more to lead than to be efficient”. I do agree with u, but then Leadership is a role to play and not a status to be enjoyed. A performing captain is one who instills confidence in his team and commands respect from fellow mates as well as oth teams, Ricky Ponting, Inzamam nd Greame Smith are captains who led from the front by performing par excellence.

As a player Ganguly does h’ve quite a few records to his name but his batting prowess is sth that all cricketing fans know, his weakness have been well sorted out nd every international team knows where 2 bowl at him. The surprising fact is that since his early days he’s known to be suspect to Short Pitch balls, nd tat weakness Still remains, showing how much he is committed to improving himself as a player.

Its true that Ganguly played an imp part in bringing about a radical change in Team India, but he wasn’t the only one, v also need to factor in the thought that he was blessed with fresh new talents who performed at the international level viz Yuvraj, Kaif, Bhajji, Pathan, Balaji… which helped project a rejuvenated and motivated Indian team.

Offlate he has been undoing the little good work tat he had done in d past. The lack of confidence in the man is evident from the fact tat he chose to blow his trumpets regarding the coach’s allegations, only after he scored the century against Zimbabwe and not before the match commenced.

Speakin in terms of win/loss records Ganguly vil go down as one of best captains India has had, but then talking bout his performances as captain…it’s still not evident if he was efficient..

Firstly,

Filter your language..............

Secondly, as I would like to put it, he was a great leader............ one of the best ........who could actually bring the team to play for one cause................

His aggressiveness is something that was rarely seen in any other captian of India...... which is an important aspect of any game................

However, every KING has his reign............... and if he is not performing individually, he cannot be expected to be kept in the team for just his skills as a captian.............. We have given him enough chance to make a comeback................

He is one guy who has a great fan - following ................... and I feel he should retire gracefully, ratherthan begging to get a place back in the team............... and ruining his reputation....................

CHEERS

We could try and argue the point form a different aspect...

Firstly, there are two measures to gauge a leader by. One his ablity to lead a team and forster team spirit and two, his ablity to lead from the front. Considering his ability to lead a team, by itself, has two faces to it. The first face is the way this ability is projected to the outside world. This is the face that we all can see, and make out our meanings from it. What we (the outside world) can see are some of his great traits like his aggressiveness, etc. But then there is also the second face to it and that is what actually goes on between the captain and the player. Wot is actually discussed on field, in the dressing room and the other areas which is out of reach of the media and hence us. And this is not something which we can gauge. If the contents of the email sent by Chappel is to be true, then there is a serious lack of ability somewhere. So this is one point that is sort of a grey area.

The second point, his ablity to lead from the front. This has had certain ups and downs... but againg these were not sharp peaks and nadirs,.. thery were more like blunt ones, for there would be a season where he's in form or anothere season where he's totally out of form. But when this season goes on beyond a certain point, in the long run, it will by itself cause a demoralizing effect on the team...

More over wins and losses cannot just be attributed to the captain along, there are a whole range of other factors and dynamics that go into it.. it depends on all the players playing in it... a dream team india, captained by 'anyone' surely will have more than 75% success rate. So the point i am arriving at is that the efficency of a captain in fostering team spirit is more determined by the face is not visible to us. The team by itself should be comfortable by having such a person as thier captain. If that is not there then the whole point of 'efficiency' of a captain does not arise.

All said and done, Saurav Ganguly, may or may not have been 'an efficient' captain, depeding on as to whether the word 'efficiency' connotes to "success percentage" or "team dynamics".

Hey i'v finally succeeded in confusing all of u i guess!!! ;-)

And then i remembered ... i had amnesia.
