for example take PERTURB its definition is unsettle or disturb and synonyms adjy, agitate, bewilder, bother, bug, confound, confuse, disarrange, discombobulate, discompose, disconcert, discountenance, flurry, fluster, get to, make waves, muddle, needle, perplex, pester, ruffle, stir up, vex.

hence in this way u can learn and recognize words easily no flash cards no rote just logic and simplicity . please do reply bout my idea

Well, I tried this idea already once... this is a misleading idea... coz, CAT concentrates on nuances and usages rather than the broader meaning... even though one gets so many words from a thesaurus they have different nuances....

I dont think mugging up is the best option. Familiarity is the key. If a word "sounds" familiar and looking at options u can choose what is correct. Obviously 4 closer meanings deeper shades of similar words have to be known. Mags like Frontline, Barrons GRE and anything up there to read under the sun (enabler to our goal?!) have to be read & new words to be imbibed. Thats the road to .........

Some people just accept the world as it is
But I'm not willing to lay down and die
Because I'm an innocent man.

i agree with joy . flash cards, sentence formation , mugging up , "soundness" of words, these can only help to a certain extent . for somebody who cant mug 3500 words nd doesnt hv the time left to form sentences , i think the method suggested by ventroloquist's iift friend is suitable option. remember fms, iift, xlri test vocab nd the minute nuances of their meanings also. u can confirm this with ne student of the above b schools.

Hi all ,

It was really nice to see so amny suggestions for improving the vocabulary.
But I wud like to ask a question - is it really worthwhile to put painstaking efforts in improving vocabulry. I mean - how much weightage does vocabs carry in CAT.
And any one with decent enough reading habits can answer 60-75 % vocabs related question.
Since vocabs cannot be solver just by knowing the meanings. there are other techniques like elimination, usage etc.
Still can anyone just give me a good reason to put effort in building vocabs - so that I may prepare it for this CAT.

Hi guys,

Well i m also on the same boat...trying to have a command on the barron's wordlist.right now i m doin it in a pretty simple manner and my methodology is to go thru any one list 2-3 times and try to get accostomed with the words.i m not putting lots of effort to mug up all the words..just trying to get familiarized with them.
i m trying to put some time daily for this exercise..
hope it works...
what do u guys say??

ciao

Chain story to enhance vocab-1 - 27-04-2005, 04:38 PM

Hey guys,

I have an idea!! Lets start a Complete-the-story thread, where each member would be obliged to use at least 2 uncommon words in their contribution to the story.

Let me start with the following:

While the populace was sleeping in the village, the animals in the thick forests of Sundarban were warming up for their daily hunt. Mowgli, woke up with a yawn. He cleared the gossamer that spiders had spun around him. He checked his forearm lacerated by his own "panja" boomerang. Suddenly, he heard....

Gossamer: Cobweb
Lacerate: to cut or gash the skin so that the wound is deep with irregular edges

A few rules to abide by(to make it easier)
1. Please do put the addendum number in the title of the post. Makes it easier for others to follow
2. Please make sure to add the words and their meanings
3. If someone has to make a correction about the usage of the word, please mark it in the title as Correction <post number>
4. Rules are to be broken but lets make it easy for the group to follow.
