Mr. A. Janakiraman’s guest lecture on “Indian Aviation Industry Fuel Business – Opportunities and Challenges”
Date : September 3, 2008
Time : 2: 30 pm to 4 pm
Venue : Seminar Hall
Summary : Mr.Janakiraman began the evening by showing 2 amazing videos - the dangers of carelessness on duty in airports (where a small car was literally blown away into the sea by the back draft of a jet engine) and the deadly effects of negligence (where a crew member was sucked into a jet engine). He showed these videos to highlight an important point - there's more to aviation than airhostesses and glamour.
Representing the aviation fuel business of Reliance Petroleum, Mr. Janakiraman spent the remainder of the evening enlightening the group of the intricacies of the ATF business. He recounted several incidents of how Reliance had to overcome oil PSU interference and entry barriers in setting up fuel farms and refueling stations in the major airports of India and how privatization was improving airport efficiency and aircraft turnaround time. He then delved into the technicalities of refuelers and hydrants (technologies used to refuel the planes) and revealed some staggering numbers on fuel requirements of planes (approx. 600,000 litres for a single trip). He also shared some very topical information on how airport infrastructure was exploding in India, but only in selective places and he ended his talk with where he saw the Indian aviation industry a few years down the line.
All in all, it was an interesting evening where the students gained an insight into a little known but tremendously important field of business.

Re: Life @ Great Lakes Inst. of Mgmt-Chennai -
25-09-2008, 09:51 AM
Date : September 23rd, 2008 (Tuesday)
Time : 5:30 pm to 7 pm
Venue : Seminar Hall
Summary:
Lt.Gen.S.Pattibhiraman, Vice Chief Of Army Staff (Retd.) engaged the students of Great Lakes this evening in a lively discussion on India's armed forces, their role in society and what corporates in India could learn from seasoned army officers.
He spoke at length about the history of armed conflict, from the time of Christ all the way upto today's Iraq conflict, and how over the years the nature of war was changing in fundamental ways. Today's engagements mostly involve terrorist threats and guerilla warfare, but traditional wars (like the World Wars) are not predicted. Furthermore, the role of men in battle will slowly decline as robotics and automated devices like UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) take over deadly tasks. In this and other regards, he lamented India's lack of truly world class warfare equipment and the lukewarm success of indigenous defense technology.
He was quizzed extensively by the students on how soldiers adapted to normal life after active tours of duty, how officers leaving the armed forces were absorbed by companies into mainstream business and where he saw India on the geo-political stage of tomorrow. All in all, it was a fact-filled evening for the audience.
