Re: Gmat.... - 26-03-2004, 12:50 AM

I took gmat last yr and got a meagre 700 (taking into account my run of the mill IT exp. and my Indian origins
Apped to 3 schools in US...got thru 2 .....but as smbd said above..coz of the ROI factor and coz of personal reasons am planning to do my mba frm India...(may b i ll do my second mba frm abroad ....)
did a lot of research on foreign mba and wud like to share my exp. as well as some gud practice stuff...
Also dint app to ISB..coz I believe if one is ready to shell out close to 16 lacs..one shud do his mba frm abroad..preferably US as thjis makes a lotta sense..thts my personal opinion...nd comments r welcome...

P.S. Keep watching this space for more!!

Re: Gmat.... - 26-03-2004, 07:04 PM

phew, finally we do have a section for GMAT @PG

anybody around here who has dates in near future. : Me in about 3 weeks time. So, am into it right now. Will keep updating this thread with useful resources & links. Although a simple search will throw up hundreds of resources, there are a few worth mentioning .. gmatclub.com obviously, testmagic.com, gmattutor.com & gmattutor yahoogroup. But more doesn't always help. It might confuse one on the contrary.

there are a couple of 99%ilers on board. request them to put up their test strategies & test day experience for benefit of others..

lets restrict our disc to these rather than posting about individual sectional nitty gritties... wat say aspirants..

& finally gmat is just the very start of the whole apping process .. lets share the agonies & jubilations

-amit

Hi,

I've apped to Harvard, Stanford and Wharton, round 3 at all, so results only in May. If you've finally stopped laughing and picked yourself up off the floor, I agree that they were very optimistic apps .

Mansur

Hi Mansur,

this is getting interesting ...
only H/S/W .. nuthing else.. :-O
now your gmat scores indicate that you must have selected those based on some logic... care to reveal that

Hi Amit,

Personally, I found that the GMAT was a test of stamina more than anything else . Close to 4 1/2 hours, whew...

I suggest you take lots of full length practice tests, and when you do, write the AWA essays as well. These won't be scored of course, but you'll get a sense of how sapping the GMAT can be. And don't rush through your practice tests. The thing is that irrespective of how easy the problem is on the real test, you would tend to double and triple check it, so it's unlikely that you'll finish it with tons of time to spare. So, try to replicate this in practice, treat all of them like the real thing.

And most importantly, just relax. If things are getting tougher, it only shows that you're rocking the test, so keep your cool throughout and have fun .

Regards,
Mansur

Sure . Essentially, I have strong entrepreneurship goals, and the decisions for H/S were based on their strength in this area. W was for the rather more boring reason that it's entrepreneurship focus was decent, and it's kind of Indian friendly .

Mansur

Re: Gmat.... - 26-03-2004, 11:22 PM

hi PG

I apped at the following places:
Smeal (Penn State) Got thru..with 35% schol..
W.P.Carey (ASU) -- Got thru..awaitng schol decision..
Dupree (Gatech) --Ding Ding-- :(

Now,having gone thru the whole process, I wud never advise nebd to go for such conservative apps.In my case cud hv easily apped to schools in the top (am not talking abt H/W/S here...still dont feel i hv the sufficient exp/i'ntl exp./money/gmat score to go fr these stellar schools) but i paid the price of being ignorant.
And also,if u dont put ur heart into smth,u r never gonna get that...as I have realised that this gets reflected thru ur essays...
since i was always interested in doing mba from India fr some personal as well as financial reasons..so I had gone thru the whole process just coz I didnt want to repent that I didnt even give it a try...and since the scores r valid fr 5 yrs..i can always go fr my 2nd mba frm abroad when i ll b having the sufficient moolah...

for guys prepping fr GMAT..
I believe that the first step that goes into ur planning fr a international mba is that u shud start early...And this can make or break ur chances...believe me...
In my case, coz i was so involved with my CAT prep nd office that i missed the fin aid deadlines of few gud schools...(though deadlines go as far as April but its the fin aid deadlines that matter to most indian candidates...)

Starting early can also help u research comprehensively and get down to a prospective list of schools that will accomodate ur goals and ur kinda profile.Dont just app for a b school coz u think its up thr in the rankings or ur relative has done his mba frm thr.Decide on the basis of ur strengths nd weaknesses...goals nd aspirations..Do a SWOT analysis basically..

Next thing in line is getting not just gud but an excellent score...mind u ..u might get chucked out at some places just bcoz of this single statistics of urs...so when u put a couple of mths fr the prep...start aiming fr 800 frm the beginning.,..

Am getting sleepy now..so thst it fr now,,wud definitely help ppl who r prepping fr their gmat..
And PG dear...how can I upload the GMAT stuff I had painstakingly collected fr my prep..???i Hv lots of it..if its not possible to upload it..i Can post links nd e-groups that hv such stuff and can b really useful...

bye
Cooldexter..
