get complete command over barron's wordslist -
14-04-2005, 02:23 PM
i had posted this reply in one of the threads by cat_queen earlier .i m posting this again for the benefit and general information of all cat aspirants.
well friends let me first tellu how this thing works. v r a group of abt 10 ppl and v regularly meet up at public places or ne other convenient place possible.
the thing is that most of us in the group have only moderate reading habbits or none in the worst cases(ppl like me  ). so if v try to build up our vocabulary by readin, it wud take us ages to do tat way bcoz even if v read 20 pages per day v come across hardly 5-10 new words . here comes in our IIFTian friend . wat he does is tat he gives us readin material thru which v come to learn new words nd their usage. but the novelty of this method is that the readin material is wriiten by him . in other words , using words frm the barron's list he weaves up a story or an essay or nethin that makes up for an interesting readin and the gud thing is tat this process is abt 10 times faster than normal readin. a 250 word write up of his has abt 15 new words along with their synonyms so in abt 1 hr session v not only learn abt 25 new words but also their contextual usage which is very imp for rc also. it has worked wonders for all of us. if u want ne more clarification on this ,u all r welcome.
cheers.

my advice wud be to just use flashcards to note down the diffuclt words as u comb hrough them aphabetically....on eacxh flashcard, put the word down, its denfinition, different connotations if any that it has and lastly a sentence that illustrates its most common usage.....thats all u need..keep going thorugh the flashcards when u get time and make a smaller pile from there of words that giveu more toruble than usual...repeat the same process for every smaller subset that u make from there....
this simple method is the most effective way of improving ur vocab in the short-term....using this method, i maanged ot mug up and retain all 3500 words or so from barron;s GRE list and i remeber them till today becasue of the mnemonics t hat I used on the really difficult ones...

Stick to the old fashioned way. -

with so much fuss around, i wonder if it is worth so much of effort.in any case many word lists abound which are of varying degree of difficulty.there are certain oxford dictionary-cum-encyclopaedias which are very good.one such is a book called "better word power".in its later portion it has a collection of difficult words which is too god and rare if i may say so.
with some time in our hands,i think the simplest and best way is to maintain your own copies or diaries of diffucult words(mainly collected from the word lists),reading things written in your own handwriting is important.regarding the flash card technique, the point is just how many words can u put up on them in any case?not much.they are o.k. for a few words which u r just unable 2 remember.nothing more than that.

flash cards .... -
21-04-2005, 11:31 AM
hi friends...
i think that the best method to rmbr the wordlist to do it by the flash cards method ...
also make sure that u know the meaning properly..use the dictionary along with it....
and man, here are no short cuts....start using them in ur letters,mails,etc....
harder u try and better u get...
best of luck....
chao....
There can be many excuses for failing in CAT...but there is only one reason .....
I WASN'T LUCKY

my take on the gre verbal part: its not necessary to 'mug up' the word lists. i dont think i did even one. its also not possible to try and work the words into our daily conversations. the listener would have to know the words too . its more important that u get familiar with each word and know the different contexts in which it can be used. the best thing is to go on reading the lists. over a period of time, u get familiar with the words, and even if u r not too sure about the meaning, it certainly wont scare u in the exam, and thats important! this method will also help in narrowing down ur options. u will know when a a particular word 'sounds correct'. one can try reading the classics, books by eliot, austen, dickens, thackeray.... words that sound strange to us were used in everyday conversations in those days. its the best way to learn how the shades of meanings of every word can differ. i learnt more from those books than from barrons! i guess one could make a list of difficult words to go thru on the move ( i read for the gre in the bus and during college lectures , never at home! ). but not more than a couple of pages, else it beats the purpose!

im new to this thread and hopefully with some new ideas too i think only better way to learn wordlist is to recognize it first so u should have a wide reading habits further u should write down the thesaurus or synonyms of a particular word u have come across and the synonyms should be those words which enrich ur word power further
for example take PERTURB its definition is unsettle or disturb and synonyms adjy, agitate, bewilder, bother, bug, confound, confuse, disarrange, discombobulate, discompose, disconcert, discountenance, flurry, fluster, get to, make waves, muddle, needle, perplex, pester, ruffle, stir up, vex.
hence in this way u can learn and recognize words easily no flash cards no rote just logic and simplicity . please do reply bout my idea
