Start of GMAT Prep for 3rd year Engg. Student - 03-09-2009, 10:06 PM

Greeting everyone!
Firstly, I'm very new here, so accept my apologies if I'm posting in the wrong section or something.

Well, I'll cut right through the chase - I'm a third year (5th semester) engineering student at NSIT, New Delhi. I started some light study for the CAT about a month ago, and I found that it's not really my calling. So finally, having zeroed in on going out of the country for my MBA, I need advice on what I should do with my time right now. Is it really necessary to have some work ex to apply to college? Or can I give the GMAT in my last year of college and get through an MBA college abroad, provided I get a good score in my test?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sorry again if this is the wrong place to post. I tried looking up for similar thread, but couldn't find any.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi,

I think its quite early to prepare for GMAT, as most of the top ranked mba colleges require good work experience at the time of application with few exceptions. And it also depends on the type of colleges u are targetting. If you are targetting college not that high ranked than you may stand a chance, but i wont advise that as mba educations is quite costly.

Whatever you do, take a decision after proper research. Hope this was helpful.

Thank you for your reply - what you're saying makes a lot of sense. What would you recommend I do? Would work experience with NGO's help in getting admission?

Thanks...

I think it would be better to start from "why do you want to do mba?" and than looking for ways to achieve that. I am sure working with an NGO will help improving your application, but if you are doing it just for mba, it will definately show up. And you have the time advantage, i would advise you work for sometime after grad, which will help u in deciding whether you want to mba and also when is the right time.

Its just my opinion and may not be the best way. I would advice you get in touch with others too. :-)

If you are in your 3rd year, consider Harvard Business School's ' 2+2 program. Might just be the thing for you.

Also, since you have the time, get hold of Richard Montauk--How to get into the Top MBA programs. Will be extremely useful.

Locked.
