Hi,
I just gave my gmat, got a miserable score of 650:
V 32
Q 48.
(One word of advice is to be through with OG questions - verbal since I got lots of similar and same ones)
My profile is:
Work Exp : Will complete 4 yrs in IT (3 years as Tester, Test Designer in Infy) and 1 Yr as Business Analyst.
Acads: 2.5 -3 gpa (BE - IT),
extra curriculars: few business plans and start ups proposed.
I would be grateful if you can evaluate my profile and let me know of my chances in US B Schools.
Thanks and Regards,
Deepak

Your chance depends more on which US B Schools you are applying. Top 15 ? 16 to 30 ? or some no-name B schools ?
You have typical Indian profile. Thats the bigger problem than your average GMAT. Quote:

Sorry buddy.....Unfortunately, Green Lantern is damn correct....At this score, your profile really stands out. It all depends on the schools you apply to. But just a word of caution, if you're aiming at the ivy league, I suggest you re-take your GMAT soon and get a 730+ score so as to partially eclipse the typical indian IT experience. I have to be honest with you....IT experience, especially Indian IT experience is now being increasingly looked down upon. Even our own ISB has admitted that they do not really want lot of IT presence in their classes. In fact the very tag of Infy or TCS makes the adcomm frown!! There's an article in PG about the ISB adcomm speaking of IT inclination in the batch. I took my GMAT last month and scored a decent 680 and AWA 5.5. I'm a 2007 engineering passout but at the moment, I am the crossroads, therefore I seem to have the luxury choosing a line of work according to my wish. I'm really pressing hard to net a non-IT job, preferably in the managerial line. I'm definitely not a very experienced person to advice you on this, but this is solely based on my research about admissions in the previous weeks. Don't take my word for this. I suggest you do your own research on the matter. Please also note that, GMAT is the easiest step in applying for B-Schools. GMAT score does matter but its not the only thing. Even with this score and a very strong essay that proves your story and drives your point home can get you a very good B-School.
All the very best!! Keep faith!! | | | | | | | |

Thanks a ton, Ashwin and Green Lantern, really appreaciate your replies.
Yes I know I fall into the typical, indial male category, but would'nt my extra curricular be of some help in differentiating me?
But retaking the gmat I dont think is very wise, considering the 2 nd round of deadlines are very near.
BTW i hope to get admitted into top 20 - 30 schools atleast (GIT, Txs - A & M, USC, etc) is there any realistic chance?
Thanks and Regards,
Deepak. | | | | | | | |

Thing is the extra circulars, although important would not do much to shadow your drawbacks.....If you intend to apply this year, go ahead do them....May you get selected in some good place....If you don't, you obviously have a chance to improve upon GMAT score and host of other areas where u feel u might lag as of now. As far as your question regarding your chances at 20-30 top univs are concerned, I personally feel you might make it into the top 20 list itself. I suggest you apply to 1-2 top 10 univs too..Thats the general rule- you apply to levels above and also below your target category...This gives you a good safety barrier to fall back on....Whatever you do, get ur essays and LoRs correct and firm....I guess thats all for now....All the best....Go ahead and do whatever you can....
And if possible, tailor your essays to project your extracirr. activities. Your extracirr has basically evolved in and around business....this is a plus point.....make use of it....

But I think INSEAD, IMD and many other euro MBA schools prefer guys with production and manufacturing background among the regular favorites like finance managers and those in the managerial line. Yes, as hitandtrial pointed out, essays can make all the difference.

Oh.....640.....If you have the time, I strongly urge you to retake GMAT....of course, provided if you have the time for it....My score is 680 Q49, V34.....But I have time to start before applying....Even I plan to retake it after sometime....But as I said earlier, GMAT is perhaps the easiest step in applying....So do your research and essays well if you cannot retake your GMAT. GMAT is the single powerful parameter you can always improve upon....If you have a 720-730 score, you'll have very good chances of making it....All the best....I suggest you go to Princeton Review Verbal coaching...thats what even I plan on attending..... | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to ashwinkgopal For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
