Re: Phoren B-school Assistance Desk - 25-01-2007, 04:30 PM

hi guys

I recently gave my GMAT. got a horrible score 650 (28 E, 51 M).

i m a BE with 2 years work ex in IT (1.5 Infy + 0.5 Amdocs)
I am looking for a decent 1 to 1.5 yrs MBA course in "General Management".
I want to apply for 2007 only.

I know my score is not good for a top 20-25 university. But I wont mind going to a top 30-50 univ.

You guys here might have done a bit study on universities....

please suggest some universities i can look for...

i have thought of trying for ESADE and RSM.. please suggest some similar universities.

I want to apply in atleast 8-10 universities.

Thanks a lot to all of u. This thread has been quite useful for me.

Sam,

INSEAD is a very competitive school and R3 is more competitive than R1 and R2. Your experience is low, and you say your extra curriculars are nil and your international experience is 6 months. Your GMAT is just above average and pretty much on par when it comes to the highly competitive Indian/IT applicant pool. (For e.g. one of the very young INSEAD admits this year in R1 owns a company)

Your essays and overall profile must show a solid track record of achievements to get in. Don't even think about switching companies because "you will be in an MNC" - this MNC signature does not have much value in top schools like INSEAD because a lot of applicants are from big corporations. Your personal story, achievements and profile have greater weight. Like another poster said, switching companies now will hurt your recommendations. Bottomline - don't do it.

My armchair advice to you is to wait an year, make sure your have a strong story to tell in your essays, and apply for R1 of Sep 2008 or Jan 2009 batch. Remember INSEAD is hard on re-applicants, so you have only one real chance and don't mess it up.

Apart from INSEAD, IMD is a top school - but they rarely admit students with few years of experience. SDA bocconi has a 14 month program - the disadvantage with European schools is that they want more work experience. If you don't have that, you need to be able to show something extraordinary in your profile.

Good luck,

Re: Phoren B-school Assistance Desk - 30-01-2007, 06:41 PM

well guys,
i have a very fundamental question.

all these years it was only CAT that i had in my mind,
but then now that i have some work ex. i am thinking of writing GMAT.
but the problem is that i have no clue about the exam, the best colleges, ideal score(something like 99+ is needed for iim's).

if anybody can provide me links out here that will clarify these doubts or better, if someone can clarify these for me i'd be glad

regards,
bharath

Bharath,

Could you please search around a little. Its too broad a question to answer. Please visit the GMAT sections and I am sure you'll find all your answers.

Info on USC - 01-02-2007, 12:58 AM

How good is USC and their IMBA Program? They have something like European Track Which is supposed be a joint degree with some school in Vienna. Is it worth joining it?

On your question -
Google around what school in Vienna ?

What are your requirements ? Why do you want your MBA ? uless you share that, I am sure it will be hard for most forum member to give you and objective opinion on an IMBA.

Also, Most IMBA's have a foriegn language requirement. You need to know one more language apart from english. Do not know if that is the case with USC.

Do you want to work in Italy / Europe post MBA ? If not, then why IMBA ?
The purpose of an IMBA - broadly is to allow students work / learn in a country /region where they desire to seek post-MBA employment. The other benefit of an IMBA is if you are interested in International Business ? Is that what you are looking for ?

Which B-School for Venture Capital ? - 01-02-2007, 01:13 PM

Let me disclaim that i am an absolute newbie in the b-school arena. What i do know is what i want to do and what i seek from this school is how do it do it.

I want to get into Venture Capital (saying it shakes me to the bone )...Its not about the money or anything else, but the sheer fun and passion of making a new business work. "Give me a business and I will tell you what can change it or whether its worth putting any dough in it"..

Okay having blabbered that out, I do NOT know, what skills i need , Being in IT/Sales can i get into it ? and other things that sound similar to ones i just mentioned...
So,

a. If any B-school is the best place to go for it ? (leave Stanford and HBS)
b. What is the career path for becoming a VC? Do i need to have a background in Finance, Operations ...?

All replies will be greeted with a thump in the air accompanied with loud awkard noise in middle of the office...

Re: Phoren B-school Assistance Desk - 01-02-2007, 02:14 PM

Hi,

I have been waitlisted at Tepper. Adcomm had told me to send them any supplement material related to any updates in my profile. But as I am in my family biz currently, there is not much change to talk about.

What do you think can get me off the waitlist? I am really interested in Tepper as i think the program is inline with my future goals. Do you think a support letter from a current student/alum of tepper wud help? Even if he dosent know me personally?

My Gmat is 710 and i dont think i have enuf time to prepare again and improve on it. I had sent them 3 recos with the application so sending another one wudnt be a great idea i believe.

I seek help from all the PG gurus! Please guide me..

TIA
