Hello

I'm a newbie here. I'm currently doing my BE from Delhi College of Engineering, 2nd year. I'm a pretty average student with an overall percentage not above 60. I'm planning to (i know it's too soon but it's better to be prepared, right?) pursue MBA abroad. After surfing various websites of b-schools, I've seen that the minimum percentage required is around 3GPA = 80% (somewhat). Is this rule flexible? Coz even after my 4th year frankly I really don't think my percentage would cross the 65 border. Do all above average b-schools abroad have this strict rule of a minimum percentage or bending of rules is allowed depending upon the work experience, co curricular activities etc? I'd be really thankful for your help/advise/suggestions :)

With reference to the news of Assurgent Technology Solutions duping its employees and trainees that came up in all the leading newspapers of Kolkata (The Telegraph, Times of India, Statesman) on 6th June 2009, we the final year students of P.C.Chandra School of Business (PCCSB) are writing this letter to bring to light the criminal nexus between Assurgent Technology Solutions & Mr. Avishek Auddy, Director, PCCSB.

IT firm Assurgent Technology Solutions recruited 22 MBA students of 2007-09 batch on 30th April, 2009. Appointment Letter of Assurgent Technology Solutions containing names of 22 students of PCCSB is attached with this mail. Students were asked to pay Rs 50, 000/- as security deposit at the time of joining. In return Assurgent would pay Rs 6000/- per month!

We have come to know from authentic sources that Mr. Auddy has taken Rs 5000/- per student from Mr. Srijon Chatterjee, senior official of Assurgent for the placements. Now Mr. Auddy is pressuring students to join the fraudulent IT firm Assurgent Technology Solutions, after paying Rs 50, 000/- as security deposit to Mr. Srijon Chatterjee.

Kindly investigate the matter from your end and do the needful to stop further occurrence of any unfair act harming the future of students of Punjab Technical University.

Yours truly,

Ankita Chatterjee
(2nd yr MBA student, PCCSB, PTU )

Hi,

I am Mukesh currently working with one of the biggest investment bank's IT division as software engineer. Also I have offer from another one of the best bank's IT division in Singapore. I am not in love either with coding or management. I can go for any one whichever gives more growth opportunities(pays, role). Though I am gold medalist from NIT in engineering but still i think if I have IIM degree I will grow faster. I am confused should I go for MBA or should accept Singapore's offer. Actually I could go onsite from s/w company for long term(3-4 years), in that case would it be better than IIM degree????? in other words working in India with IIM degree or working onsite with good money .......which is better........frankly saying I will go only for money.

Placement as USP: Now that the admission season is almost over, the moot point in higher education circle will automatically shift towards campus placements. Ironically the admission season also is mostly about selling the seats with placement statistics. Tall claims about the top companies that has visited, 100% placement track record, maximum and average packages achieved in placement will all do a virulent round making people believe that a mere enrollment is what is necessary for a prosperous career. Blatant assurances given in this regard nowadays convince anyone to beg, borrow or steel your way for gaining entry into higher education. Certain realities dawned on many only now as a side effect of global recession last year and therefore the placement season this year is opening with all round mixed feelings. Questions ranging from as to what is going to be the effect of recession on overall job opportunities to whether the choice of campus made is going to gain one the aspired chance are harping the minds of many. More than the placement and economic statistics, it is necessary to understand the process of campus placement for one to derive benefit from the opportunities that are made available from the process.

It is only in the last two decades that campus placement has played a significant role in the recruitment and selection process. But almost all of those who have gained an opportunity from their campuses did not had an immediate appreciation of the process that got them their opportunity. The policies and practices adopted by both the campus placement managers of the placement cells and the campus team of the employers left many a things to be desired in the minds of the students. A student seeking an answer as to why he is not short listed (while the other not so deserving has been short listed!) will not get any satisfactory answer and so will end up complaining about nepotism. Also the realities witnessed in the process will baffle any analyst forcing him to draw congruence to several maladies. For example a student admitted for his performance in the tests like CAT (candidates Aptitude Test) will perform miserably in a rudimentary level aptitude test administered by an employer. In another case a top ranker in the college will opt out himself / herself from an opportunity that is the best so far to have come in the history of that campus. As a result an employer may find better candidates from a lowly rated campus than a highly rated one damaging the very basis of their campus selection scheme. Such abnormalities got swept under the carpet for long but, the realities of the recessionary trend have now brought them to the forefront. Therefore, the uncertainty is more because of everyone contemplating for a change of strategy or policy or scheme as a correction or as an alternative to campus placement. In reality the placement should and will happen by every year, either through Campus or other.

