I had given my GMAT (got 720) immediately after I graduated from engineering in May 2007. I was clear I wanted to do an MBA after 3 years of work ex and thus thought it was best to give GMAT at that stage so that I could focus on other parameters. Now I am planning to apply to universities in US for the class of 2010-2012.
I had a couple of queries based on this -
1) Would my GMAT score being a couple of years old have a negative impact on my application? I was hoping I could actually use it as an advantage for showing the clarity and focus I had from the starting of my career.
2) Is there any university you are aware of which doesnt accept a GMAT score older than 2 years?
Kindly advice.
Cheers,
Nikhil

Hi, Nikhil. No, I believe all schools accept a GMAT score up to five years old (I specifically checked with HBS, Stanford, Wharton, MIT, and INSEAD since these programs tend to have the most stringent guidelines). On the other hand, TOEFL scores usually need to be under two years old, but most likely your undergraduate degree was taught in English so you will not need to take that test! There is absolutely no downside to the GMAT score being a couple of years old. You won’t earn an admission simply based on the fact that you determined your future educational goals so far in advance, but it certainly will not be a strike against you. Best of luck in the process! Regards, Jennifer Bloom, CPRW

Thanks for the reply Jennifer! I totally agree I obviously wont get admissions solely based on the fact that I had determined my future educational goals so far in advance, although I would have loved it if getting into the top MBA educations was this easy!!
Cheers,
Nikhil

Hi Jennifer,
I would be glad if you could throw some light on scholarship/fellowship process also.Since i am interested in JD for my goals but my biggest concern is cost.Since my GMAT and acads are average ,so i do not expect merit based scholarships. Are there some need based scholarship available for internationals or do you think i would be better off applying for MBA only and duing MBA take courses in policy from university.
Please share if there are any MBA programs which have good record of awarding scholarships for JD.

Hi, Odeus. East Bay has a great location in Silicon Valley and exceptionally easy admissions, but recruiting for management positions after you graduate is not stellar. I strongly advise that you speak with current students and recent grads about how the program prepared them for their career growth trajectory. Contacting the school to find some students to speak with is a great place to start.
Good luck in the school selection process!

Hi again, Soulinluv. Accepted editor Rebecca Blustein recently wrote about finding scholarship options for both JD and MBA programs. You are correct that it is not an easy process. The one thing I will recommend to you is that you should pursue the education that will place you in a job that you like after graduation; if you pursue the wrong degree just because of scholarship money but end up in a career path that you disdain, you are not better off!

I am excited to share with you Linda Abraham's blog for today announcing wonderful news about no-cosigner loans for international MBA students!
No Co-Signor Loans for Int'l MBA Students
Now, what you've all been waiting for... GMAC announced today a new loan program for international students. To quote the press release:
"Responding to a request from the Graduate Management Admission Council® (GMAC®), a leading international bank has joined with experienced service providers in student financial aid to create a new pilot lending program for international students who attend graduate business schools around the world.
"The pilot is prepared to provide at least $500 million in loans to students in about 40 business schools in the United States and Europe, beginning with the 2009-10 academic year.
"International students, who comprise a high percentage of all U.S. graduate business school enrollment, have been especially hard-hit by the financial crisis. They are not eligible for federal loans and several major lenders have terminated the "no-cosigner" student loan programs that were widely used by this group.
"The new lending structure is designed to be school-centric and school-controlled and is not dependent on any particular bank or group of banks. Students who borrow under the program will not be required to secure co-signers. Schools involved in the program will not own loans, incur up-front costs, or have liability for individual loan defaults.
"A key participant in the project is Kevin Moehn of Moehn Management, Inc., a new company established to bring lending organizations together to facilitate student loans through a program that "delivers a sustainable and dependable structure for business schools to finance international students.'" Emphasis added.
The press release did not indicate which 40 schools will participate in the program.
So whether you did not hear good news from the programs you applied to in earlier rounds or you were putting off the application until "the economic crisis let up," this is just one more reason why it makes sense to apply this year in the third round.

Jennifer Bloom, CPRW
