commerce grads vs engineering grads at b-schools - 17-05-2006, 09:28 PM

hey guys , i m sorry i m not a b-school student and i ve started a thread here but the thing is that i m really confused and i ve got a lotta doubts in my mind which can be cleared by b-school students like u.i ve just given my class X exams and in a few days my result will be out and i will b taking a stream. i wanna take commerce and pursue b.com or economics hons from delhi university and then go for a mba .but what every1 keeps tellin me is tht in the b-schools when the recruitment takes place the companies always prefer students with an engineering background over the students having a commerce background . this is one thing that is holding me back from pursuing my interest i.e commerce and kind of compelling me to take science so that i can pursue engineering which i m really not interested in coz i dun wanna face such a discrimination during the recruitment at the b-school. do students from commerce backgrounds not get good placements as compared to students from engineering background? what do the companies look for in an mba student while recruitment?is it not the students performance during his/her stint at the b-school or just the background matters? i could ve posted this newhere else but decided to post it here coz who would no bout such stuff better than than the b-school students themselves?please clearmy doubts as i m highly worried coz i dun wanna pursue something in future that i m not interested in.

nik ... why are you thinking about an mba so early in ur life ??

its tru engineers have an advantage due to being good in maths .. but eco and comm grads .. counter that with there being good in accounts and finance.

in the end .. it doesnot really matter ... whether u r a commerce guy or an enginner .. more important is the fact that how gud u do in ur graduation rather than what stream u graduated in.

Your performance will be rated .. and also academically it will help you pursue an mba more comfortably .. if u have ur basics right in the first place.

So I would suggest you to take up whatever stream that intersts you ... do well in that ... and then decide whether u really wanna do an mba or not.

Take a break man.. You are just outta X class.. Trust me.. I never knew @ that stage..What I am gonna do in the next year...and You have planned your PG(no pun intended).. Hats off to your passion dude..My earnest advice wouldl be to go for what you like. Why do you want to do something uninteresting(euphemism for hell) for the next 6 years?
Go get a life and enjoy.
Cheers!

Hi niks,

Me myself from Commerce background. Placement isall about what employer wants & what u have in u. Its true that most of the guys who get admission in IIMs & other bschools are engineers. But it does not mean that they will get highest placement.

This year the highest domestic Salary was offered to A COP. He is not engineer. But he had 20 years of experince. He is IPS. So u need something in u.

So its not about stream. Its about what u have in you & what Employer wants.

I m very happy to see such a gr8 passion. Hates of to u.

But , do what ever your heart says & which is interesting to u.

& enjoy life as Puneet said.

Best Of luck for the Journey.

"Loose Tools goes to Current Assets sir. So does Patents and Copy rights" Shouted Ms. Astha of my Class when Prof. Kulkarni was teaching Accounting basics.

Creditors, Debtors, Cash Book, Ledger, Trial Balance and Balance sheets were the topic of discussion - Basics of Accounting. Its when all the engineers in our class - who have learnt Hi-Tech stuff ranging from Stress on a Beam to Compiler Design to Hi-frequency wave transmission - realised the Blunders we have committed in Life by NOT taking commerce while graduating.

For a minute, I went back to my 10+2 days. We, in 12th , learnt about Classical Mechanics. Did 500+ sums in Integration and Differentiation. We learnt what is Gravity and what satellites are. We knew how to make Phenol from Benzene. We knew that Voltage = Current * Resistance. We knew what the yellow product was when a Red Metal was treated with Hydrochloric acid. We cracked most questions of IIT-JEE too.

I was interrupted when Professor was asking a Question to us, "What is PL" ?

Having worked in IT industry for nearly 4 years, all I could think of was "Project Leader". Before I could say that (:-) , My class mate, another Engineer, shouted : "Personal Loans".

A bunch of guys, Probably the B.COM grads, Burst into Laughter. Once of them smartly raised his a** off the seat, adjusted his spectacles in a "smartie" way and said : "Sir, Its profit and Loss Account". And he looked at we engineers with a "meaningful" smile.

Finance Lecture got over. Lunch Break. Then came the Mathematics Prof. He said he'll be doing some Integration and Differentiation concepts. We, the Engineers, looked at our commerce colleagues with Contempt and affixed a Sarcastic smile on our faces which read : "Now the game starts buddy !! Count your days..."

But to our surprise and worries, the professor started his lecture with a problem :

"The demand function is given by the expression D = 2Q + 1/5Q*Q , the supply function is...Calculate Marginal Cost, Marginal Revenue...Equilibrium cost...Economic Order Quantity..blah..blah..."

Cool !! Wonderful ! Excellent ! All Greek and Latin. We knew to differentiate. But we did not know what the Marginal Revenue was all about. We Engineers were in the same dilemma as how a North Indian would feel when he is asked to differentiate between Malayalam and Tamil. Our sarcastic smiles became humble apologies. And Our Engg Honors looked much Humbler that a
B.com pass.

We Engineers requested the Prof to give us a problem in Speed-Acceleration or Current-Charge to prove our "mettle". But professor replied "You are here to learn Business. Not Science."

They, B.coms, never had the pressure of entrance exams, Didn't have to shell out money in-terms of education. But had 3 full years of full fun at Places like LSR, Delhi and St Xavier's-Mumbai, going to pub on every weekend and taking their Girlfriends to movies on every Fridays.
They did "crediTing" and "DebiTing" - which has nothing more than Simple addition and subtraction.

We, on the other hand, slogged the entire 2 years of our 10+2 days, suffered a lot of "drought" in Engg colleges where female-male ratio is lesser than Tiger-Man ratio in India and spent lots of thousands on books, fees, In-Plant trainings and Projects. We did problems that involved Numerical methods, Binomial Theorem, probability, partial Integration and so on.

Now, after all that, we look up to
B.COM grads, the same way a male-passenger waiting at Andheri station would tell himself when he sees a loosely packed first-class ladies Coach of 7.45PM Virar fast: "I should been have born in Bombay as a woman !!"