Myths busted: All the parties in the campus placements have learned to live on certain myths. The campus placement team members of the employers believe and demand that the faculty member of the campus to co-operate with them to ensure the best pick for them during the campus selection. The students believe that their campus manager and faculties will facilitate for a selection with their choicest employer. The campus manager believes that they will satisfy all the students and the entire employer visiting their campus tactically by enforcing certain policies. Though these things can be deduced easily as myths by simple common sense reasoning, the people also do not have any other option other than believing it. Also the fact that effective selection is ensured by campus placements add fire to these pseudo beliefs.

Why should an employer visit a campus when he or she could have summoned all the talents across the country for a “Walk-in” selection at his premise? Why should a campus manager invite this employer while there are (a) thousand other companies that student prefer to be invited ahead of this employer? Or (b) a hundred other companies that have expressed their preference for such an early slot during the placement season? How a student decides on their choices of campuses in the circumstances a top ranked student choosing a top rated campus is not a guarantee in any way for a top quality placement opportunity. The institutions do a very hard selling of seats today and admission materializes only if the aspirants are assured for a choicest placement. Therefore the life continues with the pseudo belief and none bothered about its veracity till recession. But when the recession has made people to look for a basis to their beliefs, they are without an answer for it till date.

Quality in campus: Campus placement is an off-shoot of quality movement (many also say it as a mere a passing hype!) that had its crescendo in India during the nineties. Before, the employer widely believed in getting the best of the resources for all their requirements. Thus they preferred advertising for the positions widely through print and other media for giving equitable opportunity across all the campuses in the country. Huge expenditure was involved in such pompous selection that apart also consumed considerable amount of executive's time. When the quality movement demanded the employer (the HR or Human Resource professionals of the employer's firm) to make ‘job definitions’ and ‘job specification’ for all the positions, only then they realized that almost all the requirements are better catered to by the campus at their next door. The sudden surge in the demand for IT professionals accelerated the migration to the process of campus placement. This process brought down the cost involved, the executive time involved etc.., in the selection process enormously and also it got proved and thus approved by quality managers for its effectiveness. Now a day, only the government and public enterprises go for pan India fresher selection through media advertisements. Apart, the educational institutions advertise for their positions but not necessarily for all India selection. The dilemma to them is that they cannot patronize another campus then their own and so they are not making campus visits. Their regulators like UGC and AICTE are also not allowing them for it. As a matter of fact, the faculty members seeing their students taking plum positions easily at campus toil a lot for their own placement and thus seldom they become a whiz in placements or for counseling for placements.

Hunter and the hunted: As the sun rises in the jungle every day, both the lion and the deer wakes up to run. The deer, the hunted, graze in the pasture around for living has to run faster than the lion to save its life. The lion, the hunter, has to run faster than the slowest deer for living and it doesn't have any threat apparent for its life. Placement in colleges is not about teaching deer to hunt. It is for the students to decide on their game plan for living their life in the corporate jungle. But campuses that breed lions are different from those pastures for deer herds. Also a campus can have all of lion, deer, fox, elephant and the entire wilderness in it as well. Both the employer and the students therefore do a lot of homework nowadays to choose their campus. Not all campus opportunities are the same and nothing could be qualified as 'good' or 'bad' just with package and profile information. A student, having chosen his campus, has to check his or her fitments at every campus opportunity. Yes, one has to run as fast as it is possible for securing an opportunity as this is corporate jungle game.

An emerging alternative to campus placement is on-line recruitment. This channel has opened plenty of scope for many intermediaries who can execute functions as agencies for the outsourced recruitment and selection process. They interface both with campus managers and the employers to bridge the gap effectively. But, their effectiveness very much depends on their prudence in handling campus affairs. A position hoarded in a company web site will require right job seekers hitting at it and that will happen only when it is figuring in campus lobby. Therefore, the openings have to reach the campuses and also the campuses have to be constantly fishing for the openings even in on-line recruitment channels. Effectively on-line recruitment is only an extension to campus placement today. Therefore, the campus placement still do not have effective alternative and therefore the fresher has to make their hay only at their shining campuses.

Consult and carry-on: Even in these recessive periods, opportunities will predominantly come only through the campuses. A student going dry from his or her campus will find it doubly difficult in other channels in the open job market that predominantly service only those with good experience. Better strategy is to take the first opportunity coming into the campus and then to check for better and best opportunities in the open market. The opportunity that one aspire cannot come to the campus this season even if it has been assured by a copy of memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the time of admission. Only a placement consultant can assure their client of a satisfactory placement for a fee and campus managers cannot assume this responsibility. Such consultants prefer only those with an experience as their clients and the chances are that one may be their client just with any campus offer. Campus managers of the placement cell can endeavor to net work their students with right consultants for facilitating better fitments that is otherwise going to take time in recession. Apart, a student desperate for any job will find opportunities coming their way at the campuses. One has to be with right attitude to avail it and overall the collective attitude at the Campus will decide the effectiveness. But what India Inc will require now is for more good students to be enterprising now to create sustainable opportunities for future generations.
